I am thrilled beyond words to start this journey with you today. My intentions were to greet you with a video welcome but technology did not cooperate with me. Computers: I love and I hate them. Anyway, Lord willing I will be posting a vlog (video blog for Open Blog weekend tomorrow) For those of you who are new to Experiencing the Real Meaning of Free, I take the weekend off from teaching and let you all take over.
I hope each of you has read the information about our journal under Read Thru the Word. The questions that we will be answering each day are posted there. I suggest you print them out and tape them in the inside cover of your notebook, that is what I am going to do. Enough tidbits.
Last year I read a book by Louie Giglio, who now is my favorite author other than God and perhaps Beth Moore. The book is i am not but i know I AM. It is a life-changing book-well, it changed mine. Anyway, he pointed out the scripture I used as our key verse. A new day starts at night (when it is dark). He quotes another author saying, "We go to bed and God goes to work." I love that! When we wake up it is time for us to take our place in His story. I don't want to miss my appointments.

God had Adam name the animals, male and female, showing him everyone had a mate but him. God gently pointed out Adam's need. The Holy Spirit does the exact same thing with us.

I never noticed the warning of the trees was given to Adam before Eve was created. Hmmm?

Even after I sin God still wants to have fellowship with me. God knew Adam and Eve had sinned yet called, "Where are you?" I love that about God.

I've only made it through Gen. 1-2:4a, this morning at 12:45. But something came back to my that I had thought about a week or 2 ago.
It's found in Gen. 2:2&3...
"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. (3) And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done."
My thought is this: What has happened to our day of rest? Truly, are we taking a day of rest each week, or are we constinantly on the go as much as the rest of the world? While I understand Sundays are generally meant for fellowship and worship to our King, we should also be taking the time out to rest and relax. Sometimes my husband and I find ourselves so busy even in between Sunday services, that we wonder when will we ever get our next Sunday afternoon nap? If I have ever learned one thing growing up it's that naps are not fun when you are a child, but oh if I could just have one a week...the world of good it will do for my body, mind, & spirit. :o) It says here that God rested and made that day holy. Shall we follow in His steps, and take a break from our work? Shall we keep this day holy? God already understood the need for rest when He created the everything. If we don't take time out to rest, eventually we will run out of steam. Something to consider.

Amen on the rest. Our body and spirit definitely need it.
1. Something familiar: We are all familiar with the account of creation because most of the time when we resolve to read thru the bible, we have no problem getting thru Genesis (it's in Numbers that we fall off). I still get holy goosebumps at the phrase "Then God said...And that is what happened." It made me think about the power of God's Word. To some extent our words have power, too. Too often though, words trip us up. Look at Eve. Her first mistake was in exchanging words with the serpent. It gave the devil a foothold. She also added to God's word. In Gen 2:17 God told Adam not to eat the fruit. She added "or even touch it' in Gen 3:4. We have to be careful not to distort God's word.
2. Something new: Gen 3:16b made me do a double take. This translation says "And you will desire to control your husband..." Eve was originally created to be Adam's help mate. But after sin entered the world, well, that explains the source of conflict in most marriages. Would it be too early to admit I struggle with this? Now I know where it came from...
3. Application: I pray that God will put a guard ovver my mouth. May I obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit when He says "do not say anything" instead of running with that I think I know. That I pray for the right words to say esp in my marriage.
An aside: I finally had the answer re tears in heaven. It came from the new year's eve service. My pastor says it's because we will be overwhelmed at the glory of the place that Jesus promised to prepare for us in John 14:1.

When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land.
Springs of Living Water... I search the NIV and springs of water are referenced 34 times. They bring life, refreshment, and sustenance. They are often in God's promises to us as a reflection of His provision and His grace poured out for us. How marvelous that they were there at the beginning of time sustaining life in this new creation!

I am always amazed how you can read God's word over and over and always find new wisdom He wants to share.
I saw the serpent - the devil differently today. Verse 1: 26 referring to human's God created "They will reign over...small animals that scurry along the ground". Verse 3:1 _"The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made." Verse 3:15 "He(human) will strike your head and you(serpent) will strike his heel." The wisdom I found today is that God has allowed satan to be among us, to temp us - strike at our heel, but God in His generous way has given us dominion over these temptations. He desires us to rely on Him and He will not allow satan to overcome us as we will strike satan's head by our faith in our saviour.
Nugget I already knew but still marvel in it's truth and feel it worthy of sharing: verse 1:2 - "and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." verse 1:26 "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us." verse 3:22 "Then the Lord God look, the human beings have become like us." God used the plural here - us/our.
Question: I believe God pointed out the river with four distinct branches for a reason. Does anyone have further insight on the meaning behind the four branches: The Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates?

The thought of the Spirit (Gen 1:2a) hovering gives a new meaning of when I hover over a situation. I need to let the Spirit hover over my life more because the Holy Spirit was doing it 1st, and can do it better then me. I need to let go & let God do the hovering.

Good morning to everyone. I am looking forward to hearing from those who have joined us again and
others who are coming on board.
I have always wondered why the word "submission" gave me that cold chill up
the back of my neck when it came to my marriage. That answer came to me this
morning in Gen. 3:16. God clearly answered this when Eve gave Adam the forbidden
fruit. Adam did taken it and then "blamed Eve", did you catch that. But notice what
God said a bit further in vs. 16 as her punishment. "And you will desire to control
your husband but her will rule over you."
I realized that "that desire to control" didn't always have to be direct.
Sometimes I would use things, time, attention or manipulate to "control."
Although I might say "he had the final word on the subject, did he really?"
This was a great reflection for me having recently been divorced. Even if it
was a bit too late, God is using this to teach me.

Good Morning All~ So excited to greet all of you old and new friends, on this first day of the New Year! Happy New Year, and what a happy year it will be, studying God's Word together!
Wendy, I love this new style that God has planned for us! We are going to know our Father so much more. I so enjoyed reading the beginning of Genesis today! And, you are so right, that every time we read it new things are revealed to us. Each of you, already have given me much to ponder over.
#1 When reading Genesis 3:15, today, I saw this as being God's first promise to man. I missed that altogether in the many times I've read Genesis! We have this promise to hold on to, Christ is triumphant over Satan!
#2 After reading through Revelation, I became more clear as to the different characteristics of the enemy. In a couple of verses (Revelation) they even named the 4 names of the enemy, (dragon, serpent, devil, satan). In today's reading he is introduced as one that "deceives." I see him as being more powerful and constantly at work trying to keep our attention away from God. When I looked up the word deceive, it even became clearer to me: Not only does he deceive, we can think about how far he will go to beat us, trick us, outwit us, betray us, and hook us into his schemes! His schemes to keep us from focusing on God, are well-thought out, with surely an underhanded plot!
Now, something that really caused the light bulb to go off in my mind was...How it was the serpent that tricked the woman, and how did he do this? With Food! How often has he played that same trick, generation after generation on women? That to me is something interesting to think about! How many ladies (and men) has he placed a food issue on, a stronghold, that is keeping these precious believer's from furthering His Kingdom! He's tempting us with his same old scheme that he tempted Eve with.
#3. The truth we can all bank on today is that ALWAYS, always (!) God's plan involves a victory over Satan! Praise you LORD for this promise we can hold on to!

A question about something familiar, Eve was not surprised that the serpent "spoke" to her. Did Adam and Eve communicate with all the animals before this?
What struck me anew, like many others, was 3:16. "And you will desire to control your husband..." Until recently, I never thought of my issues with control as being a way of controlling my husband. People joke that I have OCD, which is not a laughing matter for people that do have it, but... I do have control issues! Major ones. It's been a constant battle with me and the Lord. But, seeing verse 16 state that fact about desiring to control our husbands, it hit me pretty hard. I try to control our situations and in essance, try to control him. God allowed it, but He did not design it.
Thank you, Wendy, for hosting this! I gave the testimony last night at a family gathering about God leading me here. It's awesome that I bought this exact bible 2 weeks ago without knowing God would give me this accountability and support group!

My husband said the same thing about the serpent talking. Interesting to think about. If they had not been talking to the animals I would think that she would have be more surprised in her response and said something to that effect in her response.
This is one of those things we have to accept by faith and go on. Smile

Hi again all! Welcome newbies and oldies alike.
I was struck with God's all knowing plan, and His love for his creation. Gen 3:22 shows the Trinity discussing what has happened, and making sure that the humans were kept away from eating from the tree of life. If they had done so after eating from the tree of knowledge, they would have lived forever in an eternal state of sin! No hope of Heaven and God's perfection if that happens. So God banishes them out of the garden. Thank you Lord for protecting and loving us so much.

I'm so excited to be here with you ladies! What an awesome way to start a new year - I read my section at 12:30 am, to ring in the new year right! =)
My new thing was seeing how God handled the whole fruit situation. First, He warned Adam not to eat it. (2:17)
Then, after they ate it, God came looking for them (3:9). The Lord then punished them justly (3:14-19). He cared so much for them that He made them clothing (3:21) and then protected them from the tree of life (3:22).
He never left them plus He continued to take care of them, because they were His kids (just like we would take care of our own kids!).
What a mighty God we serve!

Everyone, you have all given me things to really think about. Wendy I like your new format...makes me dig and think.
My thing that I didn't know...even though I have read it a lot of times, is God planted the garden of Eden AFTER He had formed Adam, 2:8,7,15.
Something else I knew, but was reminded of, was that men...and women...always pass the buck...the blame...to someone else. 3:12-13
1:1 In the beginning God.....its amazing that God formed everything from tiny fish to huge dinosaurs, to people, and He planned for the tides and days and months to control our seasons...and everything stays in sync with everything else after all these thousand years...just as He planned it in the beginning. The sun comes up every morning, the moon and stars come out every night, how could the "Big Bang" theory explain all the consistency of nature??? God made monkeys, and He made man...2 different kinds of creation... completely. Monkeys don't have souls or spirits, but WE DO! no big bang could have caused that!
Am really looking forward to what the Lord has planned for us this year as we read His Word..

One thing that jumped out at me in todays reading was how it said in Genesis 3:8 "the man and his wife heard God walking about in the garden"
My first thought was did they not hear him before? If not how did they know he was near? Perhaps they felt his presence. How beautiful to think that their realationship was that close before the fall.
That being said...my nugget for today is how can I nurture and spend time with God so that I can just feel Him-regardless of my fears and circumstances.
My second nugget is I feel I have really under estimated the sacred relationship between man and his wife. (vs 24). Has my understanding of this been really shallow? How much do I take my husband for granted? How can I nurture that sacred relationship with my husband?

My Nugget that I can apply to my life is in 1:11 "Everything produces after its own kind" If I am kind, it will produce kindness, if I am patient it will produce patience, so the things in my life that I desire, if I sow those seeds I will reap.
What did I see differently - vs 3:22-24 Last year I saw how and why they were banished from the garden.. This year I saw God talking. Then the Lord God said, "Look, the human beings" have become like us,.... who is God talking to? I got the visual of John 1:1 "In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God and the word was God." I knew Jesus and the Holy Spirit were there from the beginning I just didn't make the connection from this scripture before. That was awesome.
My New and my Seeing something in a different way both seemed new and different. :) Vs 1:6 Then God Said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth." I got this whole new visual of the heavens and earth being one - in unison. I'm not sure how to explain that... But it was great.

Okay, so like several others, chapter 3 v. 16 popped out at me in a new way. We women will always "desire" our husbands and want to control them, but they will "rule" over us. Yick. What an uneasy relationship mess this can make! My husband and I have very different love languages, and it seems to make this even more difficult. Still working on this one ... but glad to know it's not ONLY me that has to work on this!
Jan- I too noticed the "blame game" they played...Eve blaming the serpent and Adam blaming Eve. Sin had begun. And now think of toddlers...what is one of the first sins they commit? Blaming someone else. There's our sin nature!

Happy New Year Everyone! Just now getting to read all our reading for today. Staying up later last night meant sleeping in this morning till Will got up. 24 comments, that is awesome! You guys have all blessed me today with all your insights and thoughts.
Here are my thoughts on the three questions:
1. What did I see in a new way? From the very beginning, 1:3-4, when God says "Let there be light." Light was separated from darkness. Light and dark can never be in the same place. Light displaced darkness from the very beginning. When His light is shown into the dark things are made new. He did that in creation and He does that in our lives when He comes to live in and as we seek Him and trust Him daily to change us and complete the good work which He started (Philippians 1:6).
2. What I learned new- that the whole time Satan was talking to Eve and tempting her Adam was right there with her! 3:6 says that "she gave some to her husband, who was with her." Adam was not doing his job as protector and head when he allowed her to be deceived. God equipped our men to be our covering. I know sometimes I can be very naive and I am thankful that my husband sees things in a different way than I do. We need to be praying for our husbands faithfully for their role as leaders in our homes. They carry a lot on their shoulders. We need to always be asking God to give them the wisdom that they need. Even for those of us that have unsaved spouses, God can still give them wisdom in their decisions while He is working in their lives and drawing them to His Son.
3. My truth to take away to apply is based on Genesis 2:24, "a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one." Being married means that after God, my husband is first. I know in my particular situation that sometimes means following my husband's leadership even if my parents are not in agreement. He is to be first and I need to honor him and respect him and remember that in God's eyes we are one.

I'm sure it seems obvious to some, but I just think it is so cool we finished the Bible on New Year's Eve and are starting again on New Year's Day.
I lovelovelove this layout of the Bible, and will make it a part of my morning time with God for years to come.
As we are already seeing, the old becomes new and God meets us and speaks to us where we are. I am thinking after next year I am going to have to get a new Chronological Bible...I am using a different colored highlighter this year than last, and I think after three readings and three colors it will be time! Always thinking ahead, that is me!
Anyway.
I underlined a lot of new things today - many have already been mentioned (the springs that watered the ground, God said...And It Happened, God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy) - and I went back and looked at a few more from reading all of your posts:
*the commandment about the tree was given before Eve was created
*Genesis 3:16 foreshadowing John 3:16
*the power of God's promise in Genesis 3:15 that with his help we are triumphant over Satan
*God asking "where are you?" even after sin
Learning, learning, learning!
Familiar but new to me today is how Genesis 1:1, 1:3 and 1:26 line up with John 1:1-5
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The word gave life to everything that ws created and his life brought life to everyone. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.
A lightbulb moment for me was a deeper understanding of the fact Adam and Eve were naked but knew no shame - I had the thought today the lack of shame came not just from the fact they at that point knew no sin but also that they were Married. :)
My message for the day was a bit painful, as truth can sometimes be, but necessary if I am to walk the path God has for me in 2010 and accept the annointing for which he is preparing me:

After each day of creation, as well as the end, God always proclaims it as 'good'. How many times do we reflect on the day's events while laying in bed and think of regrets, missed opportunities, and sin that captured moments of the day. My desire is to WALK in His love, SHOW His love, and BELIEVE in His goodness everyday so that I can proclaim in the evening. . . it was good!

Did you guys know that "God" in Genesis 1:1 is the plural form of God? The trinity created all that we see. God the Father willed it, Jesus spoke it and the Holy Spirit created it (Beth Moore). Pretty awesome huh?! "Us" is the triune God. If you look in John, Jesus says that "no one has seen God at any time" (John 1:18). He also says, "And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form" (John 5:37. If Jesus is the only one to have ever seen God the Father, who was walking with Adam and Eve, could it have been Christ? Thoughts to ponder....

I have checked the "Another Update" on several computers at my house and had a friend check on her computer. We did not encounter any problems.
However, on one computer I used Internet Explorer (Typically I use Mozilla as my browser-it is a free download if want to change), anyway, I came up "blank" for the entire header of my website. It appears there is a setting that prevents you and me (on this particular) computer to see the graphics.
If you can't find anyone to find and change the setting, I would download Mozilla and use it to read my blog. I will be video teaching this year and don't want you to miss anything.

Today We're Pondering on: God created us without shame. It wasn't God, but the devil who told us to be ashamed. When we choose Christ, we reconnect with the original qualities God created us with-- including not having to be ashamed. We are sinners, but ones covered/clothed with the grace of God and no longer need to be ashamed. The world is controlled or driven by shame or the fear of it. A Christian is directed by the Holy Spirit and freed from fear and shame.
May God keep our spirits free to love and serve Him.
Hello and Happy New Year to all. This is my first post so wish me luck.
My takeaway nugget.... God personally told Adam not to eat of the tree. There was no doubt that word was from God. Adam allowed Eve to convince him it was ok. How many times has God spoken to me through prayer, friends, a pastor, a stranger etc. that I knew was from God yet I allowed someone to convince me otherwise and I followed down the wrong path. For 2010 I want to do better Obeying the Word, not just hearing it, reading it. I want to live it through.
I am so excited about this journey in God's Word. I too saw for the first time how Adam was instructed by God to not eat of the Tree of good and evil BEFORE Eve was created. Also for the first time I see two trees mentioned here. The Tree of good and evil and the Tree of Life. I always saw it as the same, but it appears to be two seperate trees??? So much to see just in these first few chapters.
"A New Day"
I am so excited about this journey. I have attempted to read through the Bible on my own but was always distracted or lost interest. Having people to talk to about the scriptures makes it so intriguing.
I had a late night last night and a sick little girl today so I got a late start on my reading. I was able to skim through most everyone's comments and enjoyed reading the insights.
I could ask a million questions about these passages but I think most of them I will have to wait to talk to God about. I tend to overanalyze everything.
The comment about the serpent interested me. I had never thought about Eve's lack of surprise at a snake talking to her. Maybe she was and it wasn't mentioned, I don't know but I find it interesting to think that they might have communicated with all animals. See I get hung up on little details.

I have been seeking a way to be in the Word each day, but I didn't know how to get started. I am so grateful that God lead me to your website, Wendy. Also, thank you so much for the link to studylight.org with the American Tract Society Bible Dictionary.
I have a tendency to get caught up in negative thoughts and I want to change. My nugget came with the word "earth". Gen 1:2-3 2 Now the earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
So I looked up the word "earth" in ATS Bible Dictorary part of it said, "In moral sense, earthly is opposed to what is heavenly, spiritual and holy." One of the verses it referred to was Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things that are on earth.
I have so enjoyed and learned a lot from God and each of you in just one day. Looking forward to the next 364!

My first post - and my first time reading thru the bible in one year. I had been saying for years that i would like to do this and now with the help and support of you all and friends and family I believe I can do it. :)
My "nugget" was much like a few of you already posted. Genesis 2-1 where God says he rested on the 7th day. As I look back over the last year I have not rested much. I believe that he made this 7th day Holy and rested becuase he knew how important it would be for all of us. I am going to try and make our Sundays more Holy and more resting for this 2010 year!
One thing I didnt know before today was - after Adam and Eve realized they were naked and had spoken to God. It says God made clothing for them. Genesis 3-20.
God is always providing for us even though we are sinners. My pondering this evening!
I am so excited about this study - and I am looking forward to learning so much from all of you!

I had read but never registered Genesis 2:19 "So the Lord God formed from the soil every kind of animal and bird" - I thought he just spoke and they came into being!
For me Genesis 1:1 stays with me "In the beginning God..."

1. NAME SOMETHING FAMILIAR = Gen 1:7 God created man by dust and breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils and the man became a LIVING PERSON..that is so powerful how he just breath and wow its a living person..i hadnt seen it that way..like we say in our church, GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME...
2. NAME SOMETHING NEW = Gen 2:23 this one is bone from bone, and flesh from flesh. she will be called "woman"...was this Eve first name until she disobeyed God?..then in Gen 3:20 then the man Adam named his wife "Eve"... something to think about, will be doing more research on this..if anyone has any plz let me know..
3. APPLY TO LIFE = Gen 3:6 just because things look beautiful or look delicious and like Eve wanted the wisdom it would give her, doesnt mean that it will be good for us..sometimes in our lives things look good or we might think we are better than others but we need to ask God to guide us and help us make the right choices...because if we dont we can fall very easily like Adam and Eve...

A little late to post, but will anyways. Some of these have already been discussed and some already are obvious, but I thought I'd list them too:
*talked to the animals originally?
*little or no pain in childbirth originally? 3:16 "I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth."
*"us"... the Trinity discusses:)
*Adam didn't name Eve until after they sinned
*God prevented man from living forever in the state of sin by banishing them from the garden and having access to the Tree of Life (Eternal Life).
*We were all vegetarians to begin with! Man ate fruit and plants, and animals only ate green plants.
No killing of each other, man or animal.
*God made the serpent, and he made the serpent the shrewdest of all animals... God made shrewdness? Maybe shrewdness in it's original form could be used for good (w/o the negative connotation we have now), if sin had never entered the world. God allowed the serpent to use it to bring sin into the world.
*Adam and Eve never "got married"... a ceremony that we know of or was written down.. they just became husband and wife.
*The blame game starts... Adam blames Eve ("the woman You made for me"!)... Eve blames serpent.

I read passages twice before I read comments. Now I must go back and read again with new insights. I always meant to read the entire Bible but haven't.
I didn't know there were separate paragraphs for each day? That was new to me - this is my first bible study, so this is going back to when I was younger!
I also agree w/Wendy regarding God calling for us even after we've sinned. Thank you Lord!
Wendy - I have the Life Application Study Bible, its not in the same order as the scriptures you want us to read, so I'm using the KJV...do you know of an easier way to use the Life App Bible? Or if anyone if our group knows of a way - please let me know, I'm a newbie here! Thanks!
Does anyone know why I get the message "This video has reached its monthly embedded playback limit." Play on Motionbox.com.? I did have to start and stop it three times. Will I miss the future videos if I don't click on Motionbox.com?
Anne, I got the same message and I had to click the tool bar to temporarily allow pop ups to see the video. Did not make sense to me but try that.

hi i am just joining the group for this year...i am excited about having a group to go through the word....todays reading reminded me that God has given us a sign...that we are so special that though we are always letting Him down he will give us another chance....and believe me..i need those chances....
