The answer was obvious by my vlog: Abram's decision to obey was the root of my inheritance as a Believer. Romans 4:16 is the proof.
For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

Don't always choose something based on its appearance.
This proved very detrimental to Lot. When given his choice of land, he choose the land that "appeared" to be the most fruitful. He ended up being taken hostage and losing all he had. He was blessed to have Uncle Abram to come and rescue him. Abram could do this because of God's promise to him.

I went back to see the last posts of yesterday and really loved what "Grace and Peace" told about the date the ark came to rest on Ararat coincides with the date of Christ's resurrection. Goes along well with the symbolism of the ark begin like Christ. Too cool.
Something new: The Trinity was discussing the tower of Babel when it says "Let's" go down and confuse the people. Gen 11:11:7
Something old: Abram gave Lot first choice. He was an amazing uncle to Lot.
Nugget: Abram stopped to worship the Lord wherever he was. I need to take time to worship wherever/whenever.

Something in a different way - Gen 11:27 The Family of Terrah. I paid more attention to the lineage that came from Noah. I'm not sure I paid attention to the fact that Lot's Father died and his uncle married his sister.
Something New - I'm with Wendy, Gen 12:19 I didn't know that Pharaoh took Sarai as his wife. Interestingly I went to read some commentaries on it and it said "might have taken her as my wife." I looked it up in different translations Amp,Mess,American Standard, and NLT all say He took her as his wife. The King James and New King James say he might have, and both commentaries that I checked went off that. Just a tid bit for the day.
Something for me to do: Do not lie to gain favor or riches. Gen 12:13 "So please tell them you are my sister. Then they will spare my life and treat me well because of their interest in you."
In one of the commentaries it stated how God did not want Sarai's womb defiled because she would be the Mother of many nations. So much could have changed if she had become pregnant with Pharaoh's child.
If God doesn't order it He can't bless it.

Wendy, I settled on the same verses and loved your vlog this morning. God took my mind to a different direction with verses 11:31-12:1-3. My something seen in a new way, something new and life lesson were all rolled into one:
One day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram's wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Heran's child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there.

I love how God will open my eyes to new truths in His Word each time I read a familiar story. Today when I read this account of Terah moving his family one word popped off the page at me. The word "settled." This man, this family, was headed one place and they stopped, they did not pick back up and move on, they settled. What obstacles did they face that made them stop and settle instead of picking back up and finishing their journey to their original desired destination? What about my own life? Where have I stopped and settled? Has God been moving me towards a desired destination and I have stopped and settled? Unfortunately, yes. I can think of two particular areas where I know I have settled. I am settling for less than God's best because the journey can be too hard.
But God, don't you love it when God buts in, as our Pastor said yesterday? He said to Abram, " 'Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father's family, and go to the land that I will show you.' " (Genesis 12:1) The Lord wants to take Abram away from all that he knows, all that is familiar to him and lead him to a new land. Why would Abram want to do this? One, because he trusts God completely. When we know God intimately we know that He would never ask us to do anything that is not His best for our lives. He would never ask us to step out into an unknown land if He was not going to be there leading and guiding the way. Two, there will be blessings beyond what Abram can even imagine. "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed though you." (Genesis 12:2-3) We can not even imagine what God has in store when we step out in faith and trust Him completely with where He wants to lead us. Abram could not see where God was leading him, by faith he obeyed (Hebrews 11:8). Because of his obedience, a whole nation with people too many to count came from him and Sarai who were past childbearing years (Hebrews 11:12). His obedience affected his descendants and ours does as well. The way I live out my faith affects my son and my family. It is not just about me, it is about God's grand story and I am just a small part, but my part is important and can bring tremendous blessing if I take the journey and not stop and settle.
Abram had to take his eyes off what he could see and trust in the unseen. God is calling me to do the same. So I choose to fix my eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Have you stopped and settled? Choose today, like me, to pack up your tents and move on to the land God will show you!

Something familiar but new:
I to found it interesting, regarding the tower of Babel, that the Lord was speaking with someone - "Come, let's go down and confuse the people..." It is very evident the trinity is present.
Something new:
The lineage of Shem. I found it interesting that the lifespan lessened with each generation as God proclaimed it would in Gen 6:3.
I also found it interesting that Terah didn't take Nahor with him and that Nahor had married Haron's daughter.
Nugget:
God wants us to rely on him for success. He doesn't want us to succeed by our own power like they were attempting with the Tower of Babel and when Abram decided to take matters into his own hands with the Pharoh.
Time to prepare for the day and get accustom to our routine! I could stay here longer!

I knew that Sarai was barren. I didn't realize that even the very first time she is mentioned in the bible she was labled as barren. v11:30
I found it interesting that Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram and then Abram gave a 10th of everything.

I had read before how wicked the people of the region were where Lot decided to establish himself, but hadn't noticed the scripture in Genesis 13:13 ..."people were unusually wicked..." Why would Lot knowingly chose to live there?
New to me was Lot being captured and then rescued by Abram in Genesis 14:1-16.
I kept reading and thinking about Abram building an altar to God and worshipping Him there - Genesis 12:7,8; Genesis 13:4 and then also in verse 18. I bought a Life Application Bible years ago, and it remains a favorite!
The notes on altars with Genesis 12:7 is beautiful :
"Altars symbolized communion with God and commemorated notable encounters with Him. Built of rough stones and earth, altars often remained in place for years as continual reminders of God's protection and promises... Building altars helped Abram remember that God was at the center of his life. Regular worship helps us remember what God desires and motivates us to obey Him."
How well we would do to pause, often and regularly, to offer up thanks and worship at intervals, placing "markers" at significant places in our lives...

I was struck by Abram's selfishness and lack of trust in God to protect him in Egypt. (Gen 12:14-20) Abram had Sarai lie and say she was his sister in order to protect himself. But he didn't seem to care that Sarai would then be in danger herself from Pharaoh. But God didn't forget her. He inflicted Pharaoh so he could not touch Sarai.
I need to trust God to take care of me!

I'm excited about this journey (speaking of journeys). I've wanted to read through the Bible for sometime now, but don't pick up habits very well. So far so good. :)
Something old in a new way:
Genesis 11:10-26 - The line of descent from Shem to Abram...that their life span started to lessen like God said it would.
Genesis 14:13 - Abram was called by one of Lot's men "Abram the Hebrew".
Something new:
Abram is not only faithful, but he is humble. He wouldn't take any winnings from his victory obtaining Lot except for what his men had eaten. Its like he matured a bit after Egypt.
Something to do:
Like you said Wendy, to relax and wait upon the Lord. I have a very short patience strand when it comes to life moving forward. I can wait in line, but only for groceries, not a job or money, or even an evening with my husband. My pause at the moment feels like it's hitting it's end, but I've been growing so anxious to move past it I've been pretty difficult.
Wait and trust in the Lord and His timing. :)

I was pondering in a whole new way what it must have been like for Abram knowing Sarai was now sleeping with Pharoah? What kind of feelings were they both having? Were they thinking this was now their life forever - them being apart? And poor Sarai - what must it have been like to have to be with Pharoah when her true love was living in fear.

Something new to me: In Gen 12:4 we read that Abram was 75 years old. I can't remember how much younger Sarai was than Abram but I'm thinking 10 years? At 65 years old he was worried that they might kill him because of her beauty. Our society today focuses so much on youth that we fail to appreciate the natural beauty of aging. The lines around the eyes from smiling, the gray hair that comes with age - and wisdom. I don't know why it struck me but it did.
Another new thing was that when Abram went to Egypt, there was a severe famine in Canaan. I am thinking that he did not have anything with him because he would have sold whatever he owned back in Canaan to get food. Gen 12:16 "Then Pharaoh gave Abram many gifts because of her—sheep, goats, cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels." Then after Pharaoh found out Sarai was Abrams wife, Gen 12:20 "Pharaoh ordered some of his men to escort them, and he sent Abram out of the country, along with his wife and all his possessions."
We see that Abram is not perfect. Yet God still blessed him.
I was looking at a commentary and it said that God did not command Abram to go to Egypt. I did not realize that. It further said: "Abram, like most of us, found it easier to trust God in the far-off promises than in the right-now needs."

My wife took this journey with you last year and motivated me to do it this year. She said there was one guy who would chime in last year so maybe I can be that “token” male influence. LOL Actually my son (who is six) and I are both doing it this year so I hope that we can be a good representative of the male gender.
My take away from day 4 has to do with location of Abram settling. The name Haran means “crossroads – a place of decision”. It was said that Haran was between Ai (heaps of ruins) and Bethel (House of God). So we see Abram at a crossroads between ruin and God.
More often then I think any of us would like to admit we are at crossroads in our lives where the decisions we make will lead us closer to God or to a heap of ruins. I have made decisions both ways but as in this story the best way to avoid the ruins are to hear God and move when he says move. Some of these decisions are difficult as it must have been for Abram. God can ask us to leave or families, our friends, our comfort zones but the key is to make the decision and go!
Another pondering point for me is the Trinity confusing people at the Tower of Babel to keep them from getting to the place where “nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” At first this made me angry to think that God would purposefully make me more confused than I already am.
I was comforted later to realize that God confused them to ensure reliance on Him. There are times that we just know better than our kids, even if we can’t always explain it. Even though God could explain it, He chose to make it a “because I said so moment”. I am thankful to God for caring enough to confuse me into reliance (it isn’t that hard to do).

I have enjoyed all the comments and just like last year if you post later on in the day, you will find most of us have a kindred spirit, and you will find yourself saying, "that's the same thing I was thinking".
My nugget today: It's awesome how we begin to see the trinty's presence from the very beginning of time. Several times the Lord says "we". Here we see Melchizedek just appear on the scene out of nowhere. That's because he was form of Christ. See Hebrews 7:1-3 below:
1For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
Thank God our high priest is still on the throne!

I never knew that Pharaoh took Sarai to be his wife. I'll ask my pastor about this when I see him tomorrow. We use the KJV in my church. My focus and thought was on how long people lived back then. Can you imagine the changes we'd see if we lived as long as they did? I always thought how interesting it was that my great grandfather was born in the late 1800's riding around with horse and buggy and died in the 1970's and had driven in cars by that time.
I am blind so I can't use the Bible you all are using but I will do my best to keep on track with you all as we go through the Bible together. I have the KJV Bible in my computer.
Last night at church, our pastor said over and over that we must be in the Word to know God and that we as parents must stimulate the desire in our children to become readers and hearers of the Word! I was truly convicted.
So before bed last night, I informed my son that he will be joining me on this journey of reading the Bible cover to cover in 2010. I read Day 1 out loud, and I said, well I guess we will have to catch up more another night - it's time for bed. His eyes got big and he said, but mom, it is a great story, read some more! So we finished off Day 2 as well. He asked questions and was really paying attention and enjoying it! I can't wait to read Days 3 and 4 tonight. =)

I am going to weave my three answers today, because I learned from each one! I have lots of To Do's :)
I was so enriched by having "just" read Hebrews 7 (Dec 18th) where I learned from our study together the similarity between Christ and Melchizedek(Genesis 14). This is repeated as well in Psalm 110:4. So exciting to see my notes in the margin I Just Made and reread the references!
I also smiled at the similarity between Abram's refusal to take more than he needed - he lived by faith and not by greed." Shades of the teaching of John the Baptist!
I thought in a new way about the tower of Babel because it is so like us as humans to just want more & more and bigger & better. The problem lies in forgetting or neglecting to give the glory to God. As we have just seen, we are fashioned from dust and ribs, and on our own cannot make a brick let alone build a tower. I caught today, too, the hand of Satan who said "I will raise my throne above the stars of God." Isaiah 14:13
Finally, I want to be reminded to not be weak of faith as Abram was in Egypt. I do not want others to ask of me as Pharoah asked of Abram "what have you done to me?" I want to follow the spirit's leading in every situation, even if it is frightening. Trials of faith are inevitable, as are storms. I want to face them holding God's hand, not wondering where it is. I pray God's help and guidance, for I surely cannot do it alone.
In Eden, God protected Adam and Eve though they sinned, and in Egypt he protected Abram and Sarai.
He is protecting all of us now. We are all safe in his tender care. Amen, amen, amen!

Something I heard in a new way...
"And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High brought Abram some bread and wine. Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing...Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the good he had recovered." Gen 14:18-20.
A few months ago, we were reading Hebrews 7 and I went back to note that chapter in the margin by Gen 14: 18. According to Hebrews 7 and commentaries read, Melchizedek was a represnetation of Christ...and look what he brought to Abrahm; bread and wine! He gave to Abram first then Abram gave him a tenth of all he rocovered...isn't this a picture of our salvation? Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners, even before we were born. Do I give even a tenth back to him?
I have lots to ponder on.

I just sent an email through MotionBox to have your approval on my viewing the video... so I don't know if you received it or not.
Ok, to the study today:
1. Old, but heard new: Babel folks wanted to be famous by building a tower. God did not want this, so He confused them so they would fulfill His purposes of scattering all over the earth. Abram never asked to be famous, but God told him he would make him famous. God is the bestower of "blessed fame", as opposed to infamous/selfish, human fame that can burden the spirit.
2. New/Unfamiliar: Sarai was very beautiful in the eyes of man. Isn't it just like man to treat "beautiful people" (all in the eye of the beholder, I do understand) differently than the rest of the population. I have to admit I fall prey to this sometimes as well... seeing celebrities and those in the media that should by "worshipped" and looked up to for their physical beauty (in human terms) by the populace. God gave them their physical attributes, whether they meet man's idea of beauty or not. In Sarai's position, God used it to bless Abram and his family, but it eventually back-fired and caused them to be escorted out! I love God's idea of beauty: Beauty that comes from a gentle and quiet spirit. God puts a great value on this. God sees past the outward straight into our hearts.
3. Nugget: When is it ok to lie for the sake of God's plan (or how we think things should go down, LOL)? Abram took things into his own hands lied about the relationship in order to be saved from death and was looking to be treated well (Gen 12:13) by the Egyptians. Kind of looking out for himself and his family! I wonder if he hadn't lied, there would have been more blessing on him, knowing God would protect him from death and that God would provide for him and his family. Abram lied, but was it to save his own neck/family in order to continue to be the father of many nations, as God had promised?... or was it more human needs that drove him to lie? I know we'll see this come up again in Sarai's situation in trying to have a child outside of God's perfect plan... again, God using our sinfulness for His larger purpose... what a relief! Not a reason to sin on purpose, but to understand and never take for granted His grace and higher ways/purposes when we inevitably "mess up" in our sinful state.
Love this 3 question format.. things just keep popping out at me.

Pondered on how Abram with just 318 men rescued Lot when Sodom's army ran away. It's amazing how God uses the little/small/weak when they are being obedient to Him.

I enjoyed the reading today - although I have to admit it was all new for me today. I am sure sometime in the past I have heard it before but sadly don't remember. Another reason why this journey is so important to me.
One comment made earlier - we must be in the word of God. So true! I find that when I stay in the word and stay close to God sin stays at a distance but when I start to wonder off that is when I start to feel tempted again.
I had a couple questions - if anyone reads and cares to respond I would greatly appreciate it.
1. Genesis 11:7 - Why do you think God said to come down and make diffrent languages that way the people would not be able to understand each other - and also God said to scatter the people all over the world. I am assuming is must have something to do with the town of Babel??
2. Genesis 12:13-20 - Abram told Sarai to lie to Pharoah about being his wife. I know this was to save his life but it was not the truth and Pharoah was going to take Sarai regardless if she was Abram's sister or wife. Just pondering thoughts.

This opportunity is an answer to my prayers, and I did have to wait a while for the answer! However, the 'pause in my journey' made me hungrier and thirstier for God's Word! A few years ago I was able to join Bible Study Fellowship for 1 year. I SO enjoyed the in depth study and sharing with others on the same journey. I always learned so much from the others in the study. Due to my husband's work schedule and having 3 little ones at home, I've never been able to join BSF again. I have prayed for a similar opportunity, and Wendy, this is it! This is like BSF, right from my own home. HALLELUJAH!! I don't have to hire a babysitter in order to meet with all of you cyber friends. I tuck my kids in bed at night and then sit here reading all of your comments. 1. SOMETHING FAMILIAR = Gen 11:7 God said "LETS GO"...never noticed the LETS (trinity) wow how awesome...Gen 11:9 didnt know that "Babel" meant confussion...
2. SOMETHING NEW = Gen 12:18-19 i guess i have skipped this part because i dont remember reading it..didnt know Pharaoh had actually married Sarai...i just thought he liked her...
3. APPLY TO LIFE = Gen 13:10 Lot took the fertile plains fo the Jordan and because he thought he would be better he ALMOST lost everything if it werent for his uncle Abram...we need to be careful when we choose something...its not always green on the other side...also no matter where we are, if its a dr office, walmart, restruant, we should always praise God just like Abram did..didnt matter where he was at he always built an altar and worship God...
Brandee - I like to research names for meanings and I can't recall the exact translation dictionary I found that on. But I believe the "journey" started with (2.) Heb. HARAN, i.e., "parched;" or probably from the Accadian cHARANa, meaning "a road."
What everyone said has given me much to think on! Thanks everyone for your insight.
What strikes me about Gen. 11:1-9, about the Tower of Babel is that the people were in such unity that what they proposed would happen. God new that because of them being in 'one accord' they would build that tower.
Imagine how we could build the kingdom for God if we, as His children, would be in unity! There is such power when people agree. That's why the Towel of Babel speaks to me. Imagine the power that could be unleashed to us, from the Creator, if we all stood as one.
I also love the story behind Abraham meeting Melchizedek...I believe He was more than a resemblance of Christ... I believe it was Christ. That blows me away!
