The East Side of the River
The Reubenites and Gadites (who were placed together on the South side of the Tabernacle) have made the decision to settle on the east side of the Jordan. Moses wasn't keen on the idea but did concede when tribal leaders assured Moses of their full military support. They had waited all this time, their ancestors died in the desert never seeing the Promised Land. Why in the world would they stop short and settle for the land on the east side of the Jordan?

We need to turn back the hands of time and the pages of our book to Genesis. Reuben, the first born of Jacob, son of Leah, slept with his father's concubine, Bilhad. Fast forward at bit in Genesis toJacob on his death bed, when we learn this secret was not a secret after all. Reuben's sin cost him and his descendants to "no longer exel or be first." I thought it was ironic that Moses warns the tribal leaders that if they do not keep their word and fight with the Israelites, their sin would be found out. How true for this group of people.

I believe knowing of the words of Jacob, the Reubenites and Gadites decided to make their own plans. They would not be allowed the blessing of the first born, the double portion upon entering the Promised Land. They saw a beautiful spot to settle. A place that would be profitable and provide nicely for their families so they took it.

They missed the blessing of God. They did not look at the big picture of what it meant to stay with family and receive what God has promised them. How often to we do this? How often to we settle for the east side of the Jordan?

I lived many years on the east side. I tried to make my own way. Striving, manipulating, and wandering through life afraid to cross the Jordan.
Listening to the lies of the enemy, I thought because of the sins of my past, that I was not worthy for the blessing of the Promised Land. I settled for the "green and plush" country side of "almost but not close enough." Until....

Until one day, through work of the Holy Spirit I began to see the other side and discovered that I was (am) worthy of receiving the blessing that was (is) due to me as a child of God, wholly and dearly loved.

Where do I live today dear one? It took many years but I SHOUT that I reside in the Promised Land my Lord intended me to have. I still have battles with the "ites" but victory is mine each time I surrender the battle to my Commander-and-Chief. Life is not perfect in the Promised Land but it is purposeful, hopeful, and amazingly satisfying. It flows with blessings and is ripe with riches untold. I never want to live anywhere else, at least on this side of heaven.

Wendy...I LOVE THIS!!!!!

"How often to we settle for the east side of the Jordan?"

Lysa wrote a post back on January 1st of this year entitled, "Unsettled", and her words have stayed with me over all these weeks. I think "unsettle me" might be one of the most beautiful prayers my heart has heard. Frightening...but surrendering. Surrendering to His plans and purposes for each new day.

Again, God is calling me from yesterday's longing of contentment to today's yearning for holiness.

Two words, repeated over and over in todays reading spoke to me, "They left..." Asking the Lord what I need to leave behind to journey to the next step with Him.

Thank you so much for being used to speak to my heart this morning Wendy...I was so desperate for a Word from Him.

Blessings,
Joy

I totally lost it last night. I'm completely exhausted...the tears continually flow. Praying for a miracle today. Thanks again for all your prayers. It's only because I know He lives, that I can face today.

Loved your post dear Wendy! Surrending ourselves each day to do God's will. Reuben lived his life to gratify himself in the present. He brought dishonor to to his own father...then his descendants brought dishonor to our Heavenly Father by not wanting to live across the Jordon River. After all the years in the desert, to not want to cross over! Of course, how many times to we seek worldy things...Doesn't the enemy do his best at keeping us yearning for the East side of the river? But, the Promised Land is where I desire to be...tucked close under the shadow of His protective wing!

Joy I'm praying for you and your family today..."The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places."
Isaiah 58:11

Diane, I am very sorry about what you are going through. I will pray that you will feel God's loving presence with you. In all times He is with you; wherever you go, God is there too.

Have a wonderful day, dear sisters! I'm thinking now about...Wendy (Mamma Duck w/ Bible in hand...and all of us little chicks (with Bible's in hand)...following close by her...:)
walking over to Diane's for coffee and chocolate as we sit facing each other studying God's precious word! Love you all,

I too love where you landed today Wendy.

Your message spoke to my heart and encouraged me, particularly as my notes today centered on the LORD's command to Israel to drive out the inhabitants of the Promised Land and his caution of splinters in the eyes and thorns in the side were his command not obeyed. My lesson there ~ incomplete obedience invites evil consequences, which led me to search my life for the places I am not obeying completely.

Your message was an answer to that ~ in part, anyway, I believe ~ I think I may have been hanging out on the East side of late.

God bless you Wendy & God bless all of you fellow students and teachers.

Wendy - thank you for sharing your gift with us. Your blog today was so interesting and insightful.

Joy - again, your family is in my prayers. I checked your update on your dad - how awful. I am a bit of a control freak and I think I would be absolutely losing it in your situation - I like to see things getting done, and sitting and waiting about kills me. Your situation is one where I ponder what God is doing; yet in faith I hold onto His promise that He knows the plans He has for you and that they are not to harm you. Hang on to His promises. His VOWS are never recanted.

My nugget for today: Numbers 33:55 - drive out the people who live in the land, or they will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides.- When I fail to surrender my strongholds to the Lord, they remain as splinters and thorns, constantly an irritation, and demanding of my attention. Lord, please help me to surrender ALL areas of my life to you. I know I hold on to things I need to let go of. Like Joy said: " They Left" what do I need to let go of? An excellent and also difficult question.
Thanks ladies...

Thanks so much for your insight.

Too many times I have settled for what I perceive to be the best--because I can't fathom God's perfect plans for my life. It all comes down to a lack of trust and sellf-reliance, I am not believing that God has a "promise land" out there for me.

Have a good day. In Wisconsin it is very gloomy--so soak up some rays for me if you can!

God’s plan for us is always far better than what we can plan for ourselves and the ones we love.

Lord help us not to stop on the East side of your perfect will for our lives because of unbelief!

Joy and Diane, my thoughts and prayers are with you. God's grace is sufficient and he is the God of ALL comfort.

Blessings!

Ladies,

Not much to say today except thank you for the prayers and please continue.

Wendy, I have never sought the best because I have never felt worthy of it. I am so glad the Lord has opened my eyes in these past years. But Satan is alive and well and will try to get in if he is allowed.

Lori,I loved the mental image of Wendy as mamma chick and all us as other chick sitting around.Of course we all would be some hot looking chicks.

Joy, hold on my friend, joy comes in the morning. Peace to you and your family in this very hard time.

I am going to rest for a bit,
Blessings,
Diane
