"What if the LORD had not been on our side?" Psalm 124:1
Psalm 124 is part of 15 songs known as the Songs or Psalms of the Ascent. These Songs or Psalms are believed to have been sung by the Israelites as they their annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The songs recounted what the Lord had done for them. We have journeyed with God's people since the Exodus and know full well what would have happened if the LORD had not been on their side.
I challenge us all to find a quiet place to reflect on today's key verse. In your journal or a piece of paper answer the question, "What if the LORD had not been on our [my] side?" (Emphasis mine) I shutter to think where I would be. How about you?

Wow! Wendy, this morning's blog was like an oasis in the desert. All week I struggled with reading the Psalms...feeling like I could not connect.
The key verse this morning, along with the song you posted from Third Day felt like a warm and soothing envelopment of His love. He is there with me, even when I feel alone...even when I forget that He is there.
Thanks, Wendy. Love you girls,
nancy
P.S. By the way, I am reading the "yadayada Prayer Group". So far, I love it!
What if the Lord had not been on my side? I actually get ill thinking about how empty my life would be. Surely, I would not have my husband (we came to know the Lord separately as we were heading for divorce, not realizing that God was working in the other's life). And, I would not have my beautiful four babies. Had He not been loving me and devising plans to bring me to Him.....I can't even think about the what if's!!! But, let me never forget what could have been had the Lord not been on my side.
Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things He does and has done for me.
Thank you Lord for being on my side!! THANK YOU!!!
And thank you, Wendy!!
Love, Dawn
"I must go through the valley, to stand upon the Mountain of God". I'm finding this so very, very true. Beautiful song.
Like Nancy said above, this blog is like an oasis in the desert. So refreshing every morning to connect here and spend time in God's Word. I know it is what is keeping me not only accountable thus far in our journey, but daily excited and filled with anticipation to see how God will speak to me. Wendy, thank you again.
Your question also reminded me of Psalm 103: 2 in today's passage. "Let all that I am praise the LORD: may I never forget the good things he does for me." The "good things" may not necessarily mean they are/were "good", but they are making us "good" and changing us into His likeness. I start my list of praise today, knowing I wouldn't be alive had the Lord not been on my side. Born at 25 weeks, weighing only 1 pound, Dr's gave absolutely no hope for my survival. The Lord alone breathed life into my frail frame. I will take time to be reflective and thank Him today for all that He has done and is doing. When the Lord is on our side, we need no one else. God is enough!
The verse I highlighted today was Psalm 108: 2, "I will wake the dawn with my song." Reminded me of the lyrics to Steve Green's "Awaken" song. I will end with the chorus here.
"I will awaken the dawn
Be the first voice of praise with a song
Till the morning joins in and creation begins
To awake to the sound of this song."
Singing,
Joy
If the Lord had not been on my side I would not be where I am today, I know that for sure. I would still be in the pit of despair, shame and insecurity. One of the first books I read when I came back to the Lord was Beth Moore's "Jesus the One and Only." It has been years since I read it, but there was a part in there talking about God's fingerprints on your life. I would have to get the book back out to quote it exactly but it made such a profound impression on me as a new believer how God was there all along, walking me through everything to make me into the woman He designed for the specific plan for my life. I might not get to journal much today on this, but I will for sure asap. My son has a sinus infection and I was up majority of the night with him coughing from the drainage. Needless to say we are both really tired and are going to be resting and taking a nap later.
Hope you all have a blessed day! Great thoughts Wendy! I love Psalm 103 too- what a great list of all the things God does for us!
Love,
Brandee
Everyone, Goodmorning!
Wow, God's Word just gives us the boost each day to keep pluggin' along, doesn't it? I can't imagine, if the LORD had not been on my side. Wendy, thanks for the song! To know that we were never alone, to know that He was always with me. Even from before I was born, He picked me out to be His. When I lose my way, He brings me back again! And, up on the Mountain of God is worth the valleys we have to go through!
I loved the beginning of our reading today.
"Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name...may I never forget the good things he does for me." As I finished up Psalm 103, I was reminded that He does so much for me everyday. Help me not take it for granted! It is mind-boggling to know just how much He cares for me. The love I feel for Him makes me want to reach up high, on my tipsy toes, hands up, in complete awe of him. I read some where once, that they only use the word "awesome" to talk about God. As I read that word in the Bible I think so much about how my God is so very awesome. I find myself not able to say that word too. Just if I'm talking about God.
What an awesome God we each have!
Blessings,

What a great question to ponder today. What if the Lord had not been on my side? I have been struggling lately and The Lord encouraged me enough yesterday to make it through and to remind me that I am not alone and he is with me always. I so needed it and HE provided it.
Thank You Jesus.

Oh, I shutter to think what my life would be like if the Lord had not been on my side. I think I'll stop and praise His Name!!!
What would my life have been without God on my side? What life?

Wendy, just love the question to ponder this morning. What if God had not been on my side?
Oh, my gosh He has been with me through all the peaks and valleys, peaks and valleys, peaks and valleys!!!
I have no idea how those who choose not to "fear the Lord" (trust and obey Him) make it in this life. Praying one day their eyes will be opened to His amazing grace, healing, encouragement, teaching, leading and guiding.
The longer I travel this faith journey the more I see his ways, his truth, his ever presence in my life the more I am able to grow in faith and trust...knowing God has the whole picture...and he makes good of all things that happen in our lives. It has taken me a long time to arrive at this place in my journey with the Lord...indeed Nancy, it is an oasis in the desert kind of feeling. I'm not completely there yet but He's certainly not done with me yet!
Praying you ladies have a wonderful day...driving to Indiana to spend some time with my daughter and my little "Smyliee Ryliee Sweet Pea". She's walking now...looking forward to the day she runs towards me with open arms shouting GramEeeeeee! But I must not get ahead of myself in thought...don't want to grow her up too fast...enjoying every moment as a first time Grandma!

What if the Lord had not been on my side? I would be sitting in a pit of depression with no hope of getting out. I would be settling for much less in my life. God definitely is our Hope and Healer!
I loved reading Psalm 103 today in the NLT version. I loved verse 13, "The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him." What a comfort as I read this, not only for me, but for my children as well. I pray often that they would come to know God in this way.
Thank you to all for your prayers and insights. I also am agreeing with everyone who commented that this blog is like an oasis for our weary souls. What I love most of all is that the refreshment comes from God's Word and His Truth. There is no better.
Love and hugs to all of you!!!
What if the Lord had not been on my side?
I would never feel the warmth of the sun
The rain would seem never ending
My days would have no purpose
My life would have no meaning
Love would never reach my heart
Hate would be the norm
Satan would appear to be a king
And
There would be no hope.
Those are awful truths of someone dying with out knowing Christ as well.
I am so glad that I am a child of God and that He is on my side.
It was a good thing to ponder Wendy.
Great thoughts ladies,
Diane
