I have a prayer request: My Mom is having surgery this morning at 10:15. It's a simple procedure (removing her gall bladder, but there may be some problems with surrounding organs). Nothing ever seems to be simple for her and I know God is at work; but, I also know the enemy has attacked her over and over this past year. She is very light and weak and takes lots of med's. A big concern that I've lifted up to my Father is that He will allow her body to be off of them today, and go back onto them without any side-problems. That no reactions will happen. And, that she will be able to sleep. Aaahhh, she needs rest and recovery and health again. She had a wonderful time in the Word over the weekend. Jehovah-rapha, The Lord Who Heals, my Father, who will be with my mother every step of the way.
I'm reading along, taking my Bible with me when I'm in the hospital...
won't be posting until time opens up. God clearly showed me yesterday how He was asking me to prioritize right now. My computer time will not be on my plate as I care for her and her home. God is good, and I know He will help me do this with love.

Something new: Gen 17:17 Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. I knew Sarah laughs (tomorrows reading) but I hadn't notice that Abraham did also.
Something different: I noticed how many times God said he was making a covenant and confirming a covenant. Gen 15:18, 17:2,4,7,19,21. It made me smile thinking ya God really knows us and knows we want/need that continual confirmation "God if that's you give a sign" :)
Something to Apply: Gen 17:9 "Then God said to Abraham (Lynn) "Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and your descendants have this continual responsibility.
How many times are we so quick to remind God of what He said He would do verses how often we look at ourselves and ask the question - Did I do what I was supposed to do?

Something familiar but new:
In Gen 15 God had promised to Abram many descendents but never mentioned he or Sarai would be father/mother of many nations. It appears to be around ten years later in Gen 16 when Sarai used Hagar to bear a child. It states Abram was 86 years old when Ishmael was born. Then when God appeared to Abram in Gen 17 he was 99 years old. This is where God changes his name - telling Abraham that he will be father of many nations and that Sarai now to be named Sarah will be the mother of many nations. I didn't realize the length of time before God actually was going to fullfill his covenant with Abraham.
New:
Isaac means "he laughs". God knows our inner thoughts and he is a humorous God!
Nugget:
God wants us to be patient and to rely on him for fullfillment. God's timing is not our timing. He wants the miracles He performs to only be identified as fullfilled by El-Shaddai - God Almighty! Oh how I needed this nuggett as I wait patiently-ha- on him!

Before I condense the copious notes from my notebook about today's reading I have a couple of response I just Have to make:
**Wendy - 33 degrees is Cold. :) Having lived in interior Alaska and spent many weeks going in and out of 40 - 50 Below, I can testify 33 Above can also feel warm by comparison, but overall I start bundling up around 40 degrees!
**Lori - I missed your "voice" yesterday and am so relieved you checked in! It is my honor to pray for your Mom Pat. Pat was my stepmother's name. :) I pray God's blessing for a safe surgery, a speedy recovery and comfort and rest for you Both. Big Hugs!
**Karen - your post Really touched me today. "Know my name and what it means...Be prepared to accept a new name for a new situation. When God calls me by name what will that be?" *whew* Powerful words from his heart to mine through you. Thank you, and glory to Almighty God. The verse you closed with is one of my absolute favorites, as well. :)
Familiar but new to me this morning was the lessons we can learn from Sarah...and Sarah and Hagar. Wendy has spoken to some of that in her vlog. Impatience, pride and jealously can get us into a world of hurt and years of heartbreak.
God has plans for our lives...plans which will allow us to thrive and not be knocked down by life's setbacks (Jeremiah 29:11)
We can pray to El Shaddai to help us resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands when we perceive God might be taking a little bit too long. As I heard it put, when we walk in the spirit we are carried along calmly in the presence of God, but when we take matters into our own hands it become turbulent...like riding the rapids in a rubber raft!
My something new was to realize the age difference between Ishmael and Isaac - it caught my eye today Ishmael was 13 when circumcised...and Isaac had not yet been born.
My lesson (if my new to me was not enough) was Abraham bowing to the ground yet laughing in amazement. I so get Abraham on that one. He's been told "I am your shield and your very great reward" Gen 15:1 and "I am El Shaddai God Almighty" Gen 17:1. Too, Abraham has proved himself to be faithful and obedient...still, he cannot comprehend what God can do through him. It's just too amazing! God is not bound by what "usually happens", and I think he forgives our chuckles of joy, surprise and amazement...as long as we are bowing and believing.
I think of Zechariah, who when he was told he & Elizabeth would have a son in their old age and name him John (and he, too, would be very great), answered in disbelief and his speech was frozen as a result. I think the difference was Abraham believed through faith, Zechariah did not...but he learned! :)
I totally love God's sense of humor in blessing the entire world through Abraham and Sarah's son Isaac, whose name, chosen by God, means "he laughs". We descend from love and laughter:
"Creation came into being out of the laughter of the Trinity. God enlarged the circle and drew us in." ~Meister Eckhart
May our father God, El Roi, El Shaddai show you something today to make you laugh in belief and amazement,

I came here prepared to write about Abraham and his faith and even had some notes to link to Romans 4 but what you said about Hagar got me on a new path.
I have never paid much attention to Hagar either. There she was pregnant by her master and being mistreated by her mistress. Her thought was to run away. Sometimes when we feel we are not being treated fairly by those in authority over us - a husband for instance, we tend to run away from the situation as well. But the angel (on behalf of God)commanded her, as He commands us, to return and submit to the authority He put over us.
And what I love is how God was tender with her. I never realized that Ishmael means "God hears." God heard a mother's cry for her unborn baby. And eventhough the angel's prophecy for her baby was less than ideal, it didn't matter to her. To a mother's heart, it doesn't matter. Her baby lives. It makes me realize - every person no matter how "bad" they seem in our eyes was once a baby loved, hugged, and held by a mother.
It is such a comfort to know that God heard Hagar then and He hears us now.

Did any of you notice that Hagar, in 16:1, is one of the female slaves that Abraham brought back from Egypt in 12:16. By Abraham sinning, and not trusting God and going to Egypt, he brought back a number of slaves that Pharaoh gave to him, one of which was Hagar, and this is where all the trouble began.
About the circumcism, Matthew Henry's commentary says, "Circumcism was a bloody ordinance, for all things by the law were purged by blood. (Hebrews 9:22) But the blood of Christ being shed, all bloody ordinances are now abolished. Circumcism gives way to Baptism.(I thought this was an interesting statement.) True circumcism is that of the heart. I Corinthians 12:23-24."
The study this year is really making me dig...and that is good. God is using His Word to speak to me.

I just wanted to say "thanks SO MUCH" for your comments each & every day! I look so forward to coming home and doing my study and reading them each evening. I'm off work today so I've already spent 2+ hrs reading & digging, and now reading your comments. (I wish I could spend this amount of time everyday...God willing, I can!)
God really spoke to me through chapter 16 today...with both Sarai & Hagar's situations. This is where I did most my digging before reading your comments & seeing Wendy's vlog. As Liz from AR said, impatience, pride and jealously can get us into a world of hurt and years of heartbreak. I thank God for this passage today and what he is speaking to me. I'll have to bare through it because it's my mess but I'm also learning that although wrong choices have already been made, He is such a forgiving God and now I have to let go of the guilt and move forward, with His grace.

First of all I want to thank Karen for her link to the daily readings. I did not make it on yesterday, but have been doing my reading, however my Bible has me in Job!!!! Aaaargh! It is the same "The One Year" only in the NIV version. Does this make a difference (NIV) or is this a misprint???? The NIV stays in Job until Jan. 18 and then picks back up in Gen. 11. I guess I'll go back to my regular Bible and just follow the reading that I printed from the website.
Wendy, I was able to view the video just fine today, no need to go anywhere else and join anything. It just started right up when I clicked on it! :) This technology is so wonderful. We take it for granted, don't we. Thank you for doing this so we can feel like we are all setting together chatting.

I am new to reading with you. I have never found a way to accomplish disciplining myself to have a daily devotional time with God. Please pray for me that I will find the right time and will use the self-discipline that God has given me to read and study his word. I feel very ignorant.
Heard in a new way:
Even though Abram did not understand how he and Sarah would bear a child at that age, he still had faith that they would, when he asked "MAY Ishmael live under your special blessing" He still expected the blessing.
Also, in verse 10, when Abram obeyed Godin the sacrifice, the vultures swooped down. How like the devil. How often when we obey God, the vultures swoop down.
Nugget:
In 17:9, God said to Abraham, "YOUR responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant" Obedience to God is my responsibility if I am to receive the reward of everlasting life.

1. familiar but new: Sarai, pronounced Sayr-ray-i,all vowels are long, means princess;God told Abraham that he and Sarah would have descendants some of whom would even be kings.
2. New:13+ years between Ishmael and Isaac. God promised Ishmael would be the father of 12 princes.
3. Life app.: God sometimes chooses to reveal His plan to us but I must be careful not to impose my timetable on His promises.

I, thankfully, have not had any trouble with the videos - I love that as I am a very visual person and I can watch Wendy and go through the Bible at the same time. But then, I am truly grateful for Joyful's synopsis - reading it is like getting a whole new prespective on what I just watched. I love that - thanks so much for your time and talent - you are a blessing.
Praying for that need time and healing today and I ask for prayers for myself. I am a single mom with 2 teenagers. I will be losing my job by month's end and am desperately seeking employment. I know God has a plan and am trying to be faith to Him and where that plan leads.

I've been thinking about the fact that Hagar called God a new name. I don't know if she had a true relationship with Him, but she obviously thought something of Him. Coming from Egypt, I'm even thinking she still had other gods, and just 'added' to them without knowing who Sarah and Abraham were really serving. That experience opened her eyes in a way that she had never known. Not only was it God who saw, but I believe she did to an extent, otherwise she would have never returned.
I just love the fact that in everything God is always telling us what's to come. Whether it's the prohpecy of the Israelites in bondage, or Ishmeal(Muslims) having his/their hand against everyone, to Christ's coming. God had always given us a picture of what's to come and what's to be done.
It goes to show me even more that we are without excuse once we have a revelation of the truth.

Abram believed the Lord concerning his descendants (Gen 15:6) and later (Gen. 17:17) laughed in disbelief.
Something new:
Gen. 15:17 mentions Abram seeing a smoking firepot and flaming torch passing between the halves of the carcasses. I'm sure this is a word picture for something but not sure what.
Application:
Abraham is considered a faithful and righteous man, but his struggles at times are evident. It is freeing for me to realize that God still accepts me with all my flaws. What is most important to Him is my heart.
