It’s a good question about the NLT/NIV readings. In the Chronological OYB, many of the readings are indeed shifted. Essentially, the reading schedule for the NLT is more recent and updated than the NIV reading schedule. As Bible scholarship has advanced, more is known about the dates of Biblical events and passages. So some passages have been shifted in the NLT Chronological OYB. The biggest shift was that the book of Job was moved up to reflect that it probably was written during the time of the events in Genesis. As this is a sizeable book, this shifted the following readings quite a bit. After the NIV edition passes Job, the readings in the two editions get closer again.
I’m sorry this has been a hassle for your readers! The good news is that within a few years, we will be publishing an updated edition of the NIV Chronological OYB, so the readings will match up with the NLT readings at that point.

Brrr...it is cold here too! Someone said in our PTF meeting the other day it is the coldest winter TN has had in 25 years. I believe it because I don't remember it being like this. We still have snow covered roads. They said the salt does not work in temps under 20 degrees so we just go slow and once you hit the main roads it is fine.
There were several things that stood out to me this morning:
My NEW TRUTH was Genesis 26:7-11 where Isaac did the same thing to Rebekah as Abraham did to Sarah in asking that she pretend to be his sister.
My APPLICATION verse was Genesis 26:35, "But Esau's wives made life miserable for Isaac and Rebekah." I wrote in my Bible, "What kind of DIL am I?" My relationship with my FIL has been a challenging one over the years. It can still be awkward but it is a lot better than it was at first. I keep praying and keep asking God to give me wisdom and that he will see Christ's love and light shining out of me. When I am rejected when I try to reach out I pray that I can keep trying and never give up. I pray often for him and that God will touch his life in amazing ways with His love.
I also was drawn this morning to look up the meaning of our family's names since that is something we have been talking about some. Ok guys, mine just means "distilled wine" lol. John's was very cool though, it means "YAHWEH is gracious." LOVED that!

Welcome to the weekend! Yes!
In today's reading we see the birthright switching from Esau to Jacob. I think there is so much to learn from these brothers' relationship. Why did God choose for Jesus' lineage to come from Jacob and not the eldest, Esau? Jacob seemed sneaky and coniving, but Esau lacked faith and had total disregard for what that special birthright meant.
Jacob was the father of the Isrealites and Esau the father of the Edomites - bitter enemies.
In Malachi and Romans there are verses that state that God loved Jacob but He hated Esau. Now God's kind of hate is different than human hate; He always hates sin so I'm assuming alot of sin came down from Esau. What a fascinating study this could be in itself. What's our lesson from the 2 brothers? Makes me want to dig, dig and dig some more.

I too was struck by the fact that Isaac deceived the same way his father did. Granted, Sarah was Abrahams half sister, but the intent is still the same. Deception.
I am wondering how old Abimelech is? He had dealings with Abraham and yet, here he is, years later, having dealings with Isaac.
When Abimelech says that Isaac could have caused 'great sin' if one of the kings people has taken Rebekah... I wonder if he still feared the God of Abraham.
Take away: Deception reigned from one generation to the next and yet God still blessed this people. God could see ahead in time and already knew what would happen to each generation. He knew every heart, in the deepest sense. He knew my heart, knew my own faults and failures, and deceptive ways and yet He still loves me.
How great is the compassion and unfailing love of our God!!

I am so enjoying this year with the additon of the "vlog"! But I am having trouble organizing my quiet time I guess. Some mornings I feel like my "quality" prayer time is cut short, and I wonder if I should pray BEFORE I read and study. Just wondered if some of you (or Wendy) could comment on what "ORDER" you do your study, reading, prayer, etc...any suggestions would help, as I feel like with this new year I need to change up my routine some! NO CROSSROADS FOR ME!!! (haha)

I too did not remember Isaac claimed Rebekah to be his sister in Gerar as did Abraham with Sarah (twice!).
This morning I realize my To Do is to follow the theme of Moving On we've been learning together this week. Out of the crossroads into the promise.
Just as Isaac moved along to find an Open Space (Genesis 26:22) we learn if we keep moving along, the Lord will will be with us, we need not be afraid. His promise is true and faithful.

Hey Kim, I start at night before I go to bed. I ask the Lord to wake me (set the alarm)so I have enough time with Him in the morning. In the morning I 1st pray & meditate on God. I read the passages for the day, then do the the questions. I go to Wendy's blog, I listen & read her words. I put my thoughts in the comments. I either read what others have to say then or later when I have more time. So far this is working for me. Praying you find what works for you.
1) heard in a new way;
Genesis 26-27 the whole story of the brothers Esau & Jacob. The parents played a big part in the division of the two sons.
2) did not know before;
Genesis 26:7-11 Isaac deceives the same man King Abimelech of the Philistines, saying his wife is his sister. How old is Abimelech?
Gen 26:35 Esau's wife made life miserable for Isaac & Rebekah
Gen 27:46 Rebekah doesn't like the ways of the Hittite women. She doesn't want Jacob to marry one of them.
3) nugget to apply to your life;
Be careful of how I treat my children so that they will not become envious, jealous of each other. I need to treat them fairly but that doesn't mean it is equal all the time. I did tell them in the long run everything balances out.

Something I didn't know. I've always had trouble with the names of people and how they interact in later scripture.
Esau married daughters of Heth, who are ancestors of the Hitittes or Hivites. They came from Cannan, son of Ham, son of Noah. In 10:19 it says they went as far a Sodom and Gomarah. We all remember what happened to those towns, they were so evil that God zapped them all from heaven. So these women that Esau married must have been evil, too.
I also learned more about the birthright:
~The one who has is it the head of the family
~He also is the priest of the family (this is before Moses where God instilled priests through his brother Aaron)
~In Isaac's family (through Abraham) it means that the one who is the head of the family would also be in the line that would lead to Christ.
My nugget:
Even though Jacob was a pious fraud, God was looking at his potential, and what he would become when he eventually turned his heart over to the Lord. I'm glad that God looks at my potential, and not what I am right now.
It's very cold here again,10* last night, I bet Wendy has received the cold from us. We had a little more snow during the night and this morning...on top of what we got Wed. night and Thur. morning. Probably don't have over an inch or maybe a little more, but we always get ice under the snow here in TN. Brandee knows about this. Not sure I will be able to get to church in the morning. The road is clear, but our driveway is about 1/4 mile long, and half of it is uphill...to the road.

Good Morning, favorite bloggers, oh, how I’ve missed you all this week. Tomorrow I’m looking forward to watching your vlogs sweet Wendy! I know I’m in for a treat and I can’t wait for some quiet time to take them all in! I’ve kept up with the readings and have been lavished over, by my Father. The roller-coaster ride I’ve been on this week has kept me clinging to Him; daily, the Lord has increased my faith. Those of you who journeyed with me last year know how this year I’m seeking to know Him more and this has been my prayer…well, this past week He revealed himself in ways I to me that I did not know before. The suffering was worth it.
A week ago, I had “my plan,” all set in place. (Ladies, we’re good with that, aren’t we!) With the kids going back to school and all, I had lots planned. The beginning of the year is always like that for me. Well, God had a different plan for me this past week. My plan was thrown out the window. He truly showed me that when I seek him all day long, he will not leave me. Daily, he led me to scriptures to hold on to. He showed me that he determines our steps. (Prov. 16:9) We can have a plan, but we need to be ready to follow his steps if we want to be blessed. Each day there was victory and glory to share. When I began to worry he would present me with a verse to cling to. He did not reveal the plan all at once…he allowed me to practice my faith, each step--- so that I would have to trust in him alone to guide me with the daily decisions I needed to make. And, in the end, I love him more.
Something else, reading through the Bible a second time…oh my gosh, it’s EVEN sweeter! Have you all noticed this? It’s a treasured Book. I can’t explain it, but I just want to encourage all of you that are doing it for the first time. Hang in there. Blessings will come. Before you read, ask him to show you personally what he wants you to know. Tell him. Tell him you want to know him more through his Word. It won’t all happen at once. But it will - I promise! He will even council you while you sleep. He wants a personal relationship with each one of us so badly.

PS Much of my time will still be spent over-seeing the care for my mother…yesterday they moved her into a care facility-my first choice, which was God all the way. Each day they told me it was not possible, because it was filled. Each day I turned it over to God. I knew he knew my tomorrows. Everything worked out. She is at the same place my father was at last summer. Really close to my house! She is very frail and weak, but God is in control. God is sovereign. God’s eyes are on her every minute.
My computer time will be lessened, but my prayer time will not be! Know that I’m praying daily for you Wendy, and I’m praying that God will draw each person closer to him. That all of us will grow to know him at a much deeper level throughout this year. I’m praying for the teenager’s too. Don’t be afraid too to ask him how he wants you to pray. I’ve done that, and he keeps showing me more! I love him with all of my heart!

Something old in a new way: I Issac and Rebekah didn't like Esau's wives. I wonder how much influence they had on him.
Something New: King Abimelech. I remembered that Issac had lied about his wife being his sister, I just didn't realize it was to the same King Abimelech that Abraham knew.
Something to do: Be careful not to discard the blessings God gives because we just don't think/realize they are that important.
It is cold but a beautiful sunny day here. A blessing from God that I am going to enjoy by soaking up some sun and son!

El Roi- The One Who Sees- Gen. 16:13 (Pg. 18)- Hagar named God this when she fled from Sarai. The angel of the Lord spoke with her and told her to return and submit to Sarai.
Yahweh Yireh- The Lord Will Provide- Gen. 22:14 (Pg. 26)- Abraham named the Lord this when God provided a ram for sacrafice in place of Isaac.
El Olam- Eternal God- Gen. 21:33 (Pg. 25)- Abraham had just made a treaty with Abimelech and was worshiping God at Beersheba.

Made me think of the phrase, "Like Father, like Son". Wanted to share the notes from my NLT LAB: "Parents help shape the world's future by the way they shape their children's values. The first step toward helping children live right is for the parents to live right. Your actions are often 'copied by those close to you'. What kind of example are you setting for your children?" This was such a great reminder for me! Thank you everyone for your comments. You are teaching me SO MUCH! :)

I think we may have missed one. I barely caught it myself. Look at the bottom of page 17 which says that the Hebrew (El-Elyon) is the translation for "God Most High" in Genesis 14: 19 and 19.

Thank you for those who asked about Abimelech in Abraham's time and Isaac's time. It caused me to dust off my copy of Halley's Bible Handbook.
I would recommend Halley's to anyone who is new to the faith and new to reading the bible. (Amazon has it for less than $12 new, and less than $3 used.) You will learn a LOT! This book is a great resource. It even has archeological evidence. I ended up reading it this afternoon. Where else can you find nuggets like these:
"...Adam's life overlapped Methuselah by 243 years...Noah lived 350 years after Flood; died 2 years before birth of Abraham...Isaac was...75 when Abraham died. 137? when Jacob fled. 157? when Jacob returned. 167 when Joseph was sold. He died at 180 the year that Joseph became the ruler of Egypt." I found that fascinating for some reason - that all these men that we only read about interacted with each other.
All that to say that the Abimelech issue was inconclusive. It could be the same one (if he was a young king during Abraham's time) or another one with the same name.
My takeaway: Parental favoritism does not do anyone good. Matthew Henry's commentary said: Rebekah knew that the blessing was intended for Jacob, and expected he would have it. But she wronged Isaac by putting a cheat on him; she wronged Jacob by tempting him to wickedness. She put a stumbling block in Esau's way and gave him a pretext for hatred to Jacob and to religion. All were to be blamed. It was one of those crooked measures often adopted to further the Divine promises as if the end would justify, or excuse wrong means."
Henry further states: "God overruled the bad actions recorded in this chapter to fulfill His purposes, yet we see His judgment of them, in the painful consequences to all the parties concerned."
It must have been heartbreaking for Rebecca that she never saw Jacob again after he fled. Oh that we would wait and trust God instead of manipulating circumstances to fit what we think is the best. It never ends well.

On to my questions ...
1. I never noticed that Esau claims that Jacob "took" his birthright. It sounds as if he was irresponsible and sold it to me.
3. Related to that, I need to remember, even in the heat of the moment and under duress, to take responsibility for ALL of my actions.
3. Rebekah purposely directed and helped Jacob deceive his father and steal Esau's blessing. She cheated one son and defied her husband. I need to remember that no matter how I feel about my husband's current actions, I should respect his authority and follow his directions. My God should come first, my husband second, and my children third - in that order, even though my children are tiny and need lots of attention. As someone else said, our children emulate our actions, and it's our job to teach them to respect authority.

We moved my bachelor uncle to a long term care facility near my home on Dec.3. My 80 year old mother has been his main caregiver for many years and it had become too stressful for her, so now he is about 175kms. away from her. It is a hard adjustment for Mom.
Well, I am looking forward to warm-up that was forecasted for this weekend. We have had a very cold week,3 days of negative 40*C(that is the point that the F and C scales are equal)and they are predicting +3 by Tuesday. Yahoo!!! I can't wait!

Well, we continue to see infertility; deception; taking matters into our own hands; etc...
the same themes as in earlier readings. Oh the old human sin nature rears its ugly head.
I noticed in 2 spots it said that "Jacob RAGED at Laban" and "Jacob become FURIOUS with Rachel". Looks like an anger problem here. I wonder how difficult Jacob was to live with? Not the warm fuzzy we saw with Abraham and Isaac toward their wives.
To echo what many of you have already said, my takeaway is to
"Let God and Let Go". We mess everything up when we try to do His job.

What stood out to me today was Jacob's dream, but most importantly his reaction to the dream. The fact that the Lord was in that place and Jacob was NOT even aware of it. How often I forget in my daily responsibilities that God is omnipresent. I KNOW he is omnipresent but do I act as if he is with me...through out my day. God wants to be part of my day. He wants me to be in continual communication. God is in this place (everywhere). He is wtih me, protecting me and will not leave me. I pray that I will make Him part of my every moment.

What struck me this morning was all the sisterly fighting and jealousy that was going on in that
household.
I am glad I don't have to live with that constant stress!!
I wasn't too surprised to read that Jacob raged at Laban or that he became furious with Rachel. I also wondered if he felt like a prostitute when Leah said he had to sleep with her because she had paid Rachel for the priviledge.
My something new today was in regards to Esau.
In Gen. 28:6-9, it talks about how he realized that his parents didn't like the local women, so he went to his uncle Ishmael's family to find another wife.
Did he think that because Jacob was sent to an uncle to find a wife, that he could gain his parent's favor, and possibly Isaac's blessing if he also went to an uncle to get a wife?
I like what Rochelle said about Jacob's realization that God was in that place and he hadn't been aware of it. I too am guilty of not being aware of God's presence. In difficult times I have felt so alone and in reality I am never alone.
My nugget for today is from Gen.28:15. God will not leave me. He will protect me wherever I go.

I am loving this time in God's word so much! PTL He placed it on my heart to do this in 2010.
Maybe I'm wrong, but when I read the account of Jacob seeing the ladder, and him rising the next morning... what he said struck me as a requirement. 'If God does do this, then the LORD will certainly be my God...'
It made me think of the times I've heard people say, or I've done it myself--'God, if you'll just... then I will.'
Gen 30:16 I was floored here. She had to 'pay' for a night with her husband. And Jacob did it. What of the second time? Did she pay for that, too? I feel for Leah because she was reduced to 'buying' her husbands affections.
My OLD: Whenever I've come across the passages about Isaac blessing Jacob instead of Esau, and then later in today's reading (Sunday, Day 10) about Jacob first sleeping with Leah, thinking it was Rachel, I'm always baffled at how Isaac and Jacob, respectively, couldn't tell that the person they were dealing with wasn't the right person! I mean, Isaac even noticed that it was Jacob's voice on "Esau's body". I know Isaac was old, but really? Then Jacob with Leah... I know it was dark at night with no electricity in those days, but you'd think you'd know the physical characteristics of the woman you are deeply in love with.. over 7 years waiting. It mentions that Rachel had a beautiful figure, so you'd think Jacob would have been able to tell that by touch, right? I've just always not been able to wrap my head around that, though it was all a part of God's plan, I do realize.
My NEW: I didn't know Rachel was a shepherdess.
I don't have a nugget, but I was curious to know how the number of wives, concubines, sleeping with servants and relatives, etc.. makes sense according to God's rules? Is He ok with it in the beginning, since Abe's line is supposed to populate the earth and that he was promised offspring too numerous to count? Any thoughts on this one?

New: Didn't know that Rachel was a shepherdess. For some reason I thought only men did this.
I also like what God told Jacob when he had the dream Gen: 28:15 What's more, I am with you and i will protect you wherever you go...I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you."
God promised to bring him back to again. Matthew Henry said, "Whom God loves, He never leaves."
Jacob was heading to God's promise but he still had difficulties. Also this gem: "Let us then remember our Bethels, how we stand engaged by solemn vows to yield ourselves to the Lord, to take him for our God, and to devote all we have and are to His glory."
The last is about Rachel's bitter envy of her sister Leah. Again from Henry "Had not Rachel's heart been influenced by evil passions, she would have thought her sister's children nearer to her, and more entitled to her care than Bilbah's. But children whom she had a right to rule, were more desirable to her than children she had more reason to love...See what roots of bitterness, envy and strife are, and what mischief they make among relations."
Thanks, Krista, for asking about the "elephant in the room". I've always wondered how God could reconcile the whole multiple wives/concubines thing. I keep telling myself that He surely didn't approve but knew beforehand what their their choices would be and used them for His purposes.
This may sound weird, but thanks also for not having a nugget. When we were on Day 7, I finished reading and thought, "I didn't get much out of that one." Then first thing on Wendy's vlog, she said, "There was so much today!." Wow, did I feel like I had missed the boat! Why didn't I see any of that?

God does not wish for us to have more than 1 wife/husband...see how much trouble it caused in Jacob's household. All the deception and anger...how could that make for a pleasant atmosphere. Can you imagine living in that kind of stress where you had to fight/buy your right as a wife/husband? Remember He said a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave unto his WIFE...not wives.
Jacob's dream is interpreted in John 1:45-51...I found it interesting.
Last week we read how Abraham's servant went to find Isaac a wife, and how he asked God for a sign. That has bothered me, and I asked our SS teacher this morning about it. He gave me this verse. Matthew 16:1-4, "The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, When evening comes, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red, and in the morning, Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given except the sign of Jonah."
What I take from this is, we must live by faith, and not depend on getting a "sign" from the Lord. He might have given them in the OT, but we are living in the Church age.
I've always wandered what the significance of mandrakes were. I looked it up in one of Wendy's concordance sites. (Thank you for them, Wendy) Here is what I found:

Danielle - I noticed too that Jacob's statement was a conditional one "IF God does do this..." and wrote that in my Bible.
And Krista - I too have wondered about the multiple wives and concubines in Bible stories. It's kind of like the mentioning of slavery in the Bible. I don't believe God promotes either - look at the sin and trouble each causes. But they are mentioned because they both occurred (and still do for that fact). We have to take the Bible as a whole when we read it. Even though slavery and polygamy are described in the Bible neither are okay with God.

Something in a different way: Gen 26:32-36 32 That very day Isaac’s servants came and told him about a new well they had dug. “We’ve found water!” they exclaimed. 33 So Isaac named the well Shibah (which means “oath”). And to this day the town that grew up there is called Beersheba (which means “well of the oath”).
I noticed this time that Abraham also had named a well Beersheba after making an oath with Abimelech (Gen 21:30-31)
A nugget I can apply to my life: Gen 25:32 “Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau. “What good is my birthright to me now?”
Again today Gen 30:1 When Rachel saw that she wasn’t having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”
After making this statement Rachel not only angered Jacob, but ended up taking things in her own hands and giving her maid to Jacob to have a baby. I'm not sure why that made her (and later Leah) think it was giving them a child. I makes me wonder how the maids felt about it.
So what should I do with this? Don't be so eager to appease the flesh. Go to God and wait for his instruction and timing.
Well I am getting this up later than I wanted to but better late than not at all.

Just this week I saw a Proverbs31 status on facebook about this wonderful study. I hurried out to my local Christian bookstore and found the One Year Bible on sale, plus I had a coupon for 30% off - which I just took as confirmation that I should do this. I am in the process of catching up with you all! I really need the accountability to keep 'on task' so I appreciate this blog and this group.
Like many of you I noticed when Jacob said, "IF God does this, and this, and this...then He will certainly be my God"...and I thought to myself "how many times do I do something very similar?"
And the nugget that I take away is the reminder that even when I don't feel His presence, He is there with me and protecting me. How easy it is for me to get wrapped up in my little world and the events of my day. And at days end I will realize that I let myself 'forget' about God's presence. What a comfort to know that He doesn't ever forget me!

I really thought that I knew the first part of the Old Testament as I have started studies in Genesis before, but am finding that things are really clicking together for me! PTL!

Old but new take: I know that stone markers place such a memorial or special place for things..Stonehenge, Headstones, etc. I realized that Jacob also anointed the stone with olive oil which was also designated for special occasions.
New: That Jacob kissed Rachel before even meeting her father. Not very weird to us today, but I always thought that you at least had to be given permission first in these days and ages.
