Wendy, I have to thank you for your teaching today. Until today I never really noticed what Numbers 9:12 said about not breaking the bones of the lamb. I knew that the legs of Jesus were not broken when he hung on the cross. You brought the two Scriptures together in such a beautiful way. It made me stop and think about what I had red. Every time I've read Numbers and Leviticus I've always focussed on all the offerings the Israelites had to give. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's reading because God already reminded me of something relating to the reading for tomorrow.
The day before Ash Wednesday and we are back at the Passover the next year. I am noticing this year more about how the readings are placed during the church year and how they cause me to reflect on the observances.
Foreshadowing: The seven lamps that Aaron lit in Numbers 8:2. They perfectly foreshadow Revelation 4:5 - 5 And from the throne came flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder. And in front of the throne were seven lampstands with burning flames. They are the seven spirits of God.
Jesus; Light of the World "walks among the seven gold lampstands" (Rev. 2:1) and has the "sevenfold Spirit of God" (Rev. 3:1).
My new today: Numbers 9:6-8 some men were made unclean at the time of the Passover and they came to Moses asking what to do as they wanted to observe the Passover with the people of Israel. Moses answered, "Wait here until I have received instructions for you from the LORD" (Numbers 9:8). And the LORD told Moses to have the men celebrate on the same day the next month. This provision preserved the community nature of the observation of Passover and gave people a second chance, without lessening the requirements either for observing the Passover, or for the state of our hearts when we do. We must be clean (pure of heart) and prepared (right of spirit) when we come to the table of God. Jesus also demonstrated this as he washed the feet of the disciples before the last Passover feast.
My application: as I read through the various sacrifices and noted their purpose, I was struck anew. "sin offering" - I must daily acknowledge and repent of my sin
"grain offering"- My prayers and offerings to God must be pure and be my first fruits. No "leaven" or carried over sin; no honey or "artificial sweetener", making things appear better than they are.
"peace offering" - be in communion with others. Share my blessings. Give God the best parts and don't hold any back for myself.

My new take-away today was re: the offerings. They talked about the burnt offering initially. They were able to give depending upon their resources. Some of them did not own herds, so maybe they could offer a lamb, but those that were so poor could offer a pigeon. I thought of Mary and Joseph offering up pigeons and doves(Luke 2:22-24).
Imagine what they went through:
*Individually they had to place their hands on the head of the animal, which symbolized the transfer of sin from the guilty to the sinless perfect animal, to atone for their sin.
*They then killed the animal. Aaron's sons sprinkled the blood upon the alter (1:5).
*Offering the blood to God showed that a life had been given as a substitute for the one who had sinned and who deserved to die.
This act foreshadowed the crucifixion of Jesus Christ; "Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all sin, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:13,14).
Christ is revealed today through the offerings which was made without leaven (symbolic of sin). (Lev. 2:11). Christ was without sin, Heb. 4:15.
I am so, so thankful to be a N.T. Christian with Jesus in my heart.

My nugget today regarded the peace offering. I noticed that female animals were allowed here. Also, they people weren't MAKING peace with God; they were ENJOYING peace with God. I believe the sin offering was making peace. Now they were to enjoy it. And of course, Peace was what Jesus gave us through His perfect sacrifice.

I noticed Numb 8:16 the "Substitute" also. I noticed 9:12 about not leaving any of the lamb until the morning and the broken bones, but didn't make the connection, thank you for that.
My other nugget that I saw was Leviticus 2:3(b)This offering will be considered a most holy part of the special gifts presented to the Lord. Most Holy Special Gifts! Not sure why that popped out but I am sure God will show me.

I am a Catholic, and the communion service is such an important part - probably the ESSENCE, of every Mass. What struck me today was Lev 2:4 - the "recipe" for the grain offering. It seems to be exactly the same one that is used for all communion hosts: "made of choice flour, but without any yeast...presented in the form of thin cakes maxed with olive oil or wafers spread with olive oil." For Catholics, and through transubstantiation (the miraculous change by which according to Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox dogma the eucharistic elements at their consecration become the body and blood of Christ while keeping only the appearances of bread and wine) - the priest transforms the bread into the body of Christ in a recreation of the Last Supper. The thin host wafers are then distributed at communion. Now I see that although when Jesus - at the Last Supper, took the bread, gave it to His disciples, and said... "Take this, all of you, and eat it - for this is my body, which will be given up for you" - it all started HERE. I never made the connection that when Jesus was offering Himself as the "most holy part" of the special gifts presented to the Lord, he was following precisely the Lord's instructions given here in this portion of the Old Testament.

Most was new. As I was thinking about all the explicit instructions the Lord gave the Israelites regarding their offerings - everything was to please the Lord. He loves it when we serve him and offer Him our best - it is pleasing to Him.
Something New:
Numbers 8:6 - "Place them so their light shines forward."
Really liked how Moses handled the mna who was ceremonially unclean. When he went to ask Moses if he could still participate, Moses said "Wait here until I have received instructions for you from the Lord." I love how he consulted God first before he answered the man. How many times do I just speak or do without waiting on the Lord's answer!
Nugget:
Give God my best - the first of what I have "no defects - choice flour." Repent when I am unclean - letting God's light shine forward!

Nu. 8:15 Once the Levites were purified and the sacrifice requirements were met they didn't have to do them over and over again to come in and out of the Tabernacle to do their work. I saw this as a foreshadowing of Christ. His pure sacrifice was made so that we are allowed to go in and out of the presence of the LORD and to do our work for Him w/o having to offer a sacrifice again and again. Christ is enough.

Are you reading the Chronological Bible in a year? This was one of the verses I rea today as well.
This made me think about offerings, and the times in life when I've committed a wrong and how I've tried to offer something up to make it right. I can make most things right by apologizing or correcting my actions, but I cannot myself right myself with God for my sinds...without Jesus. Jesus is the reason I am right with God, why I can be human and still be loved and cherished, and the reason I thank Him every day for loving me no matter what.

Good Morning Everyone,
I can not get the video to play right now so I am going to try again later. Will you all please say a prayer for my Will? He got up today worse than he has been the past week with this virus or whatever he has. He is now running fever so I am taking him back into the doctor here in about 30 minutes. He got up really early today so I had some time to dig about the salt that was used in the sacrifices. I will share later when he naps. It taught me alot about us being salt of the earth, I never really understood very well what that meant till today.

The seven lamp stands were mentioned back in EX25:37. I love how God's word all fits together like a beautiful puzzle. I thought it was interesting that the light had to be directed in front of the lamp stand. I read that the light represented the glory of the Lord. He is our salvation in this troubled world. And reading God’s Word is our light that guides us. I am learning so much with this study!

Your main point today, Wendy proved that to be correct. God has been so good this year to open up His Word to me like no other. He led me to this blog, to Koinonia - amazing.
I found a lot of nuggets in Jon Courson's commentary regarding the symbolism of the offering. I am just going to list them because - well, they're so good!
*The book of Leviticus portrays the sacrifice of Christ.
*Purpose of the 1st offering (burnt) was to consecrate or dedicate one's self. It's voluntary. Just as the offering is voluntary, Jesus laid down His life willingly.
*Lev 1:7 "...lay the wood..." signifies the wooden cross for Jesus.
*Lev 1:8 fat = excess
*Lev 1:9a inwards = purity
*Lev 1:9b legs = speak of one's walk, one's lifestyle
*The burnt offering speaks of giving all that we are to the Lord.
*Lev 1:10 "The ox spoke of Jesus Christ, the Strong One, able to bear our burdens, to pull us out of sn. The lamb portrayed Jesus as the Perfect One who came to take away our sin. The goat represented Jesus as the Rejected One who, for us, became sin.
*Lev 1:11 "...on the side of the alter northward..." I wondered why that was important that they face north. Courson's answer: "The lamb or goat was to be killed on the altar northward, which speaks of the ultimate altar - the Cross of Calvary - located north of the city of Jerusalem."
That's just for the burnt offering - 11 verses. There's a whole lot more.

Wendy, what a beautiful connection to Jesus. After I viewed your vlog today I went back and "saw" all the references to our Savior, something I surely missed.
Meredith, I really liked your nugget concerning Moses' answer to the unclean man. I was struck with how often I just go ahead instead of waiting on the Lord's response. I am in one of those waiting periods right now, I'm praying that my conviction is strong enough to wait for the Lord's answer.
My take away today was how special these offerings were to God. And how pleasing the aroma was. I'm reminded that even my smallest offering is a special gift when I give it up to God.
My new was from 2:13 "Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of God's eternal covenant." According to the commentaries, salt also spoke of friendship. And according to ancient custom, a bond of friendship was established through the eating of salt. It was said that once you had eaten a man’s salt, you were his friend for life. God wanted every sacrifice to be a reminder of relationship.

The only thing I can add is that each time the words "with no defect" were used when talking about sacrafice, my heart jumped! I am not sure if it was a good jump or bad. I think it is the fact of Claire having a birth "defect" that I am now sensitive to these words.
I know that my life was very selfish until I had Claire. Now, I walk so closely with God daily,otherwise I would drown in fear of so many things that are now in our walk.

Here is a small tidbit on salt as a preservative from Lessin: "Our homes, our work place, our marriages, our friendships, and our churches all need the preserving power of the Holy Spirit working through us. As the salt of the earth we help to keep people from being injured, marriages from being destroyed, businesses from becoming corrupted, and ministries from being overtaken by death and decay. As the salt of the earth we help to keep things sound and secure; healthy and protected; prosperous and blessed. Note…Salt will always be salt. It will always do what salt does. You do not need to strive to become salt. Jesus is the one who has made us salt. Without His life in us and His words on our tongues we have no saltiness. "

The part about "not breaking any bones" struck me anew today as I listened to your teaching. I am so encouraged by how the Bible is truly such a love letter to us in so many ways, one of which is God's plan for us through the plan for His son. I love how He points us to the cross throughout the Old Testament and that He is so deliberate in the events of history.

I have tried reading through the bible several times before but never completed it...sadly I usually only lasted about a month. But this is unlike any other bible study I've done in the past. Thank you everyone for the prayers for Will. Back from the doctor and he thinks he is basically going through a "getting worse to getting better" stage. He will be home from school a few more days and just taking one day at a time. Hot showers and lots of liquids are what he said on top of the medicine he is already on.
Tina, I tried to go to your website and it took me to a log in page. Do I need to become a member to see Claire's page? I have days I just skim the notes and I must have missed her story. I wanted to read so I can be praying. Some days I just have more time than others :)
Some of you have already commented on what I found out about the salt and how it was a symbol of friendship. I read that in Matthew Henry's commentary. I also read Adam Clarke's this morning and I found something that jumped out at me. Clark says that salt is the opposite to leaven. It preserved from putrefaction and corruption, it signified purity. As salt we are to preserve the world from putrefaction and destruction. In the land of Judea there was a Valley of Salt. In this valley there are areas that were exposed to rain, sun and air. Though there were sparks and particles of salt, it had lost it's savor. Only the inner part that was connected to the rock retained its savor. Clarke writes, "A Christian who has lost the life of Christ, and the witness of His Spirit, out of his soul, may be likened to this salt. He may have the sparks and glittering particles of true wisdom, but without it's comfort. Only that which is connect with the Rock, the soul that is in union with Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit, can preserve it's savor, and be instrumental of good to others." Christianity is the salt of the earth but is we loose our saltiness, if we are not connected to The Rock and let the elements of the world make us loose our savor, then we are not preserving any longer. We are no longer bringing good to our surroundings. I just think it interesting that the elements can make the salt loose it's saltiness just as Jesus said in Matthew 5:13, but as long as we stay connected to Him we preserve and are used for good to others. Henry made the point that we are now living sacrifices to God, all sacrifices must be seasoned with salt as we learn here in Leviticus. I want to stay connected to the Rock!

It just made me think that I need to be patient in waiting for answers or guidance from the Lord- sometimes it might take a while, but eventually I will receive His guidance- Sometimes I just have to wait wherever I am at that moment. It reminded me of what they teach you to do if you are lost- stay where you are and wait for help to come to you- don't set out determined to find your own way out of being lost- remain where you are.

Many of you have already talked about the things that stood out to me today. I think this is the only thing that hasn't been mentioned in this exact way before. Moses told the unclean men to wait while he went to ask God how they should celebrate Passover. To just WAIT. Surely he didn't leave them standing there for weeks, so it must have been a relatively short amount of time. How fabulous it must have been to know that he could walk to a place where he could meet with God personally, immediately, at any time! Isn't it even better, now, that we DON't EVEN HAVE TO GO ANYWHERE? Sometimes I forgot that - I forget that He's always there, always listening, always has time for me. I need to be more intentional about including Him in EVERY part of my day.

Dear Wendy and all of you wonderful Women of Faith at Proverbs 31 Ministries. I have to tell you that I have felt lost in the dessert for the last 8 years, esp, the last 6 since we lost our oldest daughter to cancer, just one day after her 8th birthday, on top of that, we have had so much loss these last few years: my dear FIL, my Sweet SIL, our precious daughter, and recently my father to cancer, it is easy to doubt the path we have been on, to doubt ourselves, each other, HIS Will for all of us, but I truly feel the healing beginning in my heart with HIS Words that you are all teaching me and bringing me to in HIS perfect timing. I am so looking forward to SEEING where God is leading us, as I truly feel HIS hand on me since feeling lead to all of you.

Wendy what a great message today! Numbers 9:12 jumped out at me. Also, that the offerings had to be an animal with no defect just like Jesus was an offering with no defect - perfect! Thank goodness we don't have to do sacrifices. It just amazes me that Jesus gave Himself for me-knew me by name- knew the kind of person I would be and He still loved me enough to die for me! Praise His name. Thanks again Wendy- I loved reading the Bible through with everyone.
Thank You again Wendy for this study. I usually do my bible study in the afternoon and there is no way to be able to read everyone comments. The verses that stuck out to me were:It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord stated 4 times. Also Wait here until i have received instructions from the Lord, I loved that also.

Thank you again Wendy! I finished my lesson today, set back in my chair and glanced at my bible. My bible has always looked brand new, and not easy said, but not read. I now see my bible, that I bought for this journey, becoming used!! There are some days I just don't want to stop reading! What an awesome site. I am learning so much from everyone. I may not post many nuggets but believe me, each day I am taking away so much. God is doing great things!

I broke my broadband connector, so I am doing this from a coffee shop - a little difficult to concentrate, but I'm doing my best, will probably have to come back and read the comments later.
Something old/new:
I really loved today's reading, I loved that the laying on of hands was repeated in the offering/blessing of the Levites as well as the sacrifices. I think there is something very significant about that gesture and the power of touch, of us being able to be the hands of God. But also a compassionate gesture, the power of touch is amazing. He created us that way, and I love that he includes that in the comfort of being redeemed.
My something new (one of them): There was a second passover! I didn't know that. AND that the people that were unable to participate in the second one, or were ceremonially unclean, were allowed to make up for it and have another passover.
To Do:
Never forget God's grace and mercy, even in the Old Testament, he would reformat his laws and stipulations so that all of his children could participate in Passover. Also, and again, to listen and obey his callings.
Ahhh, there is so much more I want to write about, guess this is why I have a journal ;)

Old/New/Borrowed/Blue...this is a part of my daily mantra as I am planning to be wed on April 17, 2010. And although I am not into astrologicals, I am a Libra and certainly emody many of the associated character traits. Nevertheless, balance is but a blemish in my life these days. But seeing an addition to my mantra - DO - might just tip the scales.
