In today's reading my eyes parked at Ex. 31:3 also. Yes, the instructions for building the tabernacle are exact but God filled Bezaleel with His Spirit, wisdom, knowledge and workmanship "in all kinds of crafts." I dabble in cardmaking, scrapbooking, and all sorts of craft-y things, so this verse is near and dear to my heart. I pray that God will use my talent (and my supplies - please God, use up my supplies) for His Kingdom. Last year I used my cricut machine (Brandee, you'd know what I'm talking about :) to make little things for our missionaries during the Easter campaign.
New to me: The part about putting blood in the right ear, thumb and foot confused me. So I looked up some commentaries. Since my Jon Courson book came from Amazon today, I'm going to use his analysis (also his is the easiest to understand): "As Aaron and his sons stood in this ordination ceremony, blood was put on their right ears, their right thumbs, their right big toes. Why? People often feel as though they've heard things they shouldn't have listened to, done things they shouldn't have been involved in, walked in places they ought not to have gone. Therefore, the blood was applied to the ear, to the thumb to the toe to signify that our shortcomings in what we've heard, what we've done, where we've walked are ALL COVERED, CLEANSED, FORGIVEN because of the blood."
Courson also added, "Nothing was done by Aaron and his sons in this ordination ceremony. Rather, everything was done for them. We tend to think, I must do this or I must do that - but this illustration shows us very clearly that it's not what we do that matters, but what JESUS has done for us.

Thank you Wendy, Karen, Grace & Peace, Lori and the many, many others who are being persistent in struggling to understand God's word in Exodus while I, and no doubt others, are struggling. I feel as if you ladies are clinging tightly to my hand as I "sink" in these readings. Your faith is strong and powerful, and I'm very grateful you are sharing your faith with me through this wonderful on-line study.
The current readings unfortunately remind me of the overly ritualistic religious ceremonies and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic faith into which I was born. I prefer a simple, direct-to-God kind of faith. I was also discouraged when I peeked ahead and saw how much more of Exodus we have to go. Exodus combined with the loooooong winter in New England (we're expecting about a foot of snow today) is a daunting prospect. (Big sigh here.)
I know DISCOURAGEMENT is Satan's most valuable tool, so I am ever watchful when I feel this way. I DO NOT want Satan to mess up my commitment to myself and the Lord to read his Holy Word in 2010. I'm with you, Wendy :)

I agree with everyone it's a little more challenging to find nuggets in these readings, but look at the skills we are learning, that will come in handy when we get to familiar scriptures. When we are tempted to pull out the obvious we will have learned how to dig deeper.
My nugget is 31:3 also. and for the same reasons as Grace and Peace. I am a crafter of all sorts of things and reminded today that I could not do any of it with out the gifting from God. Nice reminder that without Him I can do nothing but with Him I can do all things. (smile)
Wendy thanks for the reminder and insight that our bodies are His temple. When we read how specific God was in the building of the Temple and how sacred He expected it to be, it gives a whole new level of importance of taking care of this body he gave me.

I agree with everyone it is more challenging and honestly, I skipped alot of it last year so I am really trying to dig in this year and read it all the way through.
Grace and Peace, oh yes, I know all about the cricut and used mine for a while yesterday :) I had some requests to see some of my pages I am working on for Will's Kindergarten scrapbook so I will post some pics on my blog soon of them. I love how God gives us these abilities and creative minds to be used for Him and for those around us.
This morning as I was reading God drew me to the section in Exodus 30:17-21 where He was describing the washbasin and how the priests were to wash themselves before appearing before the Lord. When we come to the Lord in prayer, we must also do the same. We "enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise" (Psalm 100:4) and then it is so important to confess and repent. To wash ourselves of all the sin that is in our hearts. It is something that we must do daily as we go to Him in prayer. Psalm 66:18 says that if we cherish sin in our hearts our prayers will not be heard. We have to daily confess and let Him fill us and then go before Him with our requests and petitions, our intercession. I think this is such an important thing guys, we have to have right hearts if we want God to hear our prayers. I know we are a group on our knees this year, let's get ourselves right with God and let God move the mountains and open the windows of heaven to the blessings He wants to pour out!

Good Morning All,
I took away from the scriptures today that the burnt offerings, done God's way, were pleasing to Him and considered holy, a special gift, a pleasing aroma. Oh that our offerings would be pleasing unto the Lord in a similar way and given with such reverence.
The ear, thumb, and toe was enlightening Grace and Peace. Thanks.
We know the Lord did things for a reason, making significant all these objects in the tabernacle.I'm glad they can be tied to our current worship in communion, baptism, Holy Spirit.

I'm writing for my husband who is also reading through the Bible this year. He had questions about how we obey the commandments in that it seems we sometimes obey part of them and skim over other parts - as in keeping the sabbath. We cook on Sundays instead of preparing ahead on Saturdays. He gave a lot of rules to the children of Israel when He gave the commandments. How do these rules apply to us today? We pick the 10 commandments to obey, and forget about these other 'rules'.

Wednesday, -already! Another week is flying by! Wendy, THANKS! I just cannot say this enough, ya know! Each morning I’ve been starting out my quiet time, by repeating the words from a song on my ipod: “Word of God Speak.” I know this area in the Bible is tough! When we ask Him to show us what He wants us to “know,” He does. I’ve been praying too that He would give you all, lots of nuggets to bless me with! And, boy or boy, IS He! Thank you, to each of you! I love your comments. I’ve gotten into the habit of asking Him about stuff that does not make sense to me. I have a little heart-to-heart discussion with Him. “Lord, I don’t get this. What do you mean by this? I know it is important to You, because I see it repeating itself in Your Word, but, I don’t fully grasp it.” Sometimes, 6 months later an “answer,” will come. It’s during those moments that you “feel,” His presence, like what you were talking about Wendy. I will agree, it’s glorious. As we come near to God by reading His Word, everyday, his Spirit does speak to us. We gotta hang in there girls, we’re in this for the LONG haul! Smile! These particular sections that seem so particularly difficult do give me hope. I realize the more we “know” Him the more we will understand His Word to us! Year after year he unveils His secrets to us as we grow closer and closer to Him. I love that! It’s kinda like the more we believe Him and trust in Him, the more He shows us. He does not want us to understand it all at once, but little by little He allows us to grasp it. Really, He’s just the MOST awesome teacher! He gives it to us in little doses and allows us to take it in, bit-by-bit. Day-by-day He draws us back to Him as He so lovingly pursues us. And, He has so graciously brought all of us together, that I truly believe He is giving us LOTS of nuggets each day, through each other. Thank you, LORD! Okay, I’ve managed to not answer ANY questions, so I’m going to post this because I can tell it’s getting scarily (is that a word!) long, and I’ll pop back in with my comments. Thank you for putting up with me dear sisters! And, if there are any bro. reading along today, I KNOW you don’t get it! (I mean, how girls can go on and on and not even get to the question!) Regarding the question from my husband regardin the 'rules' God gave the Israelites - he wanted me to write and tell you he received the answer. Found totally in the New Testament. We don't live under the law anymore but under GRACE. It's all about Jesus and what He has already done.

Good Morning FIGs! Sometimes I find it hard to comment when you all have hit on already what I was drawn to.
But... I love order and so rituals. However, going through the rituals is not worship; worship is having a genuine spirit towards God.
Thought on the ear, toe, and thumb... we are to listen to God (ears), and then to do His will (hands and feet).
I was also drawn to the several mentions of "a pleasing aroma" of the sacrifice (29:25,41). Our offering to God should be a pleasing aroma, again it should be given with a genuine spirit, not because we feel we have to do it.
Last, the Lord has called me on a journey allowing me to work toward a long-held dream. Like 31:3, He is giving me the skills, ability and knowledge necessary, but never before I need it. As I ferret out the nugget of this study each day, I do the same in the research I am currently undertaking to obtain my doctorate. The Lord is so good! Blessed be His name!

What I noted was the census being taken and then a ransom being paid. It reminded me of the movie "Martin Luther" with Joseph Fiennes starring in it. Martin Luther so objected to this ransom - coming to understand fully that Jesus already had ransomed us by that time. Yay Jesus is my take-away!
To anonymous'husband: I hear ya. The only answer I have is again: Yay for Jesus - because we can never do good enough or be good enough, He did it for us. We obey God because of our love for Him and not to be just following rules. I could try until I was blue in the face and never accomplish what Jesus already has.

Old...Aaron and his sons were dedicated to God by the blood on their right ear, right thumb and right big toe to show they were dedicating their whole selves to the service of God
New...The ceremony for dedicating the priests was to show that they were set apart--not of themselves but by God...just as we are a chosen (1 Peter 2:9) people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light.
Nugget...Praise God that Jesus is now the sacrificial offering for me...Thank you Jesus...

My old: Exod 29 - the dedication of Aaron and his sons. Detailed intructions for consecrating them (setting them apart/making them holy)during the 7 day ordination ceremony. v45 daily sacrifices needed to make them "right with the LORD."
My new: Hadn't noticed before that in Exod 29:38-42 "These are the sacrifices you are to offer regularly on the altar. Each day, offer two lambs that are 1 year old, one in the morning and the other in the evening....These burnt offerings are to be made each day from generation to generation." Did they sacrifice 2 lambs everyday until the coming of Christ -our Passover Lamb?
Also in Exod 30:22-38... noticed that myrrh was in the anointing oil and frankincense was in the incense....two of the gifts the Magi brought to Jesus.
To do: Do a better job of remembering my body is God's temple ...keeping in mind what I hear, what I do and where I go (ear, thumb, and toe) Thank you for the commentary G&P!
Exod 31:16-17 convicted me..."This (the Sabbath) is a covenant obligation for all time. It is a permanent sign of my covenant with the people of Israel." The Sabbath is a gift to us from God ...and it is an obligation for us to keep it holy.
Question..I don't own a commentary..many of you have mentioned Matthew Henry and Jon Courson. Can you recommend one for me...which commentary do you go to most often and is the easiest to understand?

My nugget is from the very end of our reading today. There is another reason God gives for keeping the Sabbath holy in Ex. 31:13 besides rest. God explains to Moses that the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between God and his people. He explains that it helps the Israelites to remember that God is the Lord who makes them holy. I thought of all of the distractions of the culture back then (and now is no different); there were so many other gods to worship, they had all of the same futile pursuits they could chase after as we do- riches, fame, power etc. But the Lord tells Moses I make you holy. In the new testament somewhere Jesus says "Be Holy just as I am Holy." This shows me that I need to be focused on God not only as my rest but also because He makes me holy; I cannot be holy on my own. I need the Sabbath to be a constant reminder so that I can choose to please Him and choose not to sin and be Holy unto the Lord.
Also, I didn't understand why the blood and guts as a burnt offering was a pleasant aroma to God? Sacrificing animals makes me think of innocents subjected to pain, fear and death. Yet the more I thought about it as I've been typing this, combined with what I have studied in the past in the Bible, I've put this together as an answer:since the penalty for sin is death, God must have received the smell of the sacrifice as evidence that the people wanted to be right with Him which is was what He wanted the most. Therefore, the sacrifices the priests offered morning and night were a constant reminder to God that the people were trying to be right with Him and this pleased Him. The thought of the amount of sacrifices they did back then and all it entailed still is yucky to me. But it makes me all the more thankful God gave His Son Jesus as our sacrifice, our Redeemer, once for all who believe on the Lord Jesus! Halleluia!
Back again to actually get to the questions! So many exact details were given to complete this extraordinarily task of completing the Tabernacle. It makes me think more about God and how He is also concerned with each and every detail of our life. He knows what we are and what we are NOT capable of doing. And, sometimes He specifically gives us tasks to do because He knows that we can not do them on our own, that we have to lean on Him in order to complete them.
Today, they mention the anointing oil which to me is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. It was rare in the O.T. for someone to be empowered with the Spirit. Maybe a handful of people were blessed this way. God’s faithful follower’s (Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Samson, Saul, David). They were touched by the Holy Spirit’s presence for a period of time. Fewer, tho had the special privilege of having the Holy Spirit remain with them! New to me: I noticed that dear Bezalel, was one to receive the Spirit who was NOT a leader or a prophet, he was just an ordinary man, set apart by God to do a HUGE job. God granted him His Spirit to empower him for the task for which he was anointed to do. God filled Bezalel (Exodus 31:1) “with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.” Wow, he was empowered by the Holy Spirit to construct the Tabernacle! Just like today, when He gives us a job to do, He will equip us for the job.
New to me this year: This anointing is symbolic of the indwelling Holy Spirit who allows us to serve the Lord.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel” (Luke 4:18).

Matthew Henry lived around the 17th century. His commentaries reflect that - the prose is beautiful but I have to read it slowly to understand.
Jon Courson is still alive. He is one of the pastors of the Calvary Chapel movement (teaching the bible verse by verse). His books are available at his website www.joncourson.com. I also just found this audio commentary here:

I found Jon Coursons website and sermons where he speaks to every verse in the Bible. When I find my mind wandering during the current readings I go and listen to him speak on the ten commandments, one by one. He has the ability to make them relevent for me and something else to ponder. They are long - 45 minutes or so, but well worth the time!
Also, I am using my time to explore all the things I wanted to know more about - Mt. Sinai and such. Last night I got into the Jewish Kosher laws, and now realize that the animals that were (and are) sacrificed were done so quickly and with as little pain as possible. Up until this time I have been grossed out too but this eases the thought somewhat. I do continue with the daily readings - thanks to Wendy and all of you for helping me do this!

I was without internet yesterday and ny heart ached without the daily study. I'm trying to make up both readings today, wow this is tough.
Wendy thanks especially today for your special insights that were hidden to me.
I did take away from today's reading a couple of things. I liked the reference to the specific spices that were to be mixed together with the olive oil and the visual of all the anointing that was to take place. As I saw in my mind's eye the incense rising it looked like liquid prayer rising to the Lord.
And my second take away was...For God to make another reference to keeping the Sabbath day holy I thought why hasn't this carried over to the New Covenant and then in reading a few commentaries was taken to Romans 14:5 "Some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whatever day you choose is acceptable."
The day is getting away from me and I am so thankful that I was able to join you all in the reading and comments today.

thank you so much for all of your time...I'm enjoying every day of it.
I was re-assured to see that God does gives second changes and that His Plan always trumps any mistake we may make. Aaron had fashioned the golden calf for the people to worship, then proceeded to blame them to Moses who came to him because he was left in charge as Moses went up to the mountain. Now to see him and his sons consecrated to be the priesthood for his people...I wonder what was going through his mind during each of the ceremonies.
I have various skills and talents that seem odd to me and I constantly ask God why I'm wired this way...because they come so easily to me. I'm always reminded that He's the one who fashioned me this way and so it is my responsibility take care of my Tabernacle...harder on some days than others, but trying :)

Wendy, I didn't even think about translating it into our bodies being OUR temples and how we should regard them as holy property of God. Good reminder and food for thought.
Something old/new:
Really the only thing that was familiar in today's reading was to keep the Sabbath, but hearing God speak about it brought a whole new meaning to that! 31:13 grabbed me (and became the title of todays entry in my journal) "...that you may know that I am the Lord who makes you holy." We are created by Him to worship and glorify him, and we kinda suck at that most of the time, but he gives us a whole day to do that.
I like Anonymous' husband's point about how we obey the rules and commandments that are convenient or easy for us. I have been feeling convicted to show more respect for the Sabbath for the past few months, and have been trying to adhere to the command, but I need to go beyond TRYING and just DO it. Notice how it says in vs 17 that God "STOPPED working and was refreshed" it doesn't say he rested because he finished all his work in 6 days. This is enlightening! We can spare ONE day to rest with God and revel in his covenant to us. ONE DAY! It picks back up the next day, but seriously folks, he's giving us a day off, and I'm gonna take it!
Something New:
I didn't realize how detailed God was with his instructions. That they had to be followed in order to make it holy, and that these tasks were ONLY for the Tabernacle, again making it one-of-a-kind holy.
Also am with you guys on 31:3 where God filled Bezalel with his Spirit giving him great wisdom, ability and expertise in all kinds of crafts. If we are doing God's work, He will give us everything we need - not just tangibly, but in wisdom and SKILL! That's amazing! Like, if God decided I was going to glorify him by being a BMX biker, He'd just empower me with that skill! Interesting perspective on chasing dreams, and going to college, figuring out what YOU want to be when you grow up. Again, this says to me, "be still and know that I am GOD." I will listen for your call God.

Well both of the above are pretty good ones. I will listen, obey and let God work through me. I will also keep the Sabbath holy and remember that it is God's covenant with us. That if we give that day to Him, he will bless our work in the other 6.

1. Ex. 29:9b This just shows us another reason why geneology is important! God uses our family to gift us and/or to teach us things. Are there still people out there who claim to be of Aaron's priestly line?
2. Ex 29:45-46 These verses stuck out to me, too, Wendy, but I didn't have any deep thoughts, just ... that I want Him to come and live with me, too. What an awesome promise that God made to the Israelites!
3. Ex. 30:21 Isn't this funny how God takes care of the most minute details? We may not HAVE to follow all of these rules anymore, but this is a good one. Handwashing is very important!

Two things that stuck out to me:

God is the gift-giver, everything man has the capability to do comes from Him... an expert scientist mind (even if the scientist is a non-believer), the thinkers/great minds of this world, the artists, crafters, all of their abilities and gifts source back to the Creator.. just look at the Creator's universe, such wisdom and perfection beyond the human mind's capacity to understand.
Exodus 31:18 "When the Lord finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, written by the finger of God"... wow, written by the finger of God? I wonder if only Moses could read it, or if God wrote all the details in Hebrew... just some tiny details that "wow" me.

When I read, Exodus 29:18, and 29:41, "...it is a pleasing aroma, a special gift presented to the Lord", I thought about how I want my life to be a pleasing aroma that I present to the Lord.
Wendy, I loved what you said about the Lord's glorious presence dwelling in us.

Wow!!! I don't think that any of us should feel that we are struggling about anything anymore BECAUSE it is such a blessing to each of us to learn from Wendy and from each other. By this time, we should just figure that this is all a part of God's plan...that we trust His Word and His people, and HE will give the understanding. However, not feeling inferior...just inadequate...I am so grateful that so many of you have such a tremendous knowledge and understanding of God's Word. I am in awe of you. I am just going to be believing and trusting God to bless me and teach me through your wisdom of His Word. I copy AT LEAST 5 pages in my notebook of what I find, what Wendy teaches, and then what each of you say that I relate with or love!!!! I am not a great comprehender, so I write it all out; then it sticks!!!!:)

Brandee: I loved what you shared about our prayer life. I fail to do that confessing on a daily basis. You encouraged me also about the temple needing execise. ;)
Lori: Bless your heart; you and I must be a lot alike, but I don't have your knowledge. I love when you just write from your heart because that is what I do too. I think it is wonderful that we can pour our hearts out, at times, to people who are in the same spirit of learning and growing in the Lord. I have posted my heart a couple of times, but it's usually the last post ;) and probably no one reads it, but it is a blessing to me "to get it out." When I first began, I didn't even know how to post a comment. God has been so gooooood to me.!!!!

Gaylene & Morgen: I especially liked what you said about the rituals. In retrospect, there was a time when I "followed rules" that were unfamiliar to me because, obviously, I have realized that I truly didn't love Him---there was no relationship. Thank God for NOW!!!!
Cindy: I learned from you also today...loved what you wrote about the Sabbath (and the blood &guts).
Debbie: I am always drawn to verses that make reference to the aroma and the anointing.
My to do or nugget: I praise God for all that He is doing in this study so that my temple, from head (learning, absorbing His Word)
to toe (watching where I go and prayfully going where He leads)will be a dwelling place for His Glorious Presence, as Wendy stated.

I know that these things were God's commandments and the rituals and offerings he demanded since Jesus hadn't come yet. But it is hard reading for me. Thank heavens we were given Jesus as our sacrifice!!!! I will try to get through this part but I have to say, it is hard for me.
THank you Wendy for helping me get my nugget of truth for this reading, sometimes I lose the true meaning of what God is trying to tell me in His word but through your discussion of the reading I have been reminded of how He is a True living God that His Spirit dwells in me. I am responsible to take care of my tabarnacle where His spirit dwells in me. Thank God we serve a Living GOd whose promise are true and forever. Amen!
