I love today's key verse. This is the scripture I recite while on flight, white-knuckling the armrests of my seat when I take-off and land. I can't stand to fly. It was one of my biggest fears. Over time I have learned how to deal with this mode of travel and this is how-scripture.
I found it interesting in the of study Psalm 91 that in the KJV live is translated as dwelleth and rest as abide. These words though they sound similar (dwelleth and rest) have different meanings. I loved the meaning of abide. (KJV) It means to lodge, stop over, or pass the night. The word also means grumble, complain or murmur. Isn't this great? Could it be that we have permission to complain? Getting things "off our chest" could definitely lead to rest. How glorious!
Dwelleth, I will admit is a stretch. The Hebrew word is mishkan. Verse 1 was not in the list of referenced verses when I researched the word but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. I liked the idea.
The word means dwelling place, tabernacle. Dictionary.com defines tabernacle as any place of worship. I love the idea of having tabernacle with the Lord. Don't you? Talk about safety and rest. Worshiping the Almighty would certainly help you find rest because it would enable you to take your mind of all your trouble. Again-this is not supported by the Lexicons I use, I am merely suggesting the idea. I want to keep looking for that connection.
The psalmist who wrote 91 is unknown. Some speculate it was Moses because he is the author of Psalm 90. Even though we don't know the name of the author, we do know that He knew the Lord in an intimate way. He spoke personally referring to the Lord as my refuge, my place of safety and my God. He quickly encourages us to know his god in the same way. In verses 3, 4, and 10-13 by telling us what we can expect from God when we live in His shelter and rest in the shadow of His wings.
The Lord says some pretty incredible things to us through the pen of the this Psalmist. We can count on the Lord:
- To rescue those He loves
- To protect those who trust in His name (I love that. Not in His power but His name.)
- To answer when He is called
- To be there for us in times of trouble
- To rescue and honor us
- To reward us with a long life
- To give us salvation

Through the storm our family is enduring, we are trusting that God IS our refuge. AND...so grateful us His faithfulness through it all:)

Like Cindy said, our family also is experiencing God in new ways as we look to Him as our refuge.
To rescue and honour us. Rescue is one thing, but then to be shown respect and recognition...WOW! We certainly can never out-give God. And, the more we trust Him, the more we experience Him. Reminds me of the list in Henry Blackaby's book, "Experiencing God". There are so many benefits available to those who take refuge in the shelter of the Almighty and trust in His name.
Today the verse that thrilled my heart was, "O Lord, you alone are my hope. I've trusted you, O LORD, from childhood. Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother's womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you!" Psalm 71:5-6
Without making this comment too much longer, the story surrounding my birth is nothing short of a miracle. To hit the highlights of what I wrote about today, I was born at 25 weeks and never expected to live. God truly has cared for me from my mother's womb and I will forever be thankful for the gift of life He gave and the prayers of many He answered. "No wonder I am always praising You!"

Good Morning, Wendy. I am thankful for your faithfullness to our group. It's good to know that when I get up for my quiet time with God, reading His word and speaking to Him in prayer, I also have someone (a group of someone's actually) to share it with.
The Psalm's really spoke to me this morning. Psalms of encouragement and praise...Psalm 33 and 91 quickly became a favorite. I love how you expanded on Psalm 91:1.
Today is my first day back to work from 2 weeks of vacation (I have a few more days scheduled here and there). It warmed my heart this morning to read of His love and goodness...His promise to be a shelter, a protection from the world we live in while we dwell in His shadow. It is difficult to work amongst non-Christian people yet I need to realize that I am constantly and consistently in "the shadow of the Almighty". That really a powerful thought!

We begin reading with,(Psalm 1) two men-two ways-two destinies. Which one? My desire is to be Godly. (vs.6)I want to spend my time delighting in God's Word, meditating on it day and night.(vs.2)
Then, we end our reading with Psalm 91,
Amazing Promises of Blessings...
This is a wonderful Psalm [91] dear sister’s! We are guaranteed that when we live in the shelter of the Most High, we will find rest in His shadow! That is where I want to be; nestled up close, covered with his feathers, and sheltered with his wings. (91:4) clinging to my Father! The Lord is our safety. His is our God. We trust in Him. (91:1 & 2) Many times during our life we need a safe place to hang out. Many of my friends right now are going through their own trials and sufferings. I know a dear friend who suffers from such pain that without clinging to God she could become very bitter. Another friend’s husband was let go (assoc. pastor of their home church!) Still another suffers from her son’s mental uncertainties. People today are suffering in some way or another. As a follower of Christ we know that we have a refuge and fortress; a safe place that we can rest - in the shadow of our Almighty. We also need to remember that the enemy-the devil- is seeking to devour us! We have the Power living inside us; (WE CAN CALL OUT HIS NAME!)but, on the other hand we have the influences of the world pulling us in the other direction. Our confidence can not be in our flesh. We put our trust in the Word of God. We have no word of the Lord’s protection if we choose to rely on our “self,” But, what is there to fear when we remain in God’s Presence? “For he will order his angels to protect [us] wherever [we] go.” Psalm 91:11. Thank you, dear Father for taking care of my every moment of every day.

Sorry, but I just had to pop right back in...I loved so many of the verses today, but one of them is just really hitting me.
Psalm 33:11 -
"But the LORD's plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken." God "intentionally" plans and carries out every detail in our life! Whatever is apart of His Plan for us, He has "intentionally" orchestrated it. His plans for us will not be shaken. They will not be upset. They will not be overcome. They will not be disturbed. "He made [our] hearts, so he understands everything [we] do." (vs. 15)
Dear Lord, My heart rejoices in You. I put my trust in your holy name. Thank you for your unfailing love that surrounds me.
Thank you that you have been with me from birth; no wonder I want to praise your might deeds, and tell everyone about You. Lord, be my everything. Amen.

One week from today I will be in my new home...:)
It has been nice in this transitional period between one job and the other/one home and the other to not only check in of a morning but to be able to respond!
This morning the theme of "trust" jumped out at me. In John 6:29 Jesus teaches us "The work of God is this - to believe in the one he sent". We are to be faithful in this belief and we are to press into him with complete confidence and trust:
The helpless put their trust in you (Psalm 10:14c)
For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. (Psalm 33:4)
In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust his holy name. (Psalm 33:21)
I've trusted you, O Lord from childhood. (Psalm 71:5b)
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. (Psalm 91:2b)
I will protect those who trust in my name. (Psalm 91:14b)

Good Afternoon Ladies,
Psalm 91 is definitely the Insurance Policy we all need to rely on during times of stress, fear, doubt and uncertainty.
May I challenge all of you to begin praying Psalm 91 over our military? The NC National Guard has just lost 4 of their men last week. With all the 4th of July Celebrations, my mind kept drifting back to those families without their Daddy, husband, son, or friend. May the God of all Comfort be their strength as they prepare to lay their love ones to rest. I pray God would strategically place men and women in their midst to provide the comfort of the scriptures to mend their broken dreams as they look forward to his divine provisions until his return.
As a soldier's wife, I would greatly appreciate your commitment to pray Psalms 91 over the men and women who are fighting everyday for the freedoms we enjoy and often take for granted.

Debbie - I'll pray Psalm 91 over our troops with you. My cousin and her husband are missionaries in Guatemala, and they requested prayers of safety and protection for themselves and the project they are undertaking. They were feeling under attack by the evil one. I emailed her this morning, told her about reading this Psalm and said I was praying it over them today. I like your idea too of praying it for the men and women who so selflessly serve my country.
