I, too wanted to skip over some of the geneology because it kept repeating itself, but I didn't because I was scared I'd miss something. When I finished, I was like... uh, okay.lol I didn't even get the fact about the prophecy being fulfilled, so thank you, Wendy for opening my eyes to that.
I did receive how important lineage is. I've always been fascinated with where I come from. Especially since there is so much different history and culture from my mom and dad. I know people who don't know and don't care to know where... they think I'm strange. haha! And maybe I am, but I get excited sharing our history with my daughter and the fact that her great-great-grandfathers name is on the wall at Ellis Island. Or the fact that we come from Jewish bloodline, also... along with Native Indian--on both sides. We are so mixed with so many nationalities that as a child it was like we were muts... but I see that it just gives a more diverse heritage of color and richness from the one who created all men.
And, like you Wendy, I see that I'm a daughter of the Most High King. What richer heritage and lineage can there be?
Thank you for tying together the prophecy fulfilled Wendy. Yes, readings like the one today tend to be a bit boring. I concur.
One thing I do notice when reading geneologies is when a woman is named. This is rare in the Bible so I marked it. A woman named Timna is listed and later in the reading Timna is named as a clan leader. Made me wonder what Timna was like - I'm picturing a tough broad here....one that could stand up and lead the men of her time. God has a special purpose for each of us. Timna found hers.
He also has a purpose for listing geneologies in His word and I trust that even though I struggle to read them that they are important.
Finally a heat wave here...into the 30's! Waahoo!

That is so great what you saw in the prophecy. I agree, the first time thru the I too skimmed going ok ok ok. But today I tried to really see what was going on, I got more but still not what you did so thank you. Also I tell my daughters all the time, you can do (whatever) you are the daughter of the most high God. It was great to hear you say that too, brought a smile to my face.
Something New: Gen 36:12, Gen 36:22, 1 Chron 1:36 and 1 Chron 1:39 are specific about naming Timna as the mother of Amalek, Sister of Lotan and concubine of Elephaz - Hadn't seen this in the linage before.
Something different: In general I saw this linage differently by paying closer attention and seeing that these are leaders of the tribes. (however Wendy gave it even more meaning..) :)
Something to do: Stealing Wendy's Thank God and my parents for my lineage.

Wendy, I greatly appreciated your vlog this morning. I new the lineage was important and made several notes. I had no idea it was a prophesy and blessing being fullfilled. Thank you! Reading the Bible is like reading the bible - we aren't sure why the author is telling us something in the beginning but we always find out later. I will look at reading the Bible in a different way.

What does Edom mean?
Each descendent became a king who ruled the land of Edom. Each king ruled from a different city.

Good Morning~ Well, I must confess that last year I skimmed right over these scriptures. I did not get too much today still, but I know that all scripture is God spoken. Each year we will glean a bit more.
Thank you for your teaching Wendy! That is what I have dearly loved about the O.T. seeing bit by bit how things written came about at a later date. Thank you for sharing about Gen. 25:23.
One thing new I noticed: Gen. 36:11, "The descendants of Eliphaz were Teman..." My Study Bible pointed out that Eliphaz the Temanite (Job 2:11) was one of Job's friends. Job himself was from the land of Uz (job.1:1), so possibly he lived in Edom.
As I pray daily for unsaved people in my own family and even my future, DIL's, in-law's, cousins, etc. I pray that they will each be saved, and strong in their faith. I do not really care if my
(future) great-great-grand-daughter remembers my name, but I would be honored if she knew about my faith, and that my faith would be passed down, from one generation to the next. Oh, I so badly want all of my family to be living in eternity with me, all of our names written in the Book of Life.

I read that "Seir" (36:8) is another name for Edom. The word itself is related to the Hebrew word meaning "hair," a possible meaning also for the name "Esau." [NIV study Bible]

Wendy thank you for reminding us of our genealogy in Christ. I was so tempted to pass over the reading quickly but did ask the Lord to show me His desire in listing genealogies. I found interesting the Amalek, son of Eliphaz and Timna. Doing some search now on if he is THE Amalek....

I confess to reading the genealogy rather quickly, then took in Wendy's comments and went back to re-read the word for today.

No matter when I have read the bible, I have always rushed through the genealogies. This time, ya, my mind set was "There's gotta be something here to take from, it's God's word!". Although there wasn't much, and Wendy, you helped a lot in opening my eyes to the connections, I did find a few things.
Something old:
The NT uses a lot of the genealogies from the OT. Again showing how important they are even after hundreds of years.
Something new: Edom had kings before Israel had them.
Life application: Everything I do could possibly effect my future generations. It could effect my sister's future generations. One MAJOR theme of Genesis so far is "family". So important!
I too am very interested in my genealogy. It's always fun to hear who was in your family tree. :)

Another daughter of the Most High King checking in. Thank you, Wendy, for that. I am blessed with the family I have on earth but more blessed with the ones I am going to meet in heaven.
It was hard to glean something from this genealogy. I did read a commentary that mentioned some people believe that the Jobab (Gen 36:34) may be Job, because of the mention of Eliphaz, the Temanite (his uncle). This makes Job a contemporary of Jacob and Esau.
Something new to me was that the Edomites had kings before the Israelites. I found this commentary by Matthew Henry: "Note, Titles of honour have been more ancient out of the church than in it. Esau’s sons were dukes when Jacob’s sons were but plain shepherds, ch. 47:3. This is not a reason why such titles should not be used among Christians; but it is a reason why men should not overvalue themselves, or others, for the sake of them. There is an honour that comes from God, and a name in his house that is infinitely more valuable. Edomites may be dukes with men, but Israelites indeed are made to our God kings and priests."
And another good one: "... The children of this world have their all in hand, and nothing in hope (Lu. 16:25); while the children of God have their all in hope, and next to nothing in hand. But, all things considered, it is better to have Canaan in promise than mount Seir in possession."

I couldn't figure out why the genealogy of Esau was put in, so I got out M Henry Comm. and one thing that I found was that Esau's family became kings before Jacob's although God had promised Jacob that from his loins there would be kings. It also said that Esau's line was still kings while Jacob's line were in bondage in Egypt and how hard that must have been for Israel. It took a long time for God's promise to Jacob to come true.
Nugget: Slow can be good, a refining time or a time of preparing. I want my treasures to be everlasting not just a flash in the pan.
Couple of prayer requests: My son leaves today for Basic Training--Army National Guard (Infantry) and for the millions of people in Haiti effected by the earthquake. The next 48 hours are critical in the rescue and response.
Well, my notes today said "A lot of geneology"! LOL Thank you Wendy for your insight. I too picked up on the few women that were named and how there was a reason for that.
Anyone else have a problem with the vlog not playing the entire way??? Mine stopped and would not start at 7:18 into it. :(

It has been so much fun to watch this text for today come to life. It is so inspiring to me to read of others who faced what looked like a passage to be skimmed with determination to dig deep...and what treasures you have found!'
It is so cool for me here in Alaska (no pun intended!) that due to the time differences many of you have already read, researched and commented before I even get out of bed! :)
I am always so excited after my time alone with our Father to come here to meet with all of you and read what you have been thinking as you began your day!
**Reminds me a bit of Wendy's teaching New Year's Day that our day really begins in the evening - much is being done in the kingdom as we sleep. :)
What stood out to me today is the pattern of rest stops in the Bible...more than once we stop and take note of who & where we are, what & who is happening, what & who has happened...taking a breath to remember and regroup before moving along. Honoring the past and present before moving along.
I, too, was caught by the mention of Eliphaz and Timna this read through, and I have very much appreciated all of your notes and thoughts on this!
My notes from last year on this section say "this is our family tree!" This year, I will again pause in praise and thanksgiving for all God has taught us through all of the generations.

I struggled with today's readings. My mind would go blank when reading the genealogy. It took some quiet & prayer for the Lord to bless me.
1)heard in a new way; Thank you all for your insights today. It gave me a fresh way to look at who begot who.
2)did not know; Genesis 36:6-8 Esau (also know as Edom) leaves the area of Canaan because the land could not support his family & that of his brother Jacob. Esau moves away to Seir.
3)nugget; Sometimes even if we are there 1st or are right, we need to 'move on' for the harmony of the family.

Hi All, I have been kind of slacking about commenting consistently, but I AM journaling regardless of whether I find time to put it up here. Working on the latter part :)
I found today's reading interesting because in my church we are going through Luke's gospel, and this past sunday's message was on the geneology of Jesus - 76 names, most of which I knew nothing of, not to mention struggled to pronounce. But I appreciate having that lesson in the same week that I had a geneology reading in this walk through the Bible! What it helped me glean from this was that we all play a part in the big picture and that it isn't up to us whether we will be one of the known names or one of their parents, grandparents, etc, it is up to God. I love that he has a plan for my life already laid out from beginning to end and that if I let him guide me (and stop trying to control it on my own) I will get all the things he has promised to me as a decendent of David of Abraham of Noah, but most importantly as a child of God. He is the BEST father a girl could hope to have.
I picked up on the Esau/Edom thing, and appreciate the clarification above - interesting the two names for hair, he must have been REALLY hairy!
None of this was really familiar to me specifically, but I like that you can see the fulfillment of prophecy as the two nations grow and develop and will (soon) separate. Interesting stuff for a bunch of names ;)

Grace and Peace, I would've just skimmed today's reading if not for the happy message you posted on January 1st. When I saw that today's reading consisted mostly of geneology, I was afraid to miss something else as totally amazing as the Gospel message written out in a bunch of names - so I drew out a family tree and asked God what the importance was in this. I don't think I ever would've gotten the prophecy fulfillment on my own, but it did give me the patience and interest to work on it. Thanks! I love your research notes.
1. Someone of imortance must be descended from Esau. Does Amalek become the original of the Amalekites??
2. Several women were remembered in this geneology. They must have really stood out.
3. I want some part of my life to be worthy of remembering thousands of years from now - not what I drove or where I lived or even my name necessarily, but hopefully it will convey a message of faith to those who come after me - and I guess that starts with my children, who are currently two and four. That is my prayer for today.

I checked blueletterbible.com for "Timna." I found her name in the concordance. It confirmed that the name is feminine so she really is a woman. It also said she was one of the dukes/rulers in Edom's tribe. I found that fascinating because I always thought it was a patriarchal society.
Really loving all the study and digging that we're doing here. So much different than when I was reading the bible by myself and it was really just reading.

This is my second try reading the word with you guys. I started in 2009 and didn't make it all the way but still logged into Wendy's blog every day to see what was posted. I'm trying again this year and I absolutly love the vlog. I skimmed right over all the geneology and that that there wouldn't be much to say about today's reading, but boy was I wrong. After listening to Wendy and starting and stopping the video several times, I have a whole page of notes in my journal. I feel like I know many of you guys already from last year, but I never posted. Family trees are important to God, that is clear. I know with my own heritage, it's always been something I've been interested. I took the time in my notebook to write out family trees starting with my Dad's parents, my Mom's parents, and my Hubs parents. My Dad's parents died when he was young, so I never knew them, but his oldest sister kept the family together and I love hearing stories about their family. My Mom's dad died right before my 13th birthday and Grandma passed May 2009. Family is very important to me and I love learning about my linage.

I come from a very close-knit family. We still do a huge bi-annual family reunion in different locales...and my extended family is so big now that I have trouble remembering all the younger ones names!
The importance of ancestry and where we come from must be important or it wouldn't be in God's word. I must confess...because we live in a different town than everyone but my immediate family, my kids didn't grow up with the same sense of belonging to a larger group. I wish I could change that...
I was reminded to hold family dear to my heart and enjoy every second of reunions and visits. How important family is...and what a blessing from our Father!

OK, I too admit to skimming! I felt super guilty however after listening to the vlog, knowing that our family history is amazing and wonderful. To know where we came from is HUGE! There are so many people out there that wonder all of their lives and I'll we have to do is point them to their Father in Heaven!
One thing that someone at our church pointed out, is that all of these names are documented not only here in the Bible, but also in the tablets of human history! And to know that that can be traced back to Adam and Eve and that if I tried really hard, I could actually trace it back myself!
