This is my first ever post and I just wanted to say how much I am loving reading through the Bible this way! Wendy, thanks for the time you take to study for and post every vlog/blog. And thanks to all who are posting comments, unearthing gems from the Lord. What a blessing.
I, too, loved Jacob's reference to the Lord as his Shepherd and his Angel, as he blessed his grandsons. I thought the blessings upon his own sons were interesting, especially Judah's! In Gen 49:9,10, Jacob refers to Judah as "a young lion" and "the one whom all nations will honor". Who is our Lion of Judah? Who is the One Whom all nations will honor? None other than our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
May our lives bring Him glory today!

#2 Today, God opened my eyes to see a similarity between these precious people and us living in today’s world. Jacob knew their sojourn in Egypt was not to be a permanent one, but that it would be a time of preparing his family to become a “great nation.” We, on the other hand, are here on this earth, preparing ourselves for eternity, (Luke 12:20- & 21). Are we one of those seeds that, “fell among the thorns,” hearing God’s word, but too quickly his “message is crowded out by the worries of this life,” (Matthew13:22), or are we trusting in him and seeking to know him and follow him more each day. The “things,” of this world keep us from doing His will. Satan will do all he can to captivate our thoughts in order to keep us from focusing on Christ. Sin makes us a slave, but Jesus gives us freedom!
#3 Something I need to do is seek daily to be that person God wants me to be so that I can do the purpose for which He created me to do.

I found some of the same points you made Wendy as well in my reading today. I greatly appreciate vlog! I also liked how Jacob referred to God The Mighty One (Mary also called him this in the passage of Luke), the Shepherd, and the Rock of Israel.
Something familiar but new:
That the younger brother Ephraim got the blessing just like Jacob had received it from Isaac. Found out Ephraim's name means two fruit land or two pasture land and that Joshua and Samual came from this tribe - the Epharimites.
Something new:
Judah's blessing of the coming Messiah - "the sceptor will not depart from Judah....until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one who all nations will honor."
Nugget:
I found it so beautiful how Joseph handled his brothers and answered their fears. "You intended harm for me but God intended it all for good - no don't be afraid of me - I will continue to care for you. He reassured them by speaking KINDLY TO THEM." A reminder that God will use all things for good and to let God be the one who handles judgement - the Rock of Meredith!

Wendy, God led me to your blog through your Proverbs 31 devotion a week or so ago. Thank you, thank you. Do not be discouraged if you think readership is down, you are doing God's will and you will be blessed. I am blessed already! I am in a weekly bible study (chronoligical bible) and over the holidays I feel like we have sort of lost our momentum (I have no doubt WE will get back on track). I am blessed daily through this blog and I have been listening to Beth Moore's Patriarch series CD in my car while doing long hours of driving. I am writing God's word on my heart and praise God, He is changing me.

Good morning, Wendy and everyone! I also identified with Wendy's vblog and the points she made.
1.The similarity between Isaac and Jacob's blessing of the sons. Claiming Joseph's sons as his own which will be included in the 12 tribes.
2.Egyptians embalmed their dead. Jacob and Joseph's burial requests and their promises to return to Canaan. The sons honoring their death wishes.
3. The mourning and ceremonies reminded me of "state funerals" with them traveling distances, the chariots and charioteers accompanying Joseph and the family.
Jacobs blessings were prophetic for each, especially Judah and the Lion of Judah!

Wendy I love what you pointed out: Joseph said "when" not "if." God's promises are sure and we must never waiver in our belief.
Also I love the admonition of your parents: Remember to whom you belong. That certainly applies to us as blood-bought children of God, too, doesn't it? Remember to Whom we belong.
It was a sad reading today. One bible study I attended summarized Genesis this way: It began with a birth and ended with a coffin in Egypt. That is what sin did to this world.
I also love Jacob's blessings to his grandsons. I pray those blessings for my own boys! I'd like to sahre what David Hocking said when Joseph was upset about the switching of the hands and tried to lift Jacob's hand: "Of course like all of us, Joseph wanted to help make sure God got things right; but Jacob put a stop to that right away." (Jacob was following the promptings of God, he was not pronouncing his blessing out of his own preference.) Isn't it just like us to try to help God along?
I am looking forward to uncovering the blessing/prophecy Jacob bestowed to each of his sons in the future readings.
My familiar but new: Joseph kept his word when he told Pharaoh he would return after burying his father. He knew the time was not right for the children of Israel to come and possess the land of Canaan. God still had a job for him to do in Egypt. It shows that those days in the pit/prison molded Joseph's character and enabled him to be in tune with God. May we all be sensitive and in tune with God's timing.

Familiar with Jacob's blessings, new to me this morning was the way he begins "gather sround me and I will tell you what will happen to each of you in the days to come." Genesis 49:1
I just loved that, for I often think of my time with our Father as sitting on his lap and letting him read to me. I think of times of corporate worship as us gathering at his feet to listen to him.
So this felt very familiar but new to me today!
I had not noticed before the contrast of how Joseph spoke to his brothers in Genesis 50:21 (kindly) as opposed to the way he reported his dreams to them in Genesis 37:8 (and they hated hinm all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them) - as Wendy pointed out in her teaching the other day.
It really struck me today that no matter how unfair it might have been that Jospeh was sent to prison for something he did not do, he really did need a time out to develop his leadership and his communication skills. At the time he was sent to prison, he was not exactly "a prince among his brothers." Genesis 48:26
My to do today is to remember God intends it all for good (Genesis 50:20) - to remember my fears, anxieties, stresses, pressures and concerns are open doors to enter into the peace and joy that can only come from laying our burdens down at the feet of Jesus and resting in him as he unknots the knots in our lives, and we "overflow with the peace of the Holy Spirit" Romans 15:13
Also, my to do is to remember and give glory at all times to God who "has been my shepherd all my life to this very day, the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm." Genesis 48:15
I love what God is doing here through Wendy and through all of us!
Before I go, I want to discuss my own attendance here - the first part of this year I am doing quite a bit of traveling (sans laptop! eek!) and so am unable to share my "lesson learnings" every day. When home again, I catch up on my readings, the vlogs, and all of your comments. It is a most delicious time I anticipate almost as much as dessert! :)

1)heard in a new way; Genesis 49:1-27 Jacob blesses each of his sons. A prophecy is given about Jesus coming through Judah line. v8-12
2)did not know; Genesis 48:5 Jacob claims Joseph's two sons Ephraim (younger son) & Manasseh (oldest son) as his own. Jacob blesses them in Gen 48:12-20. A younger son is once again given the blessing over the older son.
Genesis 50:15,19-21 Joesph's brothers are afraid of what Joesph will do now that their father Jacob/Israel is dead. vs19 'Don't be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you?
3)nugget; Birth order has no meaning when it comes to how God blesses us. When our Lord forgives us, He no longer remembers our sin. Hebrews 10:17. I need to learn to forgive & forget. (Luke 17:4)

My to do is to remember God has plans for my children, they are not my plans, but His. When Jacob was blessing Joseph's children and had his arms crossed, then Joseph was upset and tried to correct him. May I remember to trust my Father and not correct Him.

What a wonderful reading today. Actually seeing you Wendy teach this bible is great. I am at times intimidated to write, I cant always articulate what I want to say. However God has spoken saying speak what is on my heart.
I thank God for bringing me back to this study for a second year.

I have grown to love the story of Joseph. The rememberances of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is a thread that keeps the Bible connected throughout. God's promises to be fulfilled perhaps not in our generation but the next is an awesome revelation to hold onto when we question God about the promises we hear.
The NUGGET I gleaned was when Joseph is speaking to his brothers in Gen 49: 19 & 20 "Dont' be afraid of me...Am I God, that I can punish you? You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people."
When "bad" things happen in our life perhaps they are intented for good, for a purpose, for a purpose we are called to by God.
This reminds me of Romans 8:28 "God makes good of all things who love Him and are called to His purpose." We can go with the ebs and flows of life with God in control knowing he holds the big picture, the whole picture! Amen!

I'm still with ya! ;-) I (like a few others have mentioned) don't always comment because I don't have the time early in the morning and by the time I get a chance to check the comments everyone else has already said what I have written down in my notebook :) I thought I'd share one of my nuggets today:
This comes from the notes in my NLT, LASB: Genesis 48: 8-20 Jacob gave Ephraim, instead of his older brother Manasseh, the greater blessing. When Joseph objected, Jacob refused to listen because God had told him that Ephraim would become greater.
This is the part I LOVE:
"God often works in unexpected ways. When he chooses people to fulfill his plans, he always goes deeper than appearance, tradition, or position. He sometimes surprises us by choosing the less obvious person, at least by human reasoning. God can use you to carry out his plans, even if you don't think you have all the qualifications"
I really needed to read those words today. I was asked to lead a rotating Women's Bible study for our church and I was dragging my feet calling the lady back and letting her know if I'd do it or not because I didn't feel "qualified". A lot of the ladies in this group are elders in our church and all I could think was, "what could I possibly teach them in a Bible study that they don't already know, they are so much more experienced than me!" But after reading this, I knew it was the Lord speaking to me. I called the lady back and took the challenge. I really needed the boost of confidence and to be reminded that I'm part of this "family of God" and I too can be an encouragement to others (by the Grace of God).

Hi Everyone,
Enjoying the day with my boys here in TN. Loved the reading, comments and your vlog today Wendy, as usual :) I have not had a lot of time to comment lately. I am still reading my daily reading each night before I go to sleep but I am focusing alot of my study time on finishing up my Beth Moore study. We are talking about fruit of the spirit that I desperately need to be shown in my life and it is a word direct from God to me right now.
One thing that was new to me today was that Leah was buried in the family lot that Abraham had bought (Genesis 49:31). I felt that was really significant after the rough start Leah had in her marriage to Jacob. I would hope that as he grew in the Lord he also grew in his feelings for her and she did not live the rest of her marriage the way it started off.

May I say how thankful I am for this blog not only for the wisdom I glean from everyone but for practical application as well?
I'm having a hard time with a co-worker. She's messed up the billing AND she did not report the time she was out last week when she called in payroll. I was getting very upset! Should I confront her? Tell the boss that she's getting away with things? What to do?? Then I checked my phone to read the additional messages. God used the comment that Debbie in Illinois left to speak to me: "Am I God, that I can punish you?" That calmed me down. So I decided to step back and let God deal with her and He will lead my boss to her deception. Eventually.
That's my long way of encouraging you all to post. You never know who needs a word from God. And He may just use you.

This is my 2nd time to try to post today, for some reason I'm having continued trouble getting it to accept my posts.
My new-to-me was that Jacob gave Joseph an extra portion of land in the Promised Land. My commentary said that it was a ridge near Sychar, which in the present day is the West Bank. Over the years it has first belonged to one side and then the other, back and forth, just as it is today.
My to-do, is to keep praying for my kids and grandkids...that is the most important thing I can do for them. I even pray for g-kids spouses-to-be, (my g-kids are 15 mo., 10 yrs, and 17) that they will be Godly men and women, and that they will come from Christian homes.

Sometimes as parents God is telling us to "get out of His way" when dealing with our children. He loves them more than we do, and He knows what's best. Joseph getting in the way of Jacob's blessings was not in God's will. There are times to step aside and let God do His work.

I don't think readership is down, I think the holidays are over and we have settled back into demanding school/work etc. lives.
We need to get our priorities worked out and while we may be reading we may not have time to write in the blog - maybe our thoughts only make it to our own journal or maybe we share them with God or someone we are talking with during the day.
I know I have missed a couple of days, but I am up to date on my reading now. I'm mostly a reader not a blogger. So please don't be discouraged if the number of comments is low - God is still working out here! I have recommended numerous friends and people in my church join and I am sure some of them have.
I know how you feel Wendy! I am planning a Breakfast to kick-start our women's ministry at my church and when I announced it last week 7 or 8 people asked me where was the sign up sheet - this week only 4 signed up. I refuse to stress I am anxiously awaiting what God has planned for us on Saturday. You have to be willing to "let go and let God!" I joyfully surrender to My God - may His will be done!!!

I am just lovin this new Chronological Bible and reading the bible in this way. Wendy, I am so glad I joined you all on this journey. It's amazing the details of Jacob and Joseph's lives that I am picking up in my daily reading that I have not learned before. I especially appreciated Jacob's speaking the blessing over his family. It reminds me how important it is that I pray over my children and grandchildren and ask God to bless them and their futures.
