The Joshua Challenge
"Purify yourselves for tomorrow the LORD will do great wonders among you."
Joshua 3:5

Video processing problem with youtube... I will submit later when youtube cooperates with the plan. Do you think satan doesn't want us toe commit to the "Joshua Challenge?"

My Take Aways

Something Old:
Joshua 4:4-4:7
What memorial am I leaving my children? A Bible with dust, a church only attended but never served, the needs of others not met...

Something New:
Joshua 6:4
The Israelites had to carry the Ark of the Covenant as they marched around the city Jericho.

Something to Do:
The "Joshua Challenge"
Prepare, dedicate separate myself, consecrate-declare myself holy and devote and dedicate myself to the purpose of seeing the amazing things God wants to do around me.

Hi Wendy,

Sorry to hear about your technical difficulties. I hope they are resolved soon!

Today's reading was very rich for me. I underlined loads of things that I did not remark on last year!

New for me: Joshua 3:16a the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam...

The town was called Adam. The name Joshua is etymologically the same as the name Jesus. The Ark, in verse 11 is called "the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth" and it is stated (it) "will go into the Jordan ahead of you."

Jesus is the ark made manifest. He is Emmanuel, God with us. He prepares a way for us (on dry ground) rescuing us from the sin, originating with the first man (Adam) that threatens to overwhelm us; perhaps even drowns us. He leads us in to His habitation, and plants us on His holy mountain (Exodus 15:13,17), the promised land. This picture is repeated in Revelation 16 when the river Euphrates is also dried up to prepare the way for the Kings of the East (Rev. 16:12).

Also new to me was Joshua 5:9 Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.

This reminded me of the rolling away of the stone at the tomb. Matthew Henry says this about the "rolling away":

God is jealous for the honour of his people, his own honour being so much interested in it; and, whatever reproach they may lie under for a time, first or last it will certainly be rolled away, and every tongue that riseth up against them he will condemn.

David Guzik says this:

b. God called Israel to a place where they saw themselves as they were in Him. By faith, they could see themselves as an obedient, trusting people, and to stop seeing themselves as they were in their slavery and bondage.

i. Of course, this is the same work God wants to do in us, taking away the dishonor and shame of our previous sin and rebellion, and seeing ourselves as who we are in Jesus.

c. How was the reproach rolled away? By their radical trust and obedience to God, by taking the specific action He told them to.

He still wants to do this for us; to remove our dishonor and shame, to roll away our inhibitions and "slavery mind". He wants us to show radical trust in Him.

Who knew that I could see the Easter story in Joshua!

Have a great day FIGs!

Good morning GIG's,

PTL we have Karen to be our "substitute teacher" today while Wendy has tech difficulties. Very, very interesting remarks, Karen. Thank you.

As a first time reader of this section of the Bible (when doing it on my own I pretty much kept to the New Testament), most of this was new to me today. What exciting visuals it created -- the thousands crossing the Jordan over dry land just like at the Red Sea. Wow! Walking around the town of Jericho for 7 days with the Ark, and then seeing the walls fall down. More terrible violence as Jericho was destroyed.

My two take ways -- The big miracles in today's reading reminded me that there are small miracles around me every day that I need to appreciate and thank God for.

The violence in today's reading reminded me of an "emotionally violent" time in my life which actually led me back to Christ, my own promised land. Without this "violence" I, too, might still be wandering in the desert. I guess violence is a needed part of God's plan sometimes, as sad as that is, because we are sinners and sometimes that is the only way God can get our attention.

Peace,
Michelle in New England

Hi…… My Sweet and Special People….Whom I am so grateful for. A thanks to you ALL!! ……..today. So many again I would love to make a comment to. Today just Know your all someone special.

Today I caught a lot from this reading….the words “great leaders”…jumped out at me last night while reading it….found myself up after the boys went to bed letting you a comment on yesterdays vlog. Lori in there I wanted to encourage you….You just have to be a great Mother…your oldest son reading that is awesome. I read our young Kristen’s comment from last night before posting….I only wish I was reading his word at your young age of 28. I was in one of the hardest exile in my life at that age and if I could of known Him as close as I do now….Oh the understanding I would have had.

Jennifer in Iowa...Yes they are the Little purple & (black or white) series. I love em too:)...yesterday I also wanted to tell you to wish your Mom that "Happy Birthday".

Michelle in New England....How is your sister Denise doing? Think of her through out my day.

This here verse is another great one….. after reading the foot notes in the New American Bible is:

Joshua 6:25, Because Rehab the harlot had hidden the messengers whom Joshua had sent to reconnoiter Jericho, Joshua spared her with her family and all her kin, who continue in the midst of Israel to this day.

Rehab…..What Became of Her?

Footnote on Joshua 6:25 says: Mt. 1:5
Mt. 1:5-6.…Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rehab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse 6Jesse the father of David the king.

….we learn that Rehab married Salmon of the tribe of Judah and thus became the great-great-grandmother of David, Christ’s ancestor. cf. Ruth 4:18-22. …..Oh and how I will always skim over the list of genealogy.

a couple of points I received are:

– God rewards and blesses those who help those who are doing God’s work (as Rahab helped the 12 Jewish spies).

– When we are blessed by God, those blessings can continue for generations and generations. Rahab’s courageous act meant deliverance for her and her family, an opportunity to become a part of the chosen people of God, and ultimately a part of the human family line that would lead directly to the Messiah himself!

Dear Rhonda, thank you for thinking of my sister. Denise must have a heart ablation today. Any procedure in her condition is very risky. I would covet the prayers of my GIG's today for Denise. Thank you

Good Morning Friends, Wendy, I accept the Joshua challenge. I don't watch much TV or go on the computer all that often, what I do, is play Sudoku. Just before I go to bed I play a game or two. Well that time will be spent on verse 3:5 "Purify yourself for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you" I am so excited to see how our great God is going to work in & through each of us.
My new is 5:13-15, The commander of the Lord's army appears to Joshua. An angel goes before us to fight for the Lord & us! What a comfort to know that God is protecting us always.
My Old, 6:22-25, the two spies brought out Rahab & her family & they lived among the Israelite. I love how God uses everything & everyone to bring us closer to him.
my nugget is the Joshua challenge.
Blessing & Peace Mary

Heavenly Father; be with Denise today as she faces this medical procedure. May the doctors and those attending her be of sharp minds and have steady hands. We trust You will be right there with Denise. Give her courage and strength that knows no bounds. Let Michelle and the rest of the family feel Your peace that passes all understanding. May they trust that You've got their backs. Amen.

Today was good reading. Wouldn't it be something to see that many people crossing over the dry Jordan River? wowzie!

I wondered why the circumcision practice had stopped in the wilderness? Even Moses was in trouble for not circumcising his own son, and everything stopped there until he obeyed God and did it. The people had to be circumcised to participate in the Passover,(Ex 12:44) so did they not celebrate the passover during their wilderness wanderings?
Maybe the meaning of circumcision was changing into more of what it means for us today - to circumcize our hearts (repent) - that is the most important form of circumcision. Anyway..now that they have left their wilderness they must once again all be circumcized and get within the covenant that God made with Abraham years before.

Blessed day, GIG!
Morgen

ps...I've never in my life written the word circumcized so many times in one paragraph!

Hi Wendy,
This morning when I did my comment...the vlog was not working. It's there now. The challenge you will have us on...I would just like to send encouragment. Everyone it is great. When lent started...Way back Feb 17...I try my hardest to purify myself through these 40 days of lent. Prayer is a must for our family...growing up I remember Dad having us down on our knees all 11 of us to do the rosary. Thanks Mom & Dad... for the great picture of this in my mind today and for the great example....This is continued down to this generation in my family. Through those repetusious "Hail Marys"....so many of you are thought of and lifted up in prayer. I find myself more giving to the poor...fasting on desert and no meat on Fridays. TV is not a problem for me. Not much on it today. One thing I do struggle with is playing spider solitary on the computer...I have not played it yet so far. This time now is spent in reading his word....and what an unexplainable experience this has been for me.

Lets cross the Jordan...

Oh my goodness sweet sisters where to begin, when I have so very much to say! Wendy, your "talk" just touched me this morning...I will take this challenge to declare to be apart of God's wonder. Anticipating and participating!

Michelle, I'm also noticing small miracles more and more, but God is bigger than we give him credit for. Let's all of us step out in faith, and look for some BIG miracles. He is so able, if we will only trust and believe. I have an unsaved neighbor right now, that I'm praying God will begin to pursue. She rolls her eyes when I make little comments about how I'm praying for her (she has a foot condition), but she can't help herself, because she likes me and the Lord I know has drawn us to be together so that I can influence her! I'm not "too much" with her, just "a little" :) just modeling his love and compassion, sisters-that's all we have to do!

Thank you for that prayer for Denise, Morgen! Praying too! I want her to be at the wedding this summer!

My New: I did not remember the priests carrying the Ark first and waiting for everyone to cross over. The Lord's presence right there in view, the whole time. The power he was placing on those Levites to hold it up and all the people marching through. It just gives me chills. What a miracle! They knew without a doubt that the Lord was with them!

Circumcision had been started back during Abraham’s time-this was a sign of the people’s Covenant relationship with Him (Gen. 17:9-14). Before participating in Passover it was mandatory (Ex. 12:8). Humbly, this new generation submitted to circumcision. As they obeyed God, they were protected.

Circumcision and the Passover foreshadowed commands of believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper for the Church.

My To Do: Take the Joshua Challenge and get ready to watch God in action! WOW!

Yikes, my post got rejected because it was too long, so I will post the remaining in a sec.

Hugs, Lori

Back again,

Thank you, Karen! You are a wonderful gal full of wisdom! So appreciate your posts every day!

Rhonda, loved your "wisdom" you shared last evening! -every point was so, so true! I too, had thoughts of wishing I was reading God's word at 28, like young Kristin! I know that the enemy would prefer us to keep looking at our past and dwelling on the "I wish..." Today. That's what God is whispering to me to dwell on. Today...Tomorrow...That's why he opened up that song that we sang in church to me on Sunday. The one about the 'future generations.' Just his loving way, telling me everything is going to be ok, even tho my youngest in not reading the Word, daily. He is going to church and he loves his youth pastor. The enemy is trying to distract him, but Jesus is in his heart! God will pursue him in his time, just like he did with me. I'm anticipating this! I just hope I'm alive to see it! :) God has blessed my socks right off of my feet with a wonderful husband, who provides for our family, so that I can stay home, and who really exhibits more "Christian traits" than most saved people. God is going to save Dave, too! I just know it! Kristin-his mother is an atheist too, and he went to a Catholic HS. That is one of the reasons why I knew I had to read the Bible. He can talk circles around me re: the O.T. Satan has a veil covering his eyes, but as my light shines, it will be blown away and he, too will be a Believer! Kristin, still praying for a Godly man for you! No dating, unsaved men, ya hear! That is an order from mamma Prince! :)

okay dear family, do wish I had more room, but I can imagine that this is long enough! So much more in today's reading that I want to share...I'm hoping someone that took Beth's, Believing God, class will be able to share re:Gilgal...I may come back later on to write re: this, but my day is pretty full, and I probably won't get time to 'write' just read and take in all the blessings from you all...wish I could hug each of you in person!

Love you all! Let's share His love today, and anticipate some big miracles to share His glory!
Lori

Sweet Dixie, so glad you posted! Wow, what you said, I can't get out of my mind. Pushing to the out limits...but, in reality we are only going that 1/10th! Ladies, we have a challenge in front of us! We need to push a little more!!! We can do it.

Jeanne love u to pieces...will check out those songs you mentioned to see if I can get them on my ipod.

I almost forgot, "Becoming More than a Good Bible Study Girl" by Lysa is a WONDERFUL book, incase you have not read it. Wendy, spoke of it on her vlog today. You will not be able to put it down!

Also, another book, "What a Husband Needs from His Wife" by, Melanie Chitwood. Amazing, is all I can say! After reading this book, I was enlightened even more how to pray for Dave! Marriage matters to God. Even when we think our marriage is fine, He wants us working at it. He wants us desiring to have a marriage made in Heaven. I always felt like I knew Dave, 100%. We've known each other since we were 18. God, lead me to pray something really simple...to pray that "I would know Dave more!" Since I've been praying that daily, God has shown me so many things about Dave, that has widen my love for him in such a deep way. I do believe, that year after year, we can love our spouses even more...just like the more we know our Father, the more we love and adore Him!

Bye AGAIN, :) Lori

Today is my first comment - I am so enjoying my first full trip through the Bible! I have been very blessed by this study.

My old: I have read the story of the fall of Jericho before, but it means so much more now that I know all that went ahead of it. For the Israelites to see the power of God and know that He was leading them into battle - gives me a shiver! :)

My new: I had never heard of the Lord's Commander before. How awesome for Joshua to know that the Commander of the Lord's army was there to lead them into battle. (We may not see Him, but the Lord leads us into our "battles" as well - we are never alone)

My To Do: I accept the "Joshua challenge". During our last weeks readings, I have really felt God's calling for me to spend more time teaching His Word to my children. I have printed His words to Joshua (Deut 31:8) on notecards and put them up in their rooms. From now until Easter I dedicate myself to spending more of our bedtime routine on Bible reading, devotions and prayers. Nothing is more important to me than the salvation of my children. I pray that as we learn more together as a family, we will all see the wonders of God among us.

Have a good day,
Tara

What an eye-opener today! Didn't remember reading or hearing that Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordon just like the Red Sea experience. Wondered though, God said they were not to be within 1/2 mile of the Ark. Was the water stopped for the 1/2 mile and they would have walked across 1/2 mile downstream on dry land? Not important, just wondered. They obeyed and it happened. That's all that matters.
Also read the book about Rahab (Redeeming Love) that was mentioned yesterday too. WONDERFUL book.
Praying for Denise, drs., nurses, family that they might feel the presence of our Almighty God as she rests in His hand for the heart procedure. Know that God IS present and it is just our responsibiity to rest in His presence.
Love the comments for everyone.
Ready to take the "Joshua Challenge" with you all. Excited to see what God is going to be doing in the coming days.
I loved the comment that Lori made about praying to know her husband more. We will be married 38 years in June and I am going to start praying that too! There is always more to know and learn about our spouse. Thank you for that challenge too.
Curious too about them not doing the circumcisions during the 40 year wandering. Courson stated in a commentary I listened to last week about imagining being one of those males being rounded up and told that you were now going to be circumcised. But it doesn't say anything about any of them bulking at the idea. They obeyed. WOW!
God's blessings on all of you. I enjoy each of you every day!

I have been reading with you all since Jan. 1, but seldom comment. Today, however, I feel led to say that I am going to commit to the challenge! As many above have said, my evenings are not really "routine", and I don't have a nightly habit or show to give up. But I do feel led to give up a habit/"addiction" I have to sugar for just the next 2 weeks, until Easter, and consecrate myself and purify my body. I can't wait to see how the Lord will help me through this and I pray that He will open my eyes to His wonders around me!
I had goose bumps today as I read of Joshua's encounter with the commander of the Lord's army. I know I had read that before, but the reality of his presence just hit me today, and the removal of the sandals...."holy ground"..just made me stop and feel His presence. One of my favorite songs "You are Standing On Holy Ground" came to mind. Thank you Lord for Your protection, provision, and power. For You Alone are HOLY!

Morgen, You crack me up, and I'm just sitting here laughing out loud!

Guess what, I was talking a shower and I was whispered a little challenge already! aahhh, God, He is so sweet! I'm believing in a big miracle, ya'll! I'm praying that our whole family will be sitting in church, Easter service-Dave included! If God can open up the waters, He can definitely guide Dave down the path to our Worship Center. I'm so excited...I'm praying everyday the next two weeks for this...It does seem impossible, but I'm believing. Thank you Wendy for opening our eyes to seek more outer limits! We are not settling for just that 10%, right, Dixie?! :)

WELCOME Tara!

Crossing the Jordan with you guys!
you betcha! Lori

This is my first comment! I have to tell you! I am studying Joshua on my own right now and that section grabbed a hold of me! I see now how God has been preparing me for this challenge. He had already instructed me to give up some t.v. this week. I have a person and issue that I am praying for and satan is attacking my mind terribly, but God is granting me an expectant heart! This is such encouragment for me! I will be prepared for His wonders and I will pray for others participating, too!

Thank you for your obedience!

Part one now.... part two later....
Hi everyone, I am finally posting after so very long. Family matters got me behind in my reading and I didn’t feel right to post without being caught up. I know, Wendy said to just jump right in, but I didn’t want to miss a precious word …..

Thank you all for your words of support and caring a few weeks ago concerning the troubles with our son. You are all so special to me. Our life has been one obstacle after another, and I know God has been carrying me as a man carries his child (Deut.1:31)

Thank you Amy for the visual lesson with the “helping hand of prayer”— this will be so perfect to use with all my grandchildren! And to Debbie, NC, thank you for your essay “Beware of Heights”— such a reminder to me, always, always-- humility and thanksgiving. This is such a struggle. I loved all the posts on St. Paddie’s everyone—a favorite of this Irish family!

On the poor being among us:
Rhonda and Jeanne (my mom’s name is Jeanne ☺), I stand in solidarity with you! As the oldest of 13 kids I understand how it feels to be hungry, in need, and different from everyone else. But God gave my family each other! And the fruits of this blessed family are rich! The imagination and creativity and tender hearts that grew in the absence of wealth have led to a family of teachers and care-givers, artists and musicians, united in a spirit of faith and celebration, enfolded in a bond that cannot be broken! My husband is a school admin, but chose a path of ministry in a parochial system rather than a path of financial security, and I have always told our kids that we are rich in LOVE! God’s blessings come in many forms! The second and third generations, who have witnessed the value we have placed on family are now forming their own bonds of love and security within their little families.
The poor around us have been given special talents and gifts from God, and we can help them recognize, appreciate and use these gifts in the body of Christ, so that they will feel blessed.

On our dear loved ones who are ill and losing the struggle:
The journey of illness and the death of someone beloved changes us forever. We can become a vessel of giving and receiving for the world. The pain, knowledge, and submission we learn can be a blessing to others who will someday need us to understand. We receive a gift in the passing of our beloved, a gift of an open heart. We learn to listen, to be patient, to share, to love with a whole new faith. I lost my little sister Maureen in June to ovarian cancer. (She was number 11 in our lineup.) As a nurse, I had the privilege of caring for her and teaching other sisters to care for her in her last weeks. As I saw her approaching heaven, completely emptied of herself and only ministering to us the living, I realized the true meaning of undying faith. She made us strong. I will be praying for those who are on this journey. May you be comforted in God’s tender arms. And may your pain become a blessing to others.

Jacque

Good morning FIGs. Having trouble w the computer this morning. It could be a spiritual attack too though I always suspected that thing is possessed anyway...So I'm using my phone and. I apologize in advance for typos.

Tina, I read your post last night. It is an honor to pray for Baby Claire. I love that she listens to the vlogs with you. Bless her heart.

Tonight is the last night of prayer & fasting simulcast. Last night we stayed in and watched on the internet. They read the prayer requests and my heart is saddened by the number of people suffering from cancer. Just like Jesus @ Lazarus' tomb, I wept at what sin has done to this world.

I echo Morgen's prayer for Denise. Heal her, Lord! Morgen I also keep forgetting to mention that we can see God working in your heart because like what someone said, we do not detect any hint of hardness in your posts.

Karen thank you for the exposition re Joshua & Jesus. Awesome as always.

Jan in TN how are you surviving w 5 guests afoot? We miss you.

Brandee is MIA, too.

Welcome Tara & Anonymous!

Now that attendance has been taken, on to today's reading:

When they crossed the Jordan the water did not recede until the priests stepped in. I picture us being the royal priesthood that if we want to lead our families to the Promised Land it is up to us to take that first step of faith. We need to step out and get our feet wet. That is why this Joshua challenge is so timely. Yes I am willing to give up two weeks of reality tv to see my husband walking with the Lord, to see my son sold out for Christ. Yes I am willing to let go of those Real Housewives who do nothing but bicker and fight anyway to have a God centered marriage.

When they conquered Jericho, God asked them to walk around the wall for 6 days. I remember Charles Stanley saying that they did that once when they wanted to purchase a building. So I had this idea that this could apply to anything. My DH had some things happen in his childhood w/c made him build up walls as fortified as Jericho. So I asked my women's group to pray for him for 6 days and the 7th day happened to be our regular mtg so we prayed as a group to tear down the walls. Less than a year later, God answered that prayer. Now, there are still residues and DH is not walking the way I want him to but the walls are down. I can see in. ;) so I encourage everyone with strongholds to try doing God's battle plan.

Have a blessed day, everyone!

i love Joshua 3:13...the priests had to show great faith and get their feet wet before the waters receded...am I getting my feet wet enough?

5:12...there is no more manna so they have to take care of that themselves...God is taken them off the baby food and is letting them grow a bit

New...The people were not to speak at all as they marched around Jericho

I am up for the Joshua Challenge...I will see how God moves and let you know

I am praying for Denise...as I do all of you...Have a wonderful day

Happy Tuesday Everyone,

What an exciting read today! To actually see the manifestation of God's powerful arm to this generation is amazing. They had heard about their parents miracles, but now that have their own testimony of God's power.

It is not enough to read about our fore father's God, we can believe to see the goodness of the Lord in our living today. Psalm 27:13

The Joshua Challenge is very timely for me. Our church is starting a Daniel Fast on the 29th for 21 days. I believe we are going to see the wonders of God just because we are asking.

Ephesians 3:20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us

All your comments have blessed me today. I'm learning so much from all of you.

Blessings!

Part two… on the Joshua challenge:
I turned 60 in January, and wanted to memorialize and mark this special year with something important. This was it-- God led me to this bible study-- this was my special challenge! The bible is unexplored territory for me. Since the beginning of this year I have been trying to see my life and the world through different eyes. As I am learning so much (from Wendy and all of you!) I am getting more and more uneasy with my faith life. It seems the more I learn, the more I am challenged to become. As we learned- once we know, we are accountable. OUCH! Is ignorance bliss? Wendy and all of you are calling my number to open my eyes, step up and take action.

Second challenge-- I know am being moved to “purify” my neglected home, but have been ignoring the stirrings until today. I have been immobilized by fear and sadness these last few months, and it has affected our environment. My sweet husband is so tolerant and patient, but I see that I must gather my forces and create a place of refuge and comfort for our family again. I need to pray for energy and a spirit of hope so my home can again be a reflection of God’s blessings. I know there will be great wonders to see, if only I can discipline my mind, heart and body. I will dedicate my efforts these next weeks to God-- I love new beginnings!

The legal decisions with our son Michael will be finalized in a week, and we are praying for guidance- it is hard to know where the line is between loving support and enablement. In this special circle of faith, I continue to ask for your prayers for strength and wisdom for Michael and for our family. Thank you.

And please always remember that I am keeping the special prayer intentions of all of you and your families and your dear friends on my lips and in my heart.

Blessings,
Jacque
PS The sun is finally shining in Nebraska! Thank you Lord!
And thanks for the hugs, Grace and Peace! They always help! ☺

I am really feeling dumb right now!! I have read through the Bible every year for the past twenty years. Some years I didn't get through it. Wendy, I feel real dumb because as I listen to your teaching and read the comments I don't see what you all see when you read each day. I don't seem to be getting any nuggets from what I'm reading and I haven't been able to apply what I'm reading to my life like the rest of you all. Perhaps I'm just not comprehending what I'm reading. I do know that sometimes I can't explain what I read even when I read another book besides the Bible.
One thing I did notice for the first time was that Joshua was told to take off his shoes because the ground he was standing on was Holy ground (5:15). It made me think about how God told Moses the same thing in Exodus.

Right now I'm discouraged in D.C.

Hi Everyone,

G&P it is nice to be missed :) I have been trying to get caught up with things here at home and errands yesterday and today. I have been reading and watching the video but just have not been able to comment and read what all you have to say. I went back and posted at the end of yesterday's comments as well about Rahab and some notes from my NIV Bible that I read last year about her. They are awesome if you have time to go read that everyone.

Michelle, About Me, Jacque I am praying for your mentioned requests. I was thinking as I was reading these about starting to post our prayer requests on a side bar on my blog. Is that something you guys want me to do? It would keep them all together for us to look at and pray. Just let me know, I don't mind doing that and you can even email me personally and I will get them added on there. I am currently praying right now about next fall and what God is going to ask me to lay down when I start back to school. I am going to finish up my teacher certification I started years ago and I learned from Melanie Chitwood at "She Speaks" that when you add something in you always take something away. I feel very strongly that God wants me to keep the blog going for our group. We are seeing things happen that have been shared and God is hearing us.

Tara, good to hear from you! Welcome to the comments :)

G&P I love what you said about us being a royal priesthood leading our families. That was really good.

Ok Morgen you had me cracking up today with your comment about writing the word circumcise. I was LOL when I read that!

I say "ya sure, you betcha!" on this Joshua challenge. I don't watch TV at night because I go to bed early, but I do get on the computer while John and Will are playing after dinner before Will's bedtime. I am going to give up the computer for the evening after John gets home. Before I even listened to the vlog today I was thinking about what God is also asking me to do to consecrate myself. He placed this on my heart actually over the weekend when I was reading and praying. I have been praying for John, as you all know, alot and very intensely for the past few months. Will is also very burdened for his dad right now. I wrote today on my blog about God leading me to study the life of Paul through Beth Moore's "To Live As Christ" for the next 9 weeks till Will gets out of school. As I asked God how HE wants me to be praying for John the life of Paul kept coming up in devos and I just felt God lead me to Acts over the weekend. I got the study and am going to begin it tomorrow. Along with this God has asked me to fast from chocolate. You all know my struggles with my weight and my health. I have found as long as I just stay away from gluten I do fine with my sinus issues. I think that is the root and underlying cause of all my sickness the past few years and I seem to be fine as long as I don't eat the bread and pasta. Not eating those things though has made my weight go way down. I was eating chocolate again because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Well, God laid on my heart to fast from all chocolate until John is saved. I started Sunday and have not had any the past three days. I am consecrating myself, setting myself apart as holy. I am dedicating myself the do what the Lord has asked so I can see his wonders among us. I also wrote about our group doing a corporate fast on my blog post for tomorrow for our unsaved loved ones. If you want to join me in that click over there tomorrow and read the post. There is so much power when we join together in fasting for God to show His power. We have been chosen for such a time as this!

continued on next post...

continued...whew, I did not realize I typed so much today :)

Lori mentioned Beth Moore and "Believing God" and Gilgal. That lesson in her study is awesome! If I have time I will get my book out and post about it. I am trying to get most of the things done around the house today so I can spend a lot of time tomorrow in Bible study. It will probably be tomorrow before I can go over those notes and write out what it says. I will post it on tomorrow's comments for you all to read.

Well, I have to get off here and finish mopping floors and the mountain of ironing before getting Will from school.

Love you GIGs!

Jennifer Renee don't be discouraged. You actually got a nugget today w/c is that God told Joshua the same thing He did w the burning bush. Maybe that's what He says when He gives someone an assignment. I encourage you to look into e-sword or blue letter bible and explore some commentaries there. Check out Lysa TerKeurst's post fr a few weeks back about prepping our hearts and asking God to open our eyes before reading. There are nuggets just for you, you will find them.

Brandee when you're tempted to eat chocolate just ask yourself: What do I want more? This chocolate which will go straight to my thighs or John's salvation? Chocolate is good but his salvation is ternally much better. Hang in there sister, you can do it!

Wendy, I love the Joshua Challenge! Count me in!

Brandee, I looked for more info on your blog about the prayer fast you want to do, and I missed it. Do you mean fasting from chocolate or something for us all to do together? Confused but willing ....

Welcome, Tara and Mrs. Jennifer!

Karen, I loved the information about the crossing of the Jordan. I don't remember ever hearing about that before! Why doesn't someone make a movie about the 'parting of the Jordan?'

Ahh, someone's awake! I'm off ...

Wow guys and girls! You all jumped in with gusto today!

I too am reading all of this for the first time, although I am very vaguely familiar with the story of Jericho, I had never actually read it, I probably remember some cartoon of it from my childhood.

SO, a few things that stood out to me today were:
Joshua's encounter with God's Commander. He was going ahead to scout out the Canaanite camp, and lo-and-behold, he ran into an angel. Proof of a couple things - God is upholding his promise to go ahead of Isreal and ensure their victory, Joshua didn't NEED to scout it out. Also, when the Commander said he was neither friend nor foe I was a little confused, but my study bible mentioned that this was to sort of put Joshua and the Isrealites in their place; God wasn't fighting on THEIR side, rather THEY are fighting GOD'S battles! And that the armies of heaven are included in their army. Nice!

The other thing that stood out to me was the last verse in Ch 6 - that "the Lord was with Joshua and his reputation spread throughout the land", my NIV version says "his fame". My pastor often says For Jesus' Fame when closing prayers, this all just resonated with me today in the spiritual high of reading of this first victory - what do I do FOR JESUS' FAME? Who's battles am I fighting and in the end, who does it glorify?

Wendy, I like the idea of ending my day with that prayer. When one of the ladies above pointed out that the Isrealites were silent while they marched, I had noted it, but in reading it again in the comments, it hit me as an addition to your challenge - To be listening for God's voice while marching into battle. It is so hard to be silent/still, especially when preparing for or going into tough or uncomfortable or uncertain situations. I feel like I trailed off there... but oh well :)

Kristin, I am 27, and so so SO grateful that He reached into my life at the exact moment he did and that I now am blessed to live the rest of it with Him by my side. I pray for both of our future Jesus-filled-husbands quite frequently as I lift up the ones we already know by name :)

Bless you all, and lifting you all up in prayer as I read the struggles mentioned - sorry I don't list it all, but God knows :)

Jennifer Renee...You are not dumb. Here is a hug. Don't be too hard on yourself. Stick with us girl. If you ever have a question...please just ask. I went through all of my school years this way. I never understood anything I read. Never would ask questions...because afraid the class would laugh and make fun of me. Today for me I still find if something isn't interesting to me...I find my mind wandering and will have to reread and reread.

Hang in there girl...There is a prayer I say before opening his word:

Before you starting your daily readings, begin with prayer. Otherwise, we are treating the Bible as if it was only a human document. The God who gave us Sacred Scripture must open our understanding to comprehend it, and our wills to believe it — and to obey it.

I like the prayer of St. John Chrysostom:

O Lord Jesus Christ, open the eyes of my heart that I may hear your word,
and understand and do your will, for I am a sojourner upon the Earth.
Hide not your commandments from me, but open my eyes, that I may perceive the wonders of your Law.

Speak unto me the hidden and secret things of your wisdom
.
On you do I set my hope, O my God, that you shall enlighten my mind and understanding with the light of your knowledge; not only to cherish those things which are written, but to do them;

That in reading the lives and sayings of the Saints I may not sin, but that such may serve for my restoration, enlightenment and sanctification, for the salvation of my soul, and the inheritance of life everlasting.

For you are the enlightenment of those who lie in darkness, and from you comes every good deed and every gift…..Amen.

I'll be Praying for you.

Brandee...I so much have John in my prayers... for Him to be beside you and Will...God Bless YOU!!

Gosh I have to get going. Holy cow!! Rhonda look at the time. Have to get supper going for the hungry young men.

Hang in there everyone!!

Oh Ladies, this may be a record for me and don't worry I'm only home for a sec. and then I will be gone for the rest of the day. This is my last post, I promise.

Jennifer, in D.C. my heart goes out to you and I am thankful for your honesty. I would love to see you post everyday for the next couple of weeks. Satan is telling you lies. Before you begin reading, pray, "Dear Lord, speak to me. Control my thoughts so I am not distracted. Open up something to me that you want me to know. Faithfully, I will read your word and wait for you to speak. I want to know you more. Let me know if there is something dividing us. I want our communication open where I can hear you. Thank you for your precious Word. I love you with all of my heart and so want to know you more."

God will reveal himself to you. Talk to him throughout the day also. Keep reading all of the posts, as you will get wisdom from the ladies here on Wendy's blog. God drew you to this blog for a reason. He wants a close relationship with you, Jennifer!

Yes, like G. & P. said, we need to take that step of faith. Our church does not do 'lent' but, through listening to you all, I was lead to begin at the beginning...It was very difficult the first week and even the second, (I can't tell you how my mind wanted to talk me out of it) but,I have found how much closer I have been to Him, since I have been diligent, 100%. My thoughts are much more focused on Him throughout the day. When we have a plan and we turn it over to God, he will give us success.

Funny thing is tho, as much as I believe him, I really was just stepping out that 10% that Dixie was talking about. After listening to you today, wendy, and thinking on it a couple of hours after that...we not only have to believe...but we have to talk like we believe. We have to "see" that it has happened, maybe not for our eyes to see, but God hears us and is working in all of our lives for good, in His timing. I don't know if this makes sense, but the light bulb has gone off in my mind. For the past several weeks he has been opening so much up to me. We can't let whatever is holding us back remain an idol. We have to let go, and let God take over. He's waiting to bless us. Obedience ladies & quiet gent's.

okay, now off to jot down prayer requests and, finish up last night's posts that I missed... then, I've got to get going!!!

I'm not sure where it came from, but...it has been raining ALL day long here in AZ! It started at 4:00 a.m. and of course I washed my car yesterday-yikes, it never rains...but, it's divine!

Blessings, Lori
PS Love your praying idea, Brandee.

Old: Joshua 3:1-17. The Priests had to step into the water with the Ark in order for the riverbed to become dry. They stood in the middle of the river until everyone else had crossed the Jordan. That had to have taken HOURS and been exhausting! The rest of the nation demonstrated their faith by walking into the dry riverbed. The Priests demonstrated their faith by stepping into flood waters and standing in the middle until all of God's commands were accomplished.

New: Joshua 4:19, 5:2-12. Gilgal was the location for the 12 Stones of Remembrance and for the Circumcision. Interesting that the circumcision is AFTER they cross when they are more vulnerable to their enemies.

Do: Exercise faith to step out into the "flood waters" and stand in the middle while others in my life use their faith.

Jennifer Renee, please don't feel discouraged or compare yourself to others on here! I didn't "see" what most of these ladies (and Wendy) saw and that's ok. Because God had something different for me and used them to teach me.

I don't know what you do when you read but here's my process. Maybe it will help you.

I read during nap time at my house (kids 16 months - 6 years) because that's when it's quiet. No tv. No music. Just silence. I have a pencil highlighter in yellow. Each time a phrase or sentence jumps out at me or makes me go "hmmmm" I highlight it yellow.

After I've read the whole passage I go back and read the yellow parts. Then I write down a couple of those parts in my notebook and think about them.

The application comes as I think about the meaningful phrases. Today was noticing all the Israelites demonstrated faith but it was different for those priests carrying the ark. Now I'm praying about how God wants me to step out for him like the priests.

I hope that helps!

Hi all,

Well I am a social blogger here, I read the posts everyday just don't always post any comments.

FIrst of all, To Jennifer Renee - I have to tell you this. When I first started reading the word and participating in this study I really struggled with understanding and pulling a nugget of my own out of the reading. Until recently when I really started praying and asking God to show me a nugget of truth. I pray each time before I read his word that he would show me something that I need/could apply to my life. And now I can honestly tell you that most days I find my nugget but there are still days I don't find it until I view the vlog - that is when something Wendy says leaps out at me.
Jennifer - please don't feel discouraged! Don't let the devil win! I added you to my pray list! :)

Now for today - I accept the challenge!!!! I am excited to see what wonders the Lord has in store for myself, my family, my friends, and my church! I know that with God on my side I can overcome my weaknesses for his glory! I also will be setting aside 30 min each night for some time quiet time with the Lord. I want to hear MORE of his voice and I want MORE of his guidance and direction for my life. I decided recently that it wasn't my decisions anymore it was his. I am trusting and believing him to guide and direct my life and my family! And what a way to start!!! This challenge!!
Im excited!

I will be praying for everyone!
In his love,
Amanda

Hi everyone!
Wow, today's reading was wonderful. This is all new to me as well, although I did know about the Walls of Jericho.
Wendy, count me in on that challenge! I am anticipating seeing how God moves.
I loved the verses about the twelve stones and using them as a memorial. Is this where I've heard about the stones of remembrance? I never knew that the stones that Joshua set up in the middle of the Jordan are there to this day. In his commentary, David Guzik writes:
"c. That this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come: The purpose of this memorial was so that the people of Israel could teach their children about the great things God had done, so that the work of God would not be forgotten among the generations.

i. We often fail in our trust of God because we forget the great things He has done, and often the faith of our children is weak because they have never been told how great God is and how real His working is in our lives.

d. Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan: Joshua also set up a pile of memorial stones in the very bed of the river Jordan, so that when it was lowered in a season of drought, those stones could be seen and would testify of the time that God had completely dried up the Jordan.

i. Especially in a time of drought, we need to remember the great things God has done."

I am learning so much from all of ya'll and even though I don't post everyday, I enjoy reading everyone else's posts.

Hope everyone has a blessed day!

Hi - and I said I wasn't going to write until the weekend....What do you do when you are offered a Joshua challenge?

On Tuesdays I go to an assisted living/nursing home to spend some time singing, doing crafts, doing trivia, etc. I have been doing this about 5-6 years - I have lost track. Usually for Easter I would have them color bunnies, try on hats or something like that. I read Wendy's vlog today before I made the very short drive there. On that ride, I decided (or God challenged me!) to step out of my 10% comfort zone and push some limits. So upon arrival I asked the people in charge if I could conduct Palm Sunday service on next Tuesday and Easter service the following Tuesday. Their response was a resounding yes!

Now I am like Moses was in the beginning. I have never in my life spoken to a church group. I have always been a follower, not a leader. I am new to this study of the Bible. I am President of the off-key club, really! I'll tell you about that sometime! But I will pray and prepare every night until next Tuesday and will do it!!!!!!

Most of these people have some degree of Alzheimers. Will you pray with me that God will go into them and rekindle all those things they learned in their Christian lives and reassure them of His love and Promised Land? If you can do more -( remember Aaron helped Moses) you could send an email to me with your blessings and love for them and I will read it to them. Their names are - Delores from Alabama (a former piano teacher) and severe Alzheimers, Roberta (Bertie from Kentucky) fairly good memory but says she is a "simple woman", John from Chicago, 89, and has all his wits - reads a book a day plus newspapers and magazines, Evelyn from Rochester, N.Y. (needs to exercise a little patience with those who ask the same questions 1,000 times), Emory from Wash.D.C. , a former FBI agent with almost total Alzheimers - knows his name and loves his Mickey Mouse Watch, Elizabeth (almost totally blind and was a seamstress) Anna who seems to be losing herself a little more each week, and Blanche, the youngest and feeling she doesn't "belong" and for the wonderful owners Yolette and Marcial who love each and everyone of them. Also the help - Jacqueline from Haiti who lost relatives there in the earthquake. Come on my Aarons and help this reluctant Moses with her Joshua challenge.

To the GIG who can't find the "nuggets". I don't always either. You will notice I quote others. Also every day I go to Jon Courson's site. He has almost an hour sermon on every chapter of the Bible. Some people learn better by listening. It takes a lot of time but well, well worth it for me. I was led there by Grace & Peace mentioning him. Hang in there and if you feel you are slipping, tie another knot and hang on. Use us as those knots...

My website for emails if you wish is Dixie0907@aol.com.

God loves you and so do I GIGs.

P.S. I forgot Verne whose 95 year old wife can't tend to his needs anymore because of his Alzheimers.

This is the first time I have posted a comment. I have been on board since the beginning of the year but was timid to respond. Everyone's spiritual journey has been a blessing to learn...I hope I can become closer to God and hear his voice like many of you have. I too want to take the challenge and see the great wonders the Lord can do in my life and those I love. Your posts have been a blessing to me and Wendy's teachings have been amazing. Wow, what an awesome bunch of comments today!

Tara, Anonymous and Mrs. Jennifer - welcome. Great to hear from you :)

Thank you to so many of you for prayers for Denise---Sara, Lori, G&P, Sue, Jacque, Brandee, Amanda and all you others. They did not do the heart procedure today because SOMEONE decided one more test was needed to make sure this was safe enough. Do you, like me, think our prayers caused an intervention? We'll see if they reschedule it for tomorrow, with new info from today's test.

Jennifer Renee, don't give up. It takes time!

Husband of 32 years and I are headed out to dinner for his 57th birthday. A cozy little restaurant where the birthday person eats for free. Can't beat that.

Thanks again, everybody.

Wow! I am overwhelmed reading comments at 9:00 at night... What a GREAT day of thought. I wish I could do a huge lists of names and thoughts directly to each of you, but I'm going to share a funny story instead. I have 2 young daughters (just turned 7 and 3 1/2) and we were given a children's Bible by my wonderful MIL for Christmas this year. It's called The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name by Sally Lloyd-Jones. I HIGHLY recommend it for those of you with children or grandchildren. Each OT story talks at the end of "another rescuer" who would be coming soon to rescue the world, etc. etc. It is FABULOUS!! Anyway - tonight we were reading the part where Jesus is taken up to heaven and sends his Holy Spirit to earth. The girls had a thousand questions about how does Jesus live in our hearts? 7 year old wants to know if he's wearing his "Biblical" clothes, 3 year old wants to know how he got in her body, the questions just went on and on and I was cracking up on the inside while we just talked and talked and imagined answers to all of these innocent little questions.

To all of you who have said encouraging words to us moms of young children - THANK YOU! Your words have touched my heart and made me much more aware of sharing my faith more openly w/ my girls.

Finally - the challenge - I am excited about it, but let me tell you that I am NERVOUS. I think God is leading me to give up sweets - or at least cut them back - as I am such a dessert-lover! I have tried to cut back to one a day but the darn girl scout cookies that I have hidden in a cabinet in my classroom have really gotten me lately. So, I want to accept the challenge, but I am scared already of failure. And desserts is such a stupid, little thing in my opinion. I know, I know - God calls for obedience in the small things as well as the big. I'd love accountability in this - so I'm actually writing it in my post. No dessert until Easter. I will be shocked if I follow through on this... Any words of wisdom?

Thank you to all - have a great night!

Your comments have been awesome today. Thanks everyone. Jennifer Renee, you aren't by yourself is struggling to find nuggets. i, too have been having a difficult time. I have been asking the Lord to show me how it applies to me TODAY. To open my eyes of understanding. I have found that if I will stop after each section and think about just those verses, I can usually come up with a comment about it.

G & P thanks for remembering that I had a house full. I was able to keep up with my reading, but that was about all. They all left yesterday morning. It was hard with so many (5) kids in the house. They seemed to explode into action at times...running through the house and screaming. The next time they come there will be some ground rules laid down. They were very polite, all of them saying thank you for the meals, etc. I am just not used to so much noise. I let them know up front that on Monday's I drive 2 hours to my daughter's house and stay with my 17 mo. old granddaughter (such a chore :) ) so my daughter can go to a Bible study herself. Needless to say this is the highlight of my week. I love being a grandma.

Could someone tell me what Wendy's challenge is??? I am not able to view her videos because of a very slow dial-up on my computer. What am I missing???

Welcome to all the newbies...glad you have come aboard...join the journey of drawing closer to the Lord.

Jan - in her vlog, Wendy challenged us to pray the Joshua 3:5 verse over ourselves each night, and to set ourselves apart for His glory from now until Easter.
We are to look for and expect His wonders among us - (maybe God has challenged us to give up a TV show, or something specific we cling to instead of Him - this would be the purifying part of the verse). Let's watch Him work!

I personally have given up Facebook for Lent - I haven't even cheated once! And you know what? I have not missed it, it has freed up time for me to be with God more, and my hubby even commented a couple days ago that he has liked the fact I am spending more time visiting with him, cooking supper together, etc...than sitting on the computer.
Also, after reading Dixie's "Aaron challenge" to us all, God spoke to my heart and layed it on me to be a beacon of encouragement these next days - to lift up everyday with encouraging words those I encounter. I'm excited!
Join us Jan!

Hey Jennifer Renee I don't know if you will even see this but here goes. Before I start my bible reading I have two scripture quotes (written at the front of my journal) I pray; Psalm 119:18 'Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law'(Word) & Deuteronomy 29:29 "There are secrets the Lord your God has not revealed to us, but these words which He has revealed are for us & our children to obey forever" I ask God for His wisdom & grace to understand His Words. When I don't or can't find a nugget I just praise Him for allowing me to read His word. That is my nugget for that day.
Praying this helps. Never give up just take one step at a time.

Hi everyone...catching up on reading the comments. I really enjoy them and pray for you guys as I read along.

Dixie...thank you so much for your ministry to Azheimers patients. My sweet mother-in-law will be there soon. My husband and his siblings need lots of prayer as they need to make those hard decisions in the coming months.

The verses that stuck out to me in this day's reading was Joshua 3:8...When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, GO AND STAND IN HE RIVER." The river during this time would have been at full crest. As a non-swimmer, I cannot imagine walking up to a raging river and putting my foot into it. But what the priests put their FAITH INTO ACTION. That is something that I need to do more.

Another verse was Joshua 3:16...So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. Wendy commented that she wondered how long it took them. I envision moms pulling their children along and fathers running ahead of their families waving for them to hurry it up ya'll!

This was a new generation who had been circumcised (yes I chucked when I typed that). God had prepared them and they were ready.

I accept the Joshua challenge and have written that verse on a post-it and will put it on my night stand to pray before I go to bed.

Blessings from
Louisville, KY
