Hi Friends
I am in Clintwood, VA this weekend. We are talking about a having a balanced life: what is and what is not a balanced life. We are learning when to say yes, no, and maybe to achieve and maintain balance in our lives.
As I teach this, my laundry room is so full I can barely walk in. The carpet in my house need vacuuming, etc. Balance is not achieved by a clean house or pretty lawn. It is achieved by putting Jesus first, something I strive to do everyday.
More of your Lord, less of me.
Ya'll have a great weekend! Love you all and appreciate our class so much!

Have a blessed time there, Wendy! This is a word in due season for me. I have not finished the homework from my studies. Instead I sat with DH and watched some of Elaine Page's old concert and the ones with Susan Boyle. I can hear Josh Groban singing so I'm going to log off and join DH downstairs. Balance, right? The homework will write itself somehow.
Debbie, my heart broke for your Ashley. Praying that she gets well.
(((HUGS)))
Balance is something I need more of! Would love to hear you speak - about anything - but this is definitely something I need to hear. I hope you come somewhere close to me soon!
I'm back! Last night was way too short. We're busy getting ready for my canning party tonight and to go see Sesame Live this morning. There's a lot to clean up when you're in the midst of minor construction!
While I liked Proverbs, I liked getting back into the story-like aspect of the Bible this morning. Knowing how the pieces of our history fit together makes me feel like I understand better the events that I see happening around me now.
Lots was new. My brain wasn't functioning very well at this time last year and I had trouble focusing on our reading - ended up missing weeks at a time - but lots jumped out at me today.
1 Kings 11:6 It can be scary to chase after God wholeheartedly, and as Christians maybe we chalk fear up to being an 'acceptable' sin, but it's not - anything less than pursuing God with our whole hearts is evil.
1 Kings 11:1-10 If Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines and built altars for all of their foreign gods, then he personally fathered an entire generation who grew up believing that it is acceptable to compromise one's personal belief system AND that worshipping multiple gods is okay. No wonder Israel got into so much trouble in the coming years! It wasn't just Solomon who strayed - but maybe his entire household. If each wife-lady had only two children, that would be 2000 future household-families who may grow up to do the same thing. Don't our children ultimately - I don't mean when finding their way, but eventually - end up doing what they see us do??
And 700 wives of royal birth - where did all of these royal families come from? Seems like everybody must have either been royal or had a royal connection!
1 Kings 11:21 Why do people keep asking the Pharoah's permission to go home?
Ecc. 1:9 I didn't know that Solomon said this.
I read Ecclesiastes last year, but it scared me. I remember that it seemed so bleak and hopeless. The first few verses did not seem any better to me today. I'm looking forward to seeing what all of you share about it as we read along! You have all taught me so much, not just about specific Bible knowledge, but also about how to apply it. You're wonderful!
Have a happy Saturday!
Amy
Wow...What Wendy wrote this morning about what balance is really spoke to my heart. I think we as women, and I am talking about myself, put so much pressure on ourselves to be super mom and super wife and we try to do it all...a lot of the time with out stopping and asking Jesus for help. I think a lot of the time if I would make sure I put Jesus first (which I am working on) that everything else will fall into place. I don't think God will ask us when we get to Heaven why our house wasn't always clean or our laundry done and I don't want my children growing up saying Wow, my mom kept a great house but I don't remember her taking the time to spend time with me.
Anyway, it really spoke to me and I needed that this morning. Thank you Wendy. I am going to ask God to help me balance the things in my life and quit putting all the unimportant things before Him.
Have a great weekend everyone!! It's raining here in Iowa and supposed to continue all day.
Good morning, GIG's,
For those of you hurting this weekend over wayward children, I prayed this morning that today would be a day in which they would take a step or two in the right direction - just today - and that tomorrow they would do the same.
Thinking about Wendy in VA this morning led me to review my notes from the wonderful teaching she did on Nehemiah when I saw her in person in April. Our wordnerd told us that SAP, which she and now we have been using as Stop and Pray, actually means "energy and vitality to live and grow", and isn't that just what we do when we share our needs here, and ask for - or give - needed prayer.
Lori, thank you for your words yesterday, which keep ringing in my head and heart, that our Lord may feel that rain is the better forecast for my daughter's wedding tomorrow. He does work in mysterious ways, usually to build our character, and He is doing that right now in my household. Thank you, Lord.
May you all have a blessed weekend, and I will "see" you Monday in my new role as a mother of a married woman, and mother-in-law to a wonderful young man. Thank you for your prayers for my family, friends. I would especially covet your prayers for safe travel through the rain for all, and calmness and peace for all.
Peace and Gratitude,
Michelle in, sigh, rainy New England
Happy Saturday,
I am praying for all. May our Lord bless each & everyone with grace & wisdom as we walk this journey call life!
The following is one of several books that Ruth Graham wrote. It doesn't give the 'what to do' but does give inspiration on dealing & praying over our children. 'Prodigals and Those Who Love Them: Words of Encouragement for Those Who Wait' by Ruth Bell Graham. The Graham family have written many books that are a blessing & help in times of struggles & triumphs.
Most of Ecclesiastes used to depresses me. However, now I see it that without God all is lost. HE remembers me, HE knows my thoughts & cares about me. So humans are human, we have faults & fail but the glory of my God goes on forever! One day, I will sit at the feet of my LORD & learn all the things that truly matter! This is a comforting thought!
Enjoy & rejoice in this day the Lord has made.
Blessings & Peace, Mary
Mary - that is EXACTLY what I got from Ecclesiastes too. That life without God has no meaning what so ever. An empty nothingness.
Michelle...have a blessed weekend. I pray that the Holy Spirit will be so present at the wedding that people will be inspired.
Busy day today...my niece's baby shower and another graduation reception to go to...plus sneaking in some grocery shopping and chores. Did someone say "balance"? haha
Praise Him...
Morgen
Good morning,
Thank you Mary for the book suggestion. I'll look for it.
Balance is a constant thing. I am a person who wants to be ahead of things, so if I'm not, I feel behind. In reality, I'm on time. However, the first time in years, last week, my hubby's jeans were not washed for work. I got on it, girl friends. (He was nice about it.)
I'm having a hard time keeping up with this schedule of readings and my new blog. I haven't even cracked the book for our women's study at church Sunday. Hmmm. Time to prioritize, Lord. What's Your will?
Did we make it through the Songs? It was different.
I'm off to walk. After 4 months of down time due to health issues, it is hard to keep up the exercise.
I used it as my prayer and praise time with the Lord.
It's time to walk with Him.
See ya'll Monday.
Have a good weekend.
Linda
Wow, I slept in today! I can already tell, I will be staying up a bit later this summer!
Balance! I my goodness, ladies we could sure sip over coffee talking about this all morning long! God as our focus, and relationships are so much more important than all the other stuff (that is necessary,) but for some reason takes up so much of our energy.
Amy, you just make me smile – you always take me back to when my teenagers were little. Aahh, I remember Dave and I going to BARNEY live! The things we do for out children! Canning? What are you canning?
Oh my goodness, Michelle, tomorrow IS the day! I can’t believe it! May God’s love enfold you and fill your heart with peace. “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” Romans (5:5). Regardless of any circumstances that may be present, you will have God’s infinite love, surrounding you and lifting you up all weekend long. May you enjoy this weekend and be full of His peace, as your daughter joins your future SIL. Anticipate your Father, He will be there, too - along with sweet Denise! PTL smile!!!Hugs, to you, beautiful, mother of the bride!
Praying for Michael, Ryan, Dylan, Ashley, and Ryan.
700 wives. 300 concubines. (I Kings 11:3) It seems that this man is easily bored! And then, after he had everything he could ever possibly want, near his death he announces, “Everything is meaningless…completely meaningless” (Ecc. 1:2). “No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content” (8). This man who had more wisdom than anyone, allowed his self-pleasures to draw him away from the Lord. It’s so easy to allow our “stuff” to erase God from our day. We are here on earth for a blink of an eye; we are with our Savior for eternity. The enemy does his best to get us to crowd God out of our life. If he can’t do it with us, then he goes after the people that are special to us. Thank you, Lord, that you always are there for us to turn to.
Lord, I don’t want anything to crowd you out, now or ever. Wealth. Fame. None of it is important to you. I so bad want my life to be centered on furthering your kingdom. Increase my desire for those around me to be saved. Equip me with your Word, so that I can easily share your goodness. Increase my desire to know you more, even more! I want you everywhere inside me. Help me share your love to those around me, in a way that is receptive to their ears. Lord, open my eyes so that I’m walking in your will for me today. Take my hand and I will follow you to the end of my day. Lord, I love you more than I ever thought I could. Increase my love till there is only love inside me.
In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Enjoy His presence today! Thank you, Lord, you are always with us! Lori
My pastor, in Bible study, and our Sunday school class has studied the books of 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles. Amazingly I remember some of what today's reading was about and what is going to happen with the tribes.
My old
I knew that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). I also knew that the tribes of Israel were given to Jeroboam except for one tribe which was given to Solomon's son Rehoboam (1 Kings 11:11-13; 29-32). I know which tribe Rehoboam got but I won't say in case there's someone who doesn't know. I don't want to give the story away.
I knew that Solomon’s foreign wives turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God (1 Kings 4-6; 33).
My new
I had forgotten and was reminded that God took the Kingdom from Solomon because he did not keep God's covenant and he disobeyed God's decrees (1 Kings 11:9-11; 33)
My to look forward to
I don't remember what happened to the twelf tribe. I believe that tribe was split between Jeroboam and Rehoboam but I don't remember which tribe it was.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I'm looking forward to church tomorrow. Smile Michelle from VA.
Hi Wendy and everybody!
I am new to this blog/study. Just
started about 6 weeks ago. I am a 53 year old wife of 27 years and mom to three, and two grandbabies. My daughters are 26 and 24 (she is the momma) and my son is almost 12. He was a wonderful surprise at age 41!!
I am leaving today for a wedding, and I can relate to Wendy about leaving "chores" behind and trying not to focus on them.
I live in Western NY, and it is muggy and I do not like the hot weather, because all I do is sweat - yuk! Trying to get all dressed up and stay cool - not easy! (The wedding is for a niece and about a two hour drive through the Finger Lakes)
Also, wanted to mention I can also relate to Amy's comment on Solomon - that is exactly what is going through my mind. And, also to Michelle, up there in New England. Looks like a stormy day today in the Northeast. And, I, too have been blessed with a wonderful son-in-law.
I do so much appreciate this Bible Study. Ironically, I did start on my own the beginning the year, so I was pretty much on the same page.
May God give y'all peace this week-end!
Rhonda in NY State
Friends, I have to share this with you.
Woohoo!! I just got a package in the mail. It's my first birthday present. My birthday is on Tuesday as I've already shared. It's from my three best friends, Holly, Karen, and my Spiritual mom, whose name is also Karen. They sent me a pillow that says "A friend loves at all times" Proverbs 17:17. Holly emailed me either on Thursday or yesterday and told me what my gift was but I'm still about to cry. Holly also bought one of these pillows for my Spiritual mom for her birthday. Holly didn't tell her that this pillow is what she got to give me from the three of them. Holly also sent me a beautiful card that looks hand made that has two bows, a star and two little flowers on it that I can feel. It looks like she bought it while she and her husband were in Vietnam. She sent me a hand made card while they were in Vietnam and that one has a heart on it that I can feel. Holly also sent me a heart shaped box and bracelet in a satiny bag that she got while she was in Vietnam. I love hearts. Some people love rainbows or butterflies or other things but I really love angels and hearts. I love hearts because it stands for love.
I'm sorry I'm going on about this. My heart is just so filled up with love right now.
My thought today ---if the wisest man ever (and he saw God twice!)can be led astray and fall into such deep depression and lose sight of everything that is important...I better keep my sights on Jesus at all times, every day and follow him wholeheartedly! I am thankful that we have God's word to help us to keep us on His, His Holy Spirit and the stories of the men and women of faith that have gone before us. And so thankful for all of your insights and nuggets!
Jennifer Renee, a cyber hug and smile for you today! Real one tomorrow
Michelle, blessings to you for the big day tomorrow! Much happiness, love and God's blessings for your daughter and new son-in-law! May they walk with Him always.
Wendy, praying for you and the women's retreat. Great topic---I pray the women will be blessed mightily and be prepared to serve Him and glorify Him even more.
In Him,
Michelle in VA
Today we read Ecclesiastes 3 and I've been looking forward to sharing the following song. The words in this song are from the KJV, however, the sequence of the words were rearranged for the song.

What's up with Ecclesiastes?? JR - love that Byrds song... Michelle - thinking of you today. May God bless everything about this day for you and your family. Where is your daughter going on the honeymoon? How exciting! I hope that one of you will jump into the comments with some commentary on this book as I found it to be a real downer. It's like Eeyore penned a book in the bible. Y'all have a wonderful Sunday!
Kate in VA
I do agree that these chapters of Ecclesiastes are a little depressing.
Today I will be camping out on Ecclesiastes 5:4
When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.
We should also try to keep the promises we make to each other as well. Although sometimes situations come up where we can't keep our promises to each other and we should understand of that and not get all bent out of shape.
Lord, in the name of Jesus, help me to keep all the promises I make to you. Help me to fulfill each promise to the best of my ability. Lord, help me to keep any promise I make to others.
Good Morning,
Kate in VA thanks for the laugh & truth about Ecclesiastes being like Eeyore!!
Jennifer Renee great song!
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 seasons of life. I love this scripture it reminds me that the bad will not last & to enjoy the good when they are here.
I think that Solomon wasn't a happy man, wise but not happy or content. This might be why he had so many wives. He was looking for love in all of the wrong places.
What I get from this reading is when I was a child, teenager, young adult, new mom the things that were important at the time, the things I worried about at the time seem silly now. I am sure the things that concern me now as a 55 year old women, wife, mother, friend will seem silly when I [God willing] am 90 years old. What really matters is God & my relationship with Him. All others things are small compared to Him & that relationship. Another thing that is important [in my mind] is how we treated & showed others the love of our mighty God.
My to do; is to find contentment & joy wherever I am in my journey of life.
Lord help me, guide me & pour out Your wisdom on me. Thank You LORD for answered prayer!
Enjoy your Sunday!
Blessings & Peace, Mary
Ecc 5:1 As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut.
Things I will ponder today. Take more time to be silent before God. He already knows my needs, so I need to keep my ears open to hear Him. Trust Him for He is supreme, above all. Stop questioning situations that seem unfair or wrong, but let God work on me. Stop trying to figure out what God is doing or not doing. Just trust Him. Phil 4:6-7 I will not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present my requests to God. And the peace of God will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.
I am continuing to pray for everyone's needs here on this blog. And Wendy, have a safe trip. I keep hoping you will get up this way one day.

Amy, I’ve been doing the prayers each day from Stormie’s book; today’s prayer –well, as I read it, Michael, Ryan, and Dylan came to mind. This is a perfect prayer, Susie, Jacque, and Franny to pray over your sons.
Lord, I pray that You would strengthen Dylan, Michael, and Ryan, to resist any temptation that comes their way. Stamp it out of their mind before it ever reaches their heart or personal experience. Lead them not into temptation, but deliver them from evils such as sex, pornography, drugs, alcohol, gambling, or perversion. Remove temptation especially in the are of (alcohol). Make them strong where they are weak. Help them to rise above anything that erects itself as a stronghold in their life. May they say, “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me” (Psalm 103:3).
Lord, You’ve said that “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls” (Prov. 25:28). I pray that each of these young men, will not be broken down by the power of evil, but raise up by the power of God. Establish a wall of protection around them. Fill them with Your Spirit and flush out all that is not of You. Help them to take charge over their own spirit and have self-control to resist anything and anyone who becomes a lure. May they “abhor” what is evil. Cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9). I pray that they will be repulsed by tempting situations. Give them courage to reject them. Teach them to walk in the Spirit so they will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Amen. (The Power of a Praying Wife, 77).
Keep praying girls! God promises to respond to our cries for divine help. The future of our children depend on our prayers to our Father!
I’m looking forward to church in a bit!
Jennifer Renee, are you seeing Michelle in VA today?!!! I’m so excited for you, two! Thank you for the link!!! I never realized the connection!!!
Hugs everyone, Lori
PS Here comes the bride…smile…my thoughts are with you sweet Michelle. I know it will be a perfect wedding! God has everything under His control. Thank you, Lord! We are all waiting for a report!
PPS Praying that you are still renewed sweet Wendy, to teach us later on today, (for tomorrow). Mercy, you've got a full plate. Praying for God to be your strength, when you feel totally weak!
This was sent to me and I would like to share this song. This is a You Tube of Wintley Phipps singing Amazing Grace. He explains the song's history first, so for those of you who already know the history, be sure to stick with it. You will never think of the song Amazing Grace the same way again after you have heard him sing it. Gives you goose bumps!! Awesome! It's beautiful! Amazing Grace just the black notes.
Enjoy!

Lori, it was exciting! My kids don't watch Sesame Street but we wont tickets to the show, so we went, and they loved the singing. :-) I also won a party pack from the Ball preserving company at www.houseparty.com, and so friends came over last night. We canned salsa and strawberry jelly and played games. It's party of a promotional thing that some companies are doing. They sent us lots of free stuff and some people who had never canned before learned how. It was fun.
Michelle, it rained on my wedding day, too - 7 years ago tomorrow! - and I was disappointed but realized that the most important part was the committment we were making to each other and not how it looked. Now we tell others about how Dave carried me through the rain to take pictures at the one-room schoolhouse across the parking lot, and it just makes for a story - no trauma attached. I'm sure your daughter's wedding will be beautiful no matter where it happens because of the love they share.
I like the Eeyore reference! I kinda feel that way about Ecc, but this time through I think that Solomon is speaking lots of truth - he's just depressed about it. He's right - in the end nothing we do here will matter on an earthly, human level to other humans - it's all about His plan and His love. When we live out His plan and show His love, then we can make lasting differences about how our life ultimately ends and can even impact others the same way. I liked 6:10 b/c we can't choose or change the path our lives will take, exactly, and as parents we can't determine these things for our children; but if we let God show us the path He has planned, then our lives will never be gloomy as Solomon described because His purpose and love will be there.
After yesterday's excitement, I'm happy about having a calm day today! It's not rainy here but to be 95 and sticky. I'm heading out to our little wading pool with the kids!
Wendy
God has been dealing with me about balance for a couple of years now. You are so right - putting Jesus first is the only way to get there.
Welcome home!
Welcome Rhonda! You will grow to love this blog and all the insight and information you will learn. As Wendy said do what you can and don't beat yourself up on what you didn't do, in the end you still made it through the bible and grew in your walk with the Lord.
I just can't say enough of how I have enjoyed what each of you have shared. I find myself reading this bible all the time especially when my boys are playing outside. I love that it is chronological and the version makes sense to me. I am growing to lvoe the OT more and more. THe messages are so power in wha they are trying to teach teh people of that time.
Balance~ WOW I need to learn how to be better at that. Wendy thanks for pointing out that balance is putting God first and other stuff next.
Thanks Wendy for all you do with this blog. You are being an instrument for God and touching may lives.
From Jon Courson's Applicaitons Commentary OT, Vol 2.
Background to Ecclesiastes:
"Written in the latter years of his life, the Book of Ecclesiastes is actually a journal of Solomon's journey to carnality. In Deut 17, God specifically said that when a king ascended to the throne he was not to multiply wives, horses, gold or silver to himself....
"...Solomon is known for his wisdom- yet he ends up walking the path of a fool. I point this out because where a person is strongest will very often be the place of his greatest weakness. Consider the following:
* While the world partied, Noah walked uprightly and found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Yet he fell when he became drunk in his tent. Gen 9
* In a lapse of faith, Abraham-the father of faith - had relations with Haggar that gave birth to the problems in the middle east today. Gen 16
*Rather than speak to the rock as instructed, Moses, the meekest man, struck it in anger and was barred access to the Promised Land (numbers 20)
*Peter, the one who boldly said "Though everyone else deny You, I never will," denied Jesus for fear of a servant girl. Mark 14
"Peter was a man of courage who became a coward. Moses was a meek man who, pushed to the limit, lost his temper. Noah was a man of purity who became a drunkard. Abraham was a man of faith who failed in the flesh. And here Solomon, the man of wisdom, plays the fool.
"Why?
"Because we have a tendency to keep our guard up in the areas we know we're weak. But in the area of our greatest strength, we'll depend on our own abilities and thereby become vulnerable to attack from the enemy. Where we're weak we're always praying, "Help me, Lord. Guard me. Protect me." But where we're strong that's where we'll often end up failing."
"Why was this book written? To tell us that someone has been where the average person wants to be (to have it all) - and has found it bogus, for in Ecclesiastes, we hear the lonely whine of the top dog."
Here's something to those who have lost a loved one. Eccl 3:15. He says "This is a mind blowing phrase because it gives us insight into the reality and nature of eternity. There is no past, no present, no future. That is why God declared His name to be I AM that I am. Not I was, not I will Be, but I AM - the eternal now. In 1 John 1:5 we are told God is light. What does that mean? I suggest it means that in heaven, everything is in the present "now." There is no past and no future. Could it be that those who have died and gone to heaven are already experiencing our presence with them now?"
-- end --
That last phrase gives me great comfort. In the heavenly realm, my Mom is with us now. We're together. That just blesses my heart today.
Michelle, been thinking of your daughter's wedding. Looking forward to what you have to share with us when it is all over. How timely that in our reading we see Eccl 4:9-12 which is often used in wedding ceremonies re the rope made of three pieces of hemp. The third cord that is in the middle to strengthen the two outer cords is the Lord Jesus. Blessings to the newlyweds!
Jennifer Renee, how sweet that you received your presents early. May you continue to be blessed.
Have a blessed, balanced day everyone.
Michelle, I pray that
Jennifer Renee, thank you for putting the link to The Byrds. I was driving myself crazy thinking it was Simon and Garfunkel who sang the song!
I've been keeping up with the reading and have been enjoying and learning from your comments. Thank you ladies!
G & P - Thank you for the background info on Ecc - very helpful! And very powerful to think about. Yes - when everything is going well, I certainly feel strong on my own...dangerous. Michelle - can't wait to hear about the wedding!!

Hi friends!
Happy Sunday! What a glorious day. It is so good to be back and read comments. I have been keeping up with my reading, but have not been able to sit down and post comments, but I'm reading right along with you all. I'm enjoying every minute and learning so much every day. This has been an amazing experience and I'm so happy that I found Proverbs 31 and was led to Wendy.
I have loved reading Proverbs, but it has been very interesting reading today's reading. It says so much about life and the meaning of it even though Solomon believes everything is meaningless(he says only to prove this point about life). God shows us that we can find meaning in everything, whether success or tragedy.
The nugget for me was Ecclesiastes 6:9 "Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice thing is meaningless-like chasing the wind."
This is something I need to remind myself of because sometimes I fear, friends, that I tend to chase the wind at times. I want to make the most of the precious moments that God has given me on this earth and not chase the wind.
Hope ya'll are having a great weekend. Hope VA is treating you well Wendy. Thank you so much for leading us in this bible study.
Kristin- Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Wendy,
I like your focus on your relationship with God and not all the must do things we put on our list. Thanks for the refocus on what is important.
