I am thankful for the great news about Angela! Praise be! I am lifting Michelle and Jen Renee in prayer, Lord may you give them rest! Thank you G&P, Lori, Amy, Jacque for all of your insights! Jacque, I would like to sit under the vines too (but we don't have a yard here in Switzerland...:)), I will raise a glass to you and your husband later in the season as I picture your pastoral scene.
Wendy, thank you for your words on accepting Wisdom no matter the source or the package. It is definitely food for thought today. I researched the word "proverb" today and found that the Hebrew word (Mashal) means both proverb and parable.
Proverbs are simple statements, usually containing contrasts, for our edification. Parables also contain the idea of contrasts, but more by omission, and are full illustrative stories. It would seem that a proverb is a condensed parable, or may be used as the parable's moral. Solomon uses proverbs for instruction and Jesus uses parables. I liked the parallel.
Proverbs are not the promises of God per se, but they are still divinely inspired. In Jaimeson, Fausset and Brown's introduction to Proverbs, the writer writes:
In this book, however, we are supplied with a proverbial wisdom commended by the seal of divine inspiration. God has condescended to become our teacher on the practical affairs belonging to all the relations of life.

One of the things that I love about this bloggy fellowship is the exact thing that Wendy taught on today. I gain so much insight and wisdom from so many of you, and I have no idea, in most cases, how old you are, or what your work is or your "station" in life, or how you dress, etc., all that "judgy" stuff!
In today's reading, my old/new was that I have read many of the Proverbs before.
New to me: That these are not, as Karen wrote, promises of God. I kind of suspected that as I read, because, as useful as the Proverbs are, they just don't feel like the word of God to me.
My to do: Proverbs 4: 23 really spoke to me today. "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." It got me to thinking about how I had "stumbled" on Tuesday, because I didn't guard my heart. I went to the hair salon after school for a cut and color and try-out of a style for the wedding. The stylist was running late, which made me annoyed and frustrated, and I was already feeling guilty that dinner would be delayed for my family that night (because I'm kind of anal about dinner time together.) I also started to feel old and worn out compared to the gorgeous 20-something stylists all around me. Hello, insecurity!! Then, I got caught up in conversation/gossip/complaining with the stylist and other patrons. And once I started with negative comments about the wedding experience, the floodgates opened. My tired, grumpy, guilty, insecure, anxious self was just ripe for the picking by satan, and did he ever!! That night and into yesterday morning I behaved in the opposite way that I desire to behave. But because God is sooo good, and because He is never far from my mind now, I heard Him whisper, "Spend some extra time with me, Michelle." So I left my house early yesterday morning, treated myself to a big coffee from Mobil-on-the-Run, and sat in my car in a quiet, shady spot and listened to the birdsong and prayed! I prayed for myself, and for all requests on my prayer list. And, Praise the Lord, it worked! (Helped along, I know, by prayers for me from several of you and I thank you for that :) I had a fine, peaceful day at work and through the evening with my family. Peace was restored to me and, therefore, to my family and household. 'Cause if Mama's not happy, nobody's happy!
Thank you, Lord, for being so faithful and delivering on your promises. "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13.

Karen, I can't picture Basel, but I would love to see that part of Europe someday! I gave up on gardening the years that my children were born, but one of those I planted tomatoes and cucumbers in pots. They did great! You might be able to have a potted something if you have even a stoop. Just a thought. :-)
Michelle, I've thought of our group in this way, too. I love how everyone shares, regardless of age or money or whatever, and when thinking of how great it would be to meet all of you, I wonder what it would really be like? I guess we'll all get to meet someday, and then none of those issues will matter!
I underlined all the popular proverbs, the ones that we've all heard before, but some of it hit me in a new way today. About avoiding perverse and corrupt speech ... the Bible study I'm in where we're reading along with Wendy has been dealing with this. We're having issues going places verbally where we just don't need to go, and as the unofficlal leader (not sure how that happened) I'm not very good at redirecting. It's not that I don't want to - I just can't usually a word in edgewise and then don't know what to say, anyway. I think we're going to talk about that next week. I looked up 'perverse' and 'corrupt' and saw that they basically mean the same thing: anything that is evil, bad, against the norm, wicked, depraved. How does that verse from Ephesians go? We should park our minds on what is right, good, true, etc.
I also liked how fearing God is the foundation of wisdom. You can't be wise without God on your side! Worldly 'smarts' are usually opposite of God's plan for us, so the only way to be truly 'wise' is to look at God and look above our selfish desires for money, success, and popularity here and to depend on Him for guidance.
Gotta go! My little firemuff will be here any minute and I still have to dry my hair! I always get caught up in all of this! :-)

What a picture this morning of our Father's creativity-fog over the hay in the field. I have to share His answering my prayer Tuesday.
Thunder was loud, rolling in from the west. My son had hay cut in the field, letting it dry before baleing. Please, Lord let the rain pass away from this field, I asked Him. He sure did!
Just up the road it was pouring down. That evening, we got some rain, a frog strangler. Isn't He good?
Prov.3:5-6 is my altime scripture:
*trust, in whom? The LORD

*but I don't understand-He does

*why? so He can direct my path,

Prov.3:27-Don't withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. I see this as giving compliments, doing something encouraging, helping someone. I don't hear many compliments out in the world nowadays.

Right on Wendy and all other bloggers! I gain so much insight and wisdom from this group! Thank you everyone! I don't comment much but read as many comments as I can when I can!
What hit home for me is Wendy saying we shouldn't judge where our wisdom comes from! Convicted! Ouch! I am so quick to disregard what people have to say if they are "non believers" or if they can't possibly know what they are talking about. "I" know b/c "Iiiii" know what is best! Boy, that makes my stomach turn confessing but it feels good! The ironic thing is I am doing a presentation for my employees at work on listening! I have been working on it for a few weeks and everytime I do, I sense the Spirit shaking His head and saying yep, exactly WHAT SHE NEEDS to hear, if only she will listen and do as she preaches/teaches! I will be preaching to the choir on that one and as I prepare I will be more open to what I am teaching! Boy the Lord has alot of work left to do in me! Thank you, Lord for Your wisdom and Your patience with me and everyone as we seek You with all of our heart!
One thing, I would like to mention before I sign off, is we gain so much wisdom from our children and we are the ones who are to be teaching! How humbling can that be and refreshing! The Lord wants us to come to Him like a child!

Michelle, I love your story because we were able to see the Spirit nudging you as you became aware of Satan! If you had not been daily reading God's Word, maybe you might have missed His "voice." It's so good for us to stay grounded. Get's back to that firm foundation. And, even tho wisdom is everywhere...so is sin...and its color of enticement!
God and His wisdom & Satan and sin opposing each other – both desiring our attention.
Michelle, you are tucked into my prayers right up till the wedding. I can’t imagine what you are going through. My oldest (senior) is graduating this evening, and it’s an emotional time for me. A wedding, whoa, that just might put me over the edge! Change. A new beginning & letting go of the past.
I love Proverbs. I have to share with you guys something that I’ve read from two different author’s: Since there are 31 Proverbs and many times about 31 days/in a month…both author’s recommended reading a Proverb every single day, as part of our quiet time. Like, if it is May 27, then that day you’d read Proverbs 27, etc. Whatever the day of the month is, that is the particular Proverb you’d read. This would be awesome for kids too, since Proverbs give “knowledge and discernment to the young” (Proverbs 1:5). Maybe a proverb read at the dinner table.

Thank you all for your prayers! I felt so comforted by them and everything went smoothly thank God! Grace and Peace , thank you for your wonderful advice, I took my Ipod and the praise songs were soothing. Amen! I am praying for the other Gigi's requests esp Angela. Requesting for prayer and know that people are praying for you is so comforting, uplifting and encouraging!
Wendy thank you for today's vlog. Now that I am recovering from my surgery I cannot rush in and out of the house in the morning. Today I took my time in the reading and actually reread it 2-3 times!! Lord thank you for speaking to my heart through your word. The importance to fear God is the beginning of wisdom. The call of wisdom and who it is just waiting for us to be responsive to it, sometimes we just miss the mark, when we are dwelling in our own complaints or sinful ways. WOw! I loved the portion where is depicts guidance for us in Prov 3:5-8.
My golden nugget and what really ministered to me was how you achieve a fulfilled and content life when you follow the call of wisdom and understanding depicted in Prov 3:13-18. Lord knows how much I whine and complain but he is reminding me through proverbs on the importance of praying for the wisdom and understanding of His will in my Life.

You hit it squarely Michelle about gaining wisdom from each person here. I have no idea who is behind each name, but there is a wealth of knowledge and wisdom posted on here daily. And I am soaking it all up. Thank you to all who share so freely each day.
I focused on Prov 4:25-27, with respect to taking care of my temple. I "know" what I need to do, I just need to "stay on the safe path", not get sidetracked.
Another verse I liked was Prv 3:33b
"but he blesses the home of the upright". I am a homemaker when I am not helping my hubby on the farm, and so that spoke to me. A commentary I read states; "the sunshine of God's favor beams down on the home of the just".

While looking for nuggets, I feel I have hit the Mother Lode...(I live in Gold Country :0) ) Of course, I have so many that could dig out for myself (3:5-6 one of my faves) but I realized that there are so many I can share with my grandchildren.. 1:10 "My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!" They are school age and that can be such a difficult time for kids...God's word can get them through if they can see the consequences before they commit to an action..."My child, don't go along with them!"

Now for the comments about the Proverbs. When I was very young, 16 - 15, my Sunday School class asked our teacher to study the Proverbs next. He frowned that he had never taught Proverbs, but did. I believe that all teenagers should have a group study of this, because it has made me chase wisdom all my life. To strive to be wise was burnt deep into my brain. I am 70 now and I trust that some of it shows. And I think I have been protected from evil because of it.

Today, May 27th, is our 38th anniversary. I am so grateful for our life together! Thank you Lord for this kind and patient man, who has kept me grounded and secure in his love. Extra! Extra! --I finally have my own Chronological Bible! No more flipping pages or sitting at the computer – now I can take it out to my porch swing with my coffee and curl up and read whenever I want! Simple pleasures.
About wisdom. One thing I have loved about my job is the opportunity to spend a little time with elders that come into our clinic. They are so full of wisdom and experience, I just want to soak it all in. As Wendy said, wisdom is all around us, we just need to keep our eyes and ears and hearts open. God will provide us wisdom "according to each day's needs."
Prov 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"— when you now have it with you.
Ouch. How long do I wait to… write that note of condolence or encouragement? offer to babysit my grandkids without a solicitation first? give my husband a well-deserved backrub after he’s worked in the yard? stop what I am doing to answer a child’s request? clean out my closet of nice things someone else could use? call my sweet Mother just to tell her I love her? respond to volunteering? take a meal over to my elderly neighbor? speak up and lift up my co-workers? invite friends over for an evening or call an old friend to get re-connected? The Spirit whispers to me, and WHEN IT IS IN MY POWER TO ACT, do I follow those whisperings, or do I selfishly turn my back, “just this one time?” Tomorrow may be too late, we only have today, now, the present, to do good.

Wendy's vlog is acting wacky on my computer again today. It bugs me to watch a few seconds then have to wait for it to come back on. Will try again later :)
The proverbs are like Psalms to me when we read so many at one time. It can be overwhelming to try to soak it all in. I had several main things I wrote about in my journal.
One was my old in a new way- Proverbs 4:27, "Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil." It is so easy to get off the path God wants us to walk. Satan wants us looking to the right, left and even behind instead of straight ahead (4:25). We have to keep our eyes forward and keep them focused on Jesus (4:26 and Hebrews 12:1-2).
My second was my to-do: Texts were Proverbs 2:1-11 and 1:24-33
Search for wisdom. Cry out for insight, ask for understanding. When I read the Word pray to God that He will open up His truth to me. Ask Him to speak and when He does I need to listen! Don't ignore what He says or not pay attention. If I don't listen I will have to "eat the bitter fruit of living my own way."
There is a prayer that I wrote in the front cover of my Bible from Beth Moore's "Believing God" Bible study to pray when I read His Word. It says:
"God, infuse these words not only into my heart and mind but also into the marrow of my belief system. Bring these words to life in me today. Help me not only to learn them but also to walk by faith in them. Help me believe You!"
I pray that often :)

Wendy, Pro 3:5-6 were the first verses I memorized. Coincidentally enough, in college, during exam time. Oh and I totally agree about wisdom coming from unusual places. Most of the time, He uses my children esp the younger one. One day I was asking him why he's always running to the garage when he hears his Dad coming but he never does that with me, he said "Mom! Because we're always together. Why are you being like the older brother in the Prodigal Son?" Touche.
Michelle, I hear you sister. Been there done that. So many times I want to say something but the Holy Spirit is telling me not to. Sometimes I obey, sometimes...well. And it feels good at first, then I feel bad for disobeying.
Lori, I do the Proverbs-a-Day, too. I tell my boys to do the same and with an 18-year old, I pray he pays attention to Prov 5 & 6 esp about the warnings re the immoral woman.
In today's reading what stood out was Prov 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (KJV) Well, we have issues all right: anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, etc. Solomon tells us it comes from our hearts.
Here is what Jon Courson said: "From murder to blasphemy - evil originates in the heart. As Jesus taught, it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks (Matt 12:34) Therefore to know how your heart is doing, listen to what your mouth is saying." (p. 188, Old Testament vol. 2) Ouch.
He goes on further: "The way to keep your heart is to focus your eyes on the Lord. If your eyes are focused on wickedness, it will pollute your heart. On the other hand, if you keep your eyes on the Lord, if you spend time in the Word and worship Him, you'll become like Him for Paul would say that we are changed from glory even to greater glory as we behold the Lord (2 Cor 3:18)" p. 188
Amy, here is the passage you were looking for and it fits perfectly with today's reading: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Phil 4:8)

Nugget: On last year's read thru, I totally missed the "purposes of Proverbs" laid out in the first verses. That is what I want to know and understand today...to be disciplined, successful (defined by God), wise, insightful, to be right, just and fair. To have knowledge and discernment. Help me Lord! In 1:7 Fear of the Lord. I never understood, fearing God? Why? He loves me. I love Him. Why fear?
Well I looked up the word fear,on dictionary.com, one of the definitions defines fear as 'reverential awe, esp. toward God.'
In Easton Dictionary; "FEAR OF THE LORD in the Old Testament is used as a designation of true piety (Proverbs 1:7; Job 28:28; Psalms 19:9). It is a fear conjoined with love and hope, and is therefore not a slavish dread, but rather **filial [ 1) Of, relating to, or befitting a son or daughter: filial respect. 2) Having or assuming the relationship of child or offspring to parent.] reverence. (Compare Deuteronomy 32:6; Hosea 11:1; Isaiah 1:2; 63:16; 64:8.) God is called "the Fear of Isaac" (Genesis 31:42,53), i.e., the God whom Isaac feared.

Wisdom, gaining knowledge, is a topic dear to my heart. Most people who know I am back in school working on my doctorate, shake their head at me, and some can't control themselves and call me nuts and ask, "why at your age?" The honest and only answer I have is because God is leading me here. To what end, I know not, but I am enjoying the journey, even in the constant stress. Today, 2:10 speaks for my heart "For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy."

Lord we thank you for all our children. they are a gift from you. a gift makes the heart glad, a gift is treasured, a gift talks of value. we want Lord to treasure these souls, we want to value them. we thank you that you watch over them as they go out and you watch over them as they come in.
make us wise parents to say NO when we have to.
make us parents that will lead wisely with no compromises.
may we rest in your wisdom, now and forever.

Our saviour said, we will have trouble so long as we are under the sun, but to take heart for He will be with us to the very end. that is what i am holding on at this particular time. when all else seems bleak and gloom, i can surely say,...Loice, He will be with you to the very end.

This is what I do to view Wendy's blog. When the webpage comes up - click 2 times (not double click, but click twice) in the video frame. This will take you directly to the youtube page. It will come up - once it starts to play, hit pause. This allows the video to load. I usually read the comments while it is loading. Then I watch the video. You will see the red bar go across the bottom. You can usually start watching uninterrupted about halfway through the loading. It will continue to load while you are viewing the beginning.

Father you are so good. i desire your wisdom today, i desire to be a woman who discerns right from wrong, i desire to follow your leading and direction. wisdom shouts from all corners, help me to open my ears to her when she calls, help me to follow her as she leads me to green pastures. lord your word is so awesome, full of life. may we always live to know and follow You all the days of our lives and when this is all done with, spend eternity with our father. walking in peace, dwelling in His presence, walking with Him like adam did, asking our father, what was the meaning of this on earth and what were we supposed to do... Eternity getting wisdom from the source. Lord i want this for my self, my children and all my loved ones and for all your people who you so love each one of them. give us wisdom to choose wisely, wisdom to STOP when we need to, wisdom to NAP when tired, wisdom to be women of GOD.
