A Man Named Job
"There once was a man named Job who lived in Uz. He was blameless-a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil."
Job 1:1

About today's Vlog:
I mentioned that I would speak about something in the latter part of my video but time did not allow it. I need to share.

The day Job lost his children. The day Job became poor. The day he lost everything was the day he worshiped the Lord. I don't know about you but I find that utterly amazing. Only a man who walked closely with God could bow down and worship him after such a horrific day. Would I have done this? I don't think I want to answer that. Wow!

My Take-Aways:
Something Old:
Job 1:6
Even the Accuser was allowed in the God's presence. This is so hard for me to believe.

Something New:
Job 1:3
Job was the richest man in the region.
Job 1:22
Job fell on his face and worshiped the Lord.

Something to do:
Job 1: 1
Live my life by the guidance of the Holy Spirit so I can be blameless- a woman of complete integrity, fearing God, and staying away from evil.

Hi Wendy,thanks for your insight.
I am also amazed that Job could worship in the worst of circumstances. Another reminder to focus on and trust in God no matter what is happening.
I loved that Job would get up in the morning to offer a sacrifice to appease God, for his perception that his children, while partying could have offended God.A loving parent. as well.
Praying for encouragement and energy for you Wendy.

Healing prayers for you Wendy.Hope that cold goes away quickly.
Old in a new way: I also did not realize how very rich Job was.
New: That so much of Job's misfortune happened on a single day.
Take away: Eliphaz's words (Job 4:17)"Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator?" We are all sinners not worthy of God's blessings. I want to keep that in the front of my mind, and be thankful to God continually for all the goodness he has allowed me to have in my life.
Peace to you all,and prayers for the baby. Michelle

Thanks for the vlog, Wendy. Praying you feel better soon!

Something that stuck out to me was the fact that Satan was patrolling, watching everything that was going on. Sometimes I know I give the devil too much power in my life... he is only prowling this earth, and his minions along with him-- when God is everywhere on this earth, even within the heart of man. Satan can not hear our deepest hearts cry, yet the Father already knows them. I won't dimish the power Satan has to throw those fiery darts and attack our minds, but God is so much more. Why do I forget that sometimes.

I'm amazed at Job being able to praise the LORD even right after all was lost.

I wonder how often I accept the good from the LORD with joy, but when the bad comes, how quickly do I lament and groan?

Prayer request... my husband and a group of about 12 others left yesterday for the Ukraine for 9 days. Keep them in your prayers please, along with all the lives they will come in contact with.

Good Morning,
Wendy get well soon. Your videos are great!

I have to say that the 2nd time around on this I am seeing so much more detail, it's like I have never read it before. Isn't God great that way. So in someways everything seems new and different, but here's a recap.

Something New: Job 1:3 I hadn't noticed how many animals he had.
Job 1:7 and 2:2 Like God didn't know where Satan had been.

Something Different: Really the whole reading popped out in a different way to me.

Apply: Job 1:22 "In all of this Job did not sin by blaming God..."
Be like Job, don't blame God for my grief and troubles

Have a blessed day!

Yet another amazing day! I am learning so much and seeing God's Word in such a different way!
I was "always" aware that Satan was allowed in God's presence but never noticed that it was God who brought up Job first. So I gave some thought to the relationship that God and Job had. Wow!
I also noted that Satan studies us. He is a master of human nature in that he knows what buttons to push, etc. Yet all that he does is done all with God's knowledge and he can do nothing to us that God doesn't give him permission to do.
Job didn't sin by blaming God. I cannot imagine. Could I lose everything in one day and react the same? I want to say I could be like Job but I am afraid I would have one of those "pit pity parties."
Thanks again, Wendy! I love Job's story. Blessings all!

Good morning!

Can I make a prayer request? My sister - 25 and lives alone - has been experiencing some vision loss. She's been referred to a special hospital more than an hour away and is going there for tests. She's scared.

1. Job 1:21 Job is the originator of "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away!"

2. Job 1:10 "Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?" Job was wise - God teaches us through EVERY experience and has a plan through it all, even when we don't like it.

3. Job 1:1 integrity: fearing God, staying away from evil. It sounds so simple and can sometimes be so hard to do.

3. Job 1:7b "Satan answered the Lord, 'I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that's going on.'" Satan's right there watching us, waiting for an opportunity to turn our heads from where they should be - to take our attention off our fear of God and to take a step towards evil. What a scary thought - that Satan is always there watching, as well as God!

Have a happy Tuesday!

Today, we read about, Job, “blameless-a man of complete integrity [who] feared God and stayed away from evil,” (Job 1:1), and how he is Satan’s next target! Most of the time it seems we do not understand our circumstances or particular trial’s right off the bat-but we must trust in the Lord like this man of God did. If I ended a day as he did, what would be the thoughts in my own heart?

Something that I did not notice last year was just how much Job’s wife missed her chance to comfort Job through his suffering. She really missed the boat, didn’t she? She even found fault with God for all their problems and said: “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die,” (2:8). As a wife, our role is to comfort our husbands when they are suffering and to strengthen their confidence in God, turning them back to God’s truth at any opportunity. Clearly, we notice how Job’s wife lost her faith in God.

I have developed such a love for God’s Word through this On-line Bible Study. Last year I witnessed God’s never–ending love to his people throughout the ages, and this year, he continues to bless me daily with new nuggets! We are so, so blessed that God has pursued each one of us, and brought us all together to enjoy his precious word. Thank you dear Wendy, and to all of you special people! Dear Wendy, I will pray that your cold goes away! Hugs, Lori

A balmy New England (40 degrees!)good morning to all,

Familiar heard in new way: Job's REGULAR practice of interceding for his kids.

Didn't know: the DEPTH of Job's despair and anguish as he curses the day he was born.

Take away: Job's friends got together, traveled from their homes and went to comfort and console Job. They cried with him, then sat with him for seven days and nights without saying a word. That would be a really long time for me to sit and not offer any words of advice or comfort.(smile) Sometimes, the suffering just need our presence...no words...just our presence...no attempts to fix or explain...just our presence.

Thanks for all the posts - what precious things the Lord is showing us!

May our lifesong sing to HIM today!

I want to share a quote from Max Lucado - I had written it down in my Bible last time around - " God is God. He knows what He is doing. When you can't trace His hand, trust His heart".

Praying for each one of you and Amy's sister, as well as Lisa H's baby, as requested yesterday.

Blessings to each of you this day,

I just want to thank you all for your wonderful insights. It is a joy to be able to hop back to the comments during the day and glean new understanding. It really makes this Bible study an on-going part of my day. THANK YOU WENDY for making this possible through your wonderful ministry. LORI - wonderful observation about Job's wife, and reminder of a wife's role as encourager. I need to be better at that. Prayers for Amy's sister, Lisa's baby, and Danielle's husband. Good morning all from OH-
I'm thrilled to have found this study and the chronological bible.

I so appreciate your ministry Wendy, and it's encouraging to know others are reading and studying the same passages every day.

I'm embarrassed to say I've never read Job. What an example for me.

The Accuser....whoa...it's so true he loves to remind me of my failures.

Blessings to all

Good Morning, I am praying, may the healing hand of our Lord be on all. Thanks Marianne for the Max Lucado quote, I love it.
1)heard in a new way; Job 4:3-5 Eliphaz's response to Job 'you have encouraged, strengthened & supported others but now you(Job) lose heart.' How true it is, easy to give advise, hard to put the same advise into practice in our own life.
Job 4:17 'Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator?' The answer is NO. Only through the blood of Jesus can we stand before the throne.
2)did not know; Job 1:4, Job's sons had feast & would invite their 3 sisters. This speaks of the closest of the siblings. You don't hear often about the sisters/women. `
Job 3:25 'What I feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true' I was surprised that Job worried about losing his children, wealth & health. Negative thoughts get us nowhere but to a negative place of despair.
3)nugget; We need friends to help us through tough times but we need God even more.
Enjoy your day.
Blessing & Peace Mary

What insight today, girls! I was making up yesterday's reading, so I went from sobbing over the death of Jacob and Joseph to seeing what happened to Job!

It always amazed me in this scripture that God encouraged Satan to test Job. Since He is the same God yesterday, today and tomorrow, does God encourage Satan to test us as well today? Most definitely! That really makes me think!

Your comments have me in thinking mode! Wendy, hope you will feel better soon! Bless your heart! Amy, your sister is in my prayers!Danielle, got your hubby and his friends in prayer as well. I'll be back later to check again. Y'all have a wonderful day!

Good morning, ladies!

Like so many others have posted lately, I've been following along, but haven't posted to the blog. Thanks, Wendy, for what you do.

Familiar but new: I did not remember that Job lost everything at the same time.

New: "Job would purify his children" - I did not realize that someone could offer sacrifices on behalf of another.

Amy - praying for your sister - does she live in TN - maybe we could do something to help?

Blogger ~Grace and Peace said...

Lisa, I hope your baby is better. Amy, lifting up your sister in prayer. I had an episode of vision loss last year and did lots of tests to determine that it may have been -- stress. Praying for a good result for her as well.
Danielle, travel mercies for your husband and his companions. May God work mightily through them!

Lori what you said about Job's wife made me think. She did miss her chance to comfort her husband. I tend to give her a little slack because she is a mother who just lost all her children. Maybe, unlike Job who focused on God in the midst of his pain, she was too focused on her pain to see clearly. I need to remember this when things happen to keep my eyes on Him and not my circumstances or I lose my perspective, too.

New to me: Job 1:16 "...the fire of God has fallen from heaven and burned up your sheep..." The person who reported this incident attributed the cause to God. A lot of people have a tendency to blame God for the bad things that happen when in reality, the enemy is behind it.

Also I was confused at the seeming change of Job's tone from Chapter 1where he was praising God to Chapter 3 when he wished he was never born. Matthew Henry wrote that during the 7 days of quiet, the enemy assaulted his mind.

The nuggets I learned (list is from Koinonia Inst class):
1. Satan is accountable to God.
2. God knows what Satan is thinking
3. Satan is behind the evils that curse the earth. Remember 1 Peter 5:8 The enemy prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.
4. Satan is neither omnipresent or omniscient. He has locality but he has a lot of demons doing his work. He can't read your mind but can plant thoughts.
5. Satan can do NOTHING without Divine permission.
6. God's eyes are ever on His own. (And I am grateful for that!)

Have a blessed day, everyone!

What a powerful and weighing read.

Something old: Job never blames God or curses Him, yet knows God uses all things to help us grow.

Something new: Satan was allowed in the presence of the Lord. When I read that I actually read the sentence twice. Wow.
Also, every time Satan approaches God's presence God points out Job and how wonderful His child Job is. The Lord loves Job.

Nugget: Right as I was reading the messengers going to Job I just had to pray a prayer of thanksgiving to God for all I have in this moment. I fear how I would respond to such tragedies, so I must continue to strengthen in knowing and trust of the Lord.

Get better Wendy! :)

Good Tuesday morning and blessings of this day!

Familiar but new to me today was the ministry of the three friends. I have always loved that they came and sat with Job in silence and honored that his suffering was too great for words, because so often we minister by "singing songs to a heavy heart." Today something new popped out at me "when they saw Job from a distance they scarcely recognized him." Job 2:12 Truly, his grief must have manifested itself throughout his body, and he was covered in boils...yet they did not shy away! They came closer, sat next to him, took on his grief as their own and ministered to him. That speaks volumes.

Completely new to me today were three things:

*Job 2:7 "so Satan left the Lord's presence and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot." WOW There is so much in that one line, so I am just going to say one of the things I got from it is Satan can physically hurt us.

*Job 1:20 Job shaved his head and fell to the ground in worship. I had missed this before, as well.

*Thanks to Lori, I paid attention today that Job's wife lost faith and encouraged him to abandon his loyalty to God and die. Job 2:8

My To Do? Live the lesson of Job. Praise God in the storm. Accept hardship as blessing and be patient as I trust in Him. Verbalize my faith as well as display it. Understand that Satan is prowling this earth - that he is an Accuser and a Deceiver who will do ANYTHING to Lie, Steal and Destroy our faith and joy in our God who we have never seen, but unquestionably know lives in us and has only good planned for us. Indeed, live as Job lived, that in the battle between God and Satan my loyalty cannot be bought.

AmenAmenAmen,

Liz

Grace and Peace, we were writing at the same time!

Thanks to your post I am adding a fourth had never noticed before and that is your excellent point about the fire of "God". I had missed that one, too!

Also, I made notes that once Job began speaking it was to his credit he cursed the day he was born rather than curse God. The enemy may have been assaulting his mind, but He did not get the best of him.

Thanks, too, for that wonderful list. If I ever get the chance to take that course I am signing Up!

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for leading this one year bible reading! May God bless you beyond measure!

Something new I saw in today's reading is that Job did not sin by blaming God.
Something old in a new way was when his friends first came and saw that his suffering was too great for words they were silent. I identify with that as I have had the experience of losing my daughter a few years ago & appreciated the friends who just
cried with me.
And the thing I see to do is to keep silent more and not try to figure out God's motives for some of the "bad" things that happen to me or anyone else.

Anonymous Olivia said...

I have to say I got really fired up in my reflection of this reading today!
Something old heard new:
First of all, I am again amazed at the blessing God is giving me in this daily journey. He has shown me parallels again in the teaching I received this past Sunday (Luke's recount of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness) with the scripture I read this week, specifically today. In both cases, I didn't realize that Satan was "allowed" to come to us. That is a sobering realization. That while we are protected, sometimes we need to learn lessons about our faith - like a child, being able to figure something out on their own versus their parent keeping them from harm all the time. Also, just being reminded that Satan is a real, cunning, vicious enemy. He knows exactly how to come at us and hit us where it REALLY hurts. And he is persistent - with Job here, as well as with Jesus later. Even after we fight him and win, he will come back. The fight is never over.

Something new:
I am not terribly familiar with the book of Job, so it is all relatively new, but what probably surprised me the most was that Satan went to God and got PERMISSION to test Job. Wow. How brazen and proud he is. But what I took from that was that I sincerely believe that God knew how this would end, and (I hope) that it ends in Job's faith remaining in God.
I also appreciate that his friends traveled to be with him in his suffering and help keep him strong with the word of God. I have just started developing my first friendships in my church, and they are so wonderfully fulfilling and supportive - especially lately when I have been struggling. That is such a blessing. Praise God for these people.

Nugget:
I WILL be tested. Most likely we all are/will be. Especially when we're strong in our faith and happy with our lives and comfortable in our walk. What I really gathered from this as well as from Luke was that we need to be prepared for battle. What that means to me is that I need to KNOW scripture and be able to use it as my counterpunch, my instinctive first line of defense. We are warriors! Sometimes that is easy to forget. I want to always be ready for attack, I want to sleep with my sword and boots on. My preparation for this is THIS - learning the scripture and really hearing it and taking it to heart so that it will stay with me and be my sword when I need it most. This and my faith in God to protect me are the only things that will get me through my earthly life and my fight. I am a WARRIOR!!!

Woo hoo from Seattle!

Thanks so much for your prayers for my sister! She's at her appt now and is much less scared because she heard that the MRI and bloodwork will probably be scheduled for another appointment, but we still don't know the cause or if her vision loss is permanent. Scary thought!

Sheryl C, it's so sweet of you to offer to help her. She's actually located in central VA and lives relatively close to our parents, who have been helping her through all of this.

Olivia, isn't our spiritual armor important? I keep meaning to memorize that passage but haven't done it yet. I need to get on the ball!

Wendy, I read along with you for much of the year last year but can't believe how much MORE I'm learning and how close I feel to all of you THIS year. It's amazing that we're reading and studying together from all over the world - but I look forward to getting to meet everyone in person somday. What a party that will be!

PS - My Bible study group has decided to jump on board with this study, and our first discussion meeting is tonight. If anyone's in central/north NC and wants to join us, we'd love to have you!

Okay, I just went back and read everyone's posts and have to add a few things.
Grace and Peace I loved that list, that made it in my journal as a reminder for later.
Amy, I will pray for your sister for strength and God's will in this test
Danielle, lifting up your husband and the other men to God for his protection and strength
Wendy, hope you feel better!

And finally, prayers for everyone in Haiti, the locals suffering loss and devastation as well as all that have gone down to help. Moral strength for everyone and blessings in this time of severe need.

Wow! You all have had such good comments. Since you have given all the "answers" I am going to take a different direction.

There are 5 reasons why the book of Job was written.
1. Why do people suffer?
2. To rebuke the slander of Satan against mankind.
3. Teaches patience.
4. Teaches repentance.
5. To reveal to Job to himself. He thought he could do no wrong. He was very egotistical about his own Righteousness. When he came into the presence of God, to defend himself, he found he needed to repent.

All of this revealed a lot to me. It helped me understand the whole book.

I got to looking into the 3 friends of Job's. I like to know how they connect to the people we have already read about.

The commentators think that Job was written about the time of Abraham, Jacob, etc. One reason is because Job's friend Eliphaz was a Temanite...he was a grandson of Esau. Genesis 36:4, 10-11. Look for the name "Teman" and I Chronicales 1:35. Bildad, a Shuite was a son of Keturah, Abraham's wife after Sarah died. Genesis 25:2, Zophar a Naamathite, is found in I Chronicales 6:26. Naamah is in northern Arabia.
The commentators say that there is no mention of high priests, (the head of each family acted as high priest for their family) or Moses, or the law, and it leads them to feel that Job was alive during the time of Abraham, Jacob.

My take away...just as God had a hedge around Job, 1:10, He has one around every one of His children. Nothing can touch me with out God's allowing it.

NUGGET: In light of Job's situation, I am reminded that beyond material blessings and comfort, to be able to just have peace of mind and heart is an underrated blessing. If your heart, soul, and physical health are in turmoil, what does the material stuff matter? In Job's case, now that he's lost all the material things, his family, and his health, he has no peace and just wants to die. Totally understandable and if I'm being honest with myself, I'd have lost hope much sooner than Job did.

In light of Job's circumstances, it is so important and vital that I praise God for His providence and blessings of a safe place to live, food to eat, health, and a job that helps me pay my bills. To have His peace, joy, and love in my heart on top of all that... I'm rich!

My take-away today is to stop comparing my life to others (who seem to have it all in material and life stuff) and be so grateful for the simple joys I have in Him. Praise God, He is so good. I ask Him to continue to have mercy on me, my human nature, and protection from the Accuser who can try to destroy this joy and peace by getting under my skin with comparing and seeing what others "seem to have" based on my blind, limited vision. Discontentment and jealousy is poison and toxic to the Spirit, it kills and destroys. (Eliphaz brings this point up in beginning of tomorrow's reading). God is stronger than the Accuser, forever faithful to the end. He has given me freedom and peace, that is priceless.

Contentment and Peace to all,

Krista

Wendy-

I, too, was struck that Satan was allowed to come into the presence of God. I always have this picture of Satan melting into a puddle when God comes close.

My take away: Job said his greatest fear had come true (Job. 3:25). Even though Job was blameless, God knew his fear. I hold on to many fears--God knows this. I must let go of these and allow God to secure those places. I want to trust God so much that even if my greatest fears come true He will still be holding me.

Praying you feel better soon, Wendy!
1. Old but in a new way...Satan before God but coming with the angels. Never thought of him coming with the heavenly court - it's a bit stunning! Also, Satan's words in this translation are so sobering to me that he "patrols the earth, watching everything".

2. New - that on this horrific day of so much tragedy that Job in his grief still managed to "Praise the name of the Lord." Wow, that is powerful. He didn't first ask why, or complain but he praised. That is something to hold on to.

3. Something to do - to remember Job's attitude and actions in the face of trials and unspeakable tragedy by offering God my praise. He is worthy, even though I may not understand what He's doing. He is sovereign and still worthy of praise.

Good afternoon all, I have been on the road and just returned and had to play catchup on the Vlogs and comments for yesterday and today. You know I have known the story of Job all my life and read it and studied it may times but saw some new things today.
Old - God allowed satan to test Job but not harm him
New- He praised the name of the Lord in spite of losing everything not just materially but his children too! Not sure I could do that!
The take away nugget is to remember not only to praise God for the good in life but also the bad-for these are the times we are tested so we will grow closer to God and stronger in our faith.
I am so enjoying this study with everyone and reading all the comments. I have learned so much already and we just finished Genesis in the first 18 days of the new year!! WOW! What does God have in store for the rest of the year?!?! Will be praying for everyone that requested prayer and also a special prayer for Wendy. Hope you feel better soon.

Hello all! You all pretty much touched on what I had jotted down in my journal so I will just post my nugget...

Job 2:10 "Should we accept only the good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?"

This verse speaks volumes to me...

Hope you feel better soon Wendy!

Hi Everyone,

Just checking in to let Wendy and others know I am still on board and have every intention of finishing the journey again this year. I have prayed for all who requested.

My Nugget:

Life will oftentimes seem unfair and difficult but I must not sin against God by blaming him for what the devil does. When in doubt who is behind the trouble, remember the devil's purpose in the world is to kill, to steal and destroy. Jesus came to give us life and that we may have it more abundantly. John 10:10

When worship is a daily part of our lives, it will manifest no matter what the circumstance is, we worship for who He is not for what is happening in our lives.

No amount of money or stuff really matters. What counted most was Job's integrity- His character. He knew God, he feared God, and stayed away from evil! Smart man! I have to wonder why God gave permission to the Satan the Accuser. He told him he was the finest man in all the earth. Blameless ( vs.8) I think this shows that God knew the true love that Job had for him. It shows that He was a man that had been with God! WOW! It is almost as if God says I can show you Satan - you still can not win. There are my children that love me! Test and see!

What a relationship!God had faith in Job's love and honor for him. Makes me stop and think would God truly know my answers and heart to allow such tests?
My take away for me: To strive to live a life of complete integrity. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead in such a way that I can know the very heart of God and I too could worship like Job.

Sweet blessings to all!

It was very interesting to me that Job would give an offering for each of his children after they partied. I never caught this before. He must have loved them so much!

I was blown away with the fact that after all the horrible losses - one after another - Job fell to his knees in worship. No "why me Lord?"...just worship, because God is who He is. How I need to remember that!

I have a dear friend who is going through a very tough time with her teenage daughter. Some of the ladies from our small group sat with her last night for about an hour and a 1/2, talking with her, consoling her, and praying with her. Sometimes in situations like that I struggle with what to say to someone who is suffering. I was so touched by Job's friend. How they grieved with and for him...and then just sat with him (for 7 days!). I was struck with the thought that we don't have to always have something to say. We just need to be there to hold a hand... I want to always be that kind of friend...

What is it like to sit in the quite
To be still & be reminded
That God loves us ever so dearly
God allows Satan to test us clearly
And Satan will test us to our core
But he can never take us completely
For we belong to a Father
Who loves us as a daughter
Protecting us from our enemy

God just put this on my heart - it is rough but I think it sums up what I felt when I read today.

I was also touched by the three friends who sat in silence for seven days and mourned with Job. Sometimes we don't need words but just the comfort of our friend.

Blessings to each of you and may all the prayer requests be lifted up to our Heavenly Father - our Sheperd, our Might One, and our Rock.

See you tomorrow,
