Lev 14:22 “…whatever the person can afford”, or in another translation, “such as he is able to get.” I’m sure that many of us are saying “I just don’t get this” I couldn’t resist ordering John Courson’s Application Commentary for the Old Testament to use as a supplement to this daily journey with Wendy, and Courson says to the above statement – “That’s OK if you don’t get it. All the Lord requires is that you apply what you are able to get.”
I was very confused with much of today’s reading about purification from childbirth and all the ritual concerning leprosy. But then – wow! I learned from Courson about the rich symbolism in this reading and it has all come alive for me, for example:
A baby boy was to be circumcised on the 8th day because 8 is not only the number of new beginnings, but physiologically – the day when blood coagulates. The fact that circumcision was to be done on the 8th day speaks of the fact that sin is to be dealt with from the earliest of days.
Courson says that as hard as it is for us to imagine when looking at a new baby boy or girl – the Lord is declaring that as glorious and wonderful an event as it is – another sinner is added to the world. We are ALL sinners.
The mother brings an offering to be purified after childbirth. The lamb being the most costly offering – it speaks of the Lamb of God, whose blood was to be shed that we might be forgiven.
Chapters 13 and 14 deal with leprosy. Like sin – leprosy begins beneath the surface, out of sight initially – no big deal. Then, as Courson says, it spreads insidiously. Like sin, leprosy destroyed sensitivity. Like sin, leprosy was incurable. And this part is astonishing: although this “Law” contained detailed instructions for the cleansing of leprosy – none could be used until 1500 years later when Jesus began to cure lepers and told them to show themselves to the priests so that these rituals could be completed! Finally, Courson notes the analogy that like sin – leprosy caused separation between people and their loved ones. The leper was sent away to live in isolation. Sin destroys relationships, splits families, and breaks hearts.
Lev. 13: 46: “…he is unclean; he shall dwell alone…” Courson notes that this is an analogy for hell. If we die without repenting or being saved – we will live for all eternity in blackness, and all alone.
Why was the blood applied to the ear, the thumb, and the toe – followed by the oil? What we have heard, what we have done, and where we have been is all covered by the blood (of Christ). That is followed by the oil – the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can only be applied where the blood has been. Courson notes that too often we week the Holy Spirit when in reality, we first need to repent of sin.

Reading through this weekend’s chapters I could not help notice the reoccurring word: unclean. “For I am the LORD your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy” (11:44).
Chapter 11- they were to eat clean food
chapters 12 & 13-clean bodies
13:47-59 - clean clothes
14:33-57 - clean house
chapter 15 - clean hygiene
chapter 16 - clean nation
God clearly wanted everything unclean removed from the Israelites lives. Anything unclean, defiled the person. Today, it’s the same: Unclean (sin) separates us from experiencing God’s presence. God so desires us to be clean, inwardly and outwardly-our thoughts, our actions, & our words. It is our responsibility to learn how God expects us to live. As we read His Word, the Holy Spirit will guide us each day and we will live according to His will for us.
Well, what can I say, another blessed week in the Word with you all! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Wendy, thank you for the time you put in to stretch our minds and draw us even closer to God! The weekend is here! And bright and early for me....I sent my hubby off on his fishing trip at 3am....and couldn't get back to sleep...I assume I'll be having a nap later.
Leviticus 14:4 says that for the purification ceremony they used live birds, cedar, scarlet yarn and a hyssop branch. Since it's becoming more clear to me all the time that everything in the Old Testament points in the direction of our Jesus of the New; I looked up the symbolism of each.
The bird of course was the innocent sacrifice that would later be Jesus.
The cedar represents the cross.
The scarlet yarn is Jesus' blood.
the hyssop branch is a symbol of cleansing.
This just makes me say "Yay Jesus" even more!
I also read that since the Isrealites had been captive for 400 years to the Egyptians, the only worship they knew was to the Egyptian gods. Leviticus' specific instructions taught them how to worship the One True God.
Prayers going to upward for our beloved unsaved; for sick children; for lonely hearts missing loved ones; for those struggling with addictions; and for God to grant us His wisdom as we continue to read His word. Almost 2 months down GIG's!

I have to admit my mind was in a bit of a "bog" as I started reading. I had to stop and pray and ask God to show something signifigant for me to get out of today's reading. I came out with my to do: "Make sure I'm clean before the Father in all areas of my life." We are encouraged to allow the Lord to check our hearts to see if their be any wrong or wicked way within us. THat is my prayer, that God would show me & help me rid myself of anything unclean or ungodly.
Even with that being said, alot of today's reading seemed like a lot to take in. All the cleansing they had to do in order to worship God! On today's level, I'm glad we don't have to go through all of that. But we should make sure are hearts are ready and prepared before the Lord.

My old: Lev 13: 45-46 Those with leprosy were forced to live outside the camp and had to yell "Unclean!" if anyone came near. Sin like leprosy is contagious and can spread, and it separates us from God and our loved ones.
My new and my nugget: Didn't understand Lev 14:15-18 and the reason the priest put the oil on the right ear, thumb and big toe after the blood. Thank you Judi B. for the information from Jon Courson. It has made me think ... the Holy Spirit can only be applied where the blood of Christ has already been... what sins have I not confessed? and are those sins limiting the work of the Holy Spirit in me?

Yesterday I seemed in a mourning and in so much confusion about Arron's 2 sons...nothing was making sense. I ask God in my quiet time. "Lord you want us in your word and have a relationship with you. I am so so confused will you show me some understanding?".......All I can say now is THANK YOU LORD!! Praise the Lord!!

Wow, today's reading was almost like reading a medical journal!
Didn't Know: contaminated clothing was treated with almost as much care and inspection as the people with the skin disease.
Take Away: The priests were in charge of the health of the people. Leprosy is often used as an illustration of sin - according to the Life App Bible, it is highly contagious, destructive and leads to separation. Jesus is our High Priest - He heals us of our sin, our leprosy.
Interesting to note that Moses was given leprosy back in Ex 4, then God immediately healed him. Wonder what Moses was thinking as God instituted all these instructions regarding skin diseases when he knew God could miraculously heal.

This is my first time to offer any comments, but I am excited! As I read Lori's comments I was truly blessed! I had not thought about the blood to the ear, the thumb and the toe, followed by the oil, having a direct reference to our Wonderful Savior, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Sin so easily separates us from the love of our families and friends as well as our God. What a wonderful, awesome thought that the blood of our Lamb brings us back to all of our loved ones!

I can't add much to everyone else's takeaways so shall addresss some specifics. Praying for husbands and others to find the Way, the Truth and the Life. For those who lost love ones, a Pastor once told me not to feel sorry - some women never have a good man in their life and I was doubly blessed with a father and husband who were. Replace Mother, Brother, child, best friend or whoever you want. Also my late husband practically on his death bed told me he believed death (even premature) was not a punishment but a reward. Comforted me for over 20 years!
To anonymous with is battling with a husband's fondness for alcohol - has any one mentioned Al-Anon? I went to their program - somewhat unwilling - because I thought the problem was the drinker's not mine. Al-Anon was all about me! Just as God was concerned about me! I still remember the Serenity Prayer - God grant me the courage to accept what I cannot change, to change what I can and the wisdom to know the difference! (paraphrased). Please see if there is a place you can meet with others...If not, Al-Anon has a book called Courage to Change which I shared with many others. I bought it long ago and even kept it hidden until I had to confront the issue head on. I hope some of my words can be a blessing to others. Others words sure have been and thru this Bible study with Wendy, continue to be an everyday blessing to me!
Every time I read chapter 12 I always wonder why women who gave birth to girls were unclean and the days of their purifying was twice as long than it was when they gave birth to boys.
The weekend is finally here and tomorrow I will finally get to go to church. I haven't been for the past three Sundays because of snow an the ice that was in the parking lot of my apartment building.

Late!Late!Late! but the Lord is up with me.;) It is unbelievable what we are learning. I did yesterday and today's readings...today. I took heed to Lysa TerKeurst's devotional on 2/18 titled, "Don't Read"
I couldn't get past Lev. 10:4-7 and Lev. 10:19. I read about 6-8 commentaries until I got it. ( I hope);)His Word is so powerful. I will never say that the first part of the OT is boring and that it just gives lists of names. Smack my hand, Jesus!!!
My nugget is based on Lev.10:10: I must know that my relationship with Jesus is one-on-one; it can't be shared but with Him and me, and I must be aware of what is right by Him in my life-- what is clean and what is not!!!

Jane, I'd give anything to be able to talk about all that the Lord is teaching me and how it is changing my life. I find myself talking about something that I've learned and placed in my heart, but I only wish they could know this feeling. I am somewhat empty because I can only share with my GIG who are doin the study. I talk about ya'll and your comments as if you were living here in my town, going to my church. Oh, how nice it would be to have friends that wanted to truly talk and share about God's Word in depth.

Courson says about our readings today that there are certain chapters in the Bible from which one would not necessarily choose to preach or teach because they deal with issues that are rather personal and can even be embarrassing. But since every part of God’s word has an amazing way of being applicable to our daily lives, he asks that we work through the text to discover applications. Since Wendy doesn’t vlog on the weekends, I submit the following to help us today:
As for the end of Lev 14: “mold” of the house speaks of sins of the heart. In Ephesians 3, Paul prayed that Christ might dwell in our hearts. If we have sin in our hearts, we can’t lock the door and seal it out. The “stones “are to be ripped out and carried away lest the mold spread. Mold also speaks of the family and how if we don’t show our children what it can do, how it works, and what to do about it – it will spread.
Courson says chapter 15 deals with hidden uncleanness and speaks of the sins we are able to hide from others but which are just as insidious as and sometimes even more dangerous than those which are obvious.
Water is mentioned throughout as they way to cleanse from these contagious diseases (hidden sin). Note Psalm 119 when David asks “how shall a young man clean his way? By taking heed to the Word.” And in John 15:3 – Jesus declared “Now you are clean by the Word I have spoken unto you.” There is indeed a washing, a cleaning from spiritual diseases (sin) as we drink of the Scriptures.
The breaking of the earthen vessel refers to the price that is paid for promiscuity. Everyone touched by such gets shattered and broken in the process.
The Law required that a man separate from his wife for seven days during her period. Courson says that such a separation was designed to have a renewing effect on marriage after those days of separation had passed.
And with regard to the chronic uncleanness that is not part of a monthly period – that appears to be linked to sexually transmitted disease. Such a discharge would have been unbearable to a Jewish woman since she would be restricted from going into the Tabernacle and in what she could do publically and socially. But what is the solution? Look in Luke 8 – “Someone touched me,” said Jesus. And indeed the woman who had been unclean for twelve years had touched the border of his garment. And through prayer – Courson notes that we can also touch Him and be healed by Him.
The goat being led into the wilderness symbolizes that the sins of the congregation were carried out of sight – an illustration that God will remember our sins no more (see Jeremiah 31:34).
One final note – guess why blood was always sprinkled seven times during all of these purification rituals? Jesus bled from seven points during the Passion and Crucifixion: From the crown of thorns on His head; from his back, where he was cruelly whipped; from His left and right hands where they were pierced through with spikes; also from His left and right feet. And finally – from His side which bled from the thrust of the spear. Thus, prophetically, the blood was sprinkled seven times prefiguring what Christ would do perfectly and completely.
That is just a very short synopsis of 10 pages of Courson – but I hope it helps and shows that there is a purpose to every word of the Word, and that the symbolism in these chapters is simply amazing.

AS humans and some of us mothers we can not help but think of child birth and welcoming a child into the world as a blessed time...we look at our "creation" and marvel at how "perfect" it is. But God set apart this time to remind us NO...each one of us is conceived in sin, a sin nature...it is a solemn time that reminds us that our first job as parents is to remember this little one we love so much is a sinner...that needs a Savior. That is God's perspective...even if the world we live in tries to teach us otherwise.

Sunday morning...and after reading today I came away a little blah with the reading. Thank you so much Judi for the commentary of John C that you keep sharing. It helped me immensely! And I also loved the 7 points of bleeding of Christ with the 7 altar points. Too cool.
I wrote in my margin next to the mold in the house verses that this correlates to the sin in our bodily houses.
I also connected in my head the menstrual bleeding of the women to the woman in the NT who touched Jesus' hem and was healed. Again, thank You Jesus!

Just an aside, not only is Leviticus the foreshadowing of NT but it is also a way for the Israelis to stay healthy & to reduce illness. Remember it is a large group of people in the dessert. Our Lord not only cares for us spiritually but physically too.

Good Morning, I haven't checked in here lately. It's been a crazy couple of weeks. To be honest, I've gotten behind on the study due to life circumstances. Within one week, I found out my job contract will not be renewed and my husband was diagnosed with MS. Please keep us in prayer. I am certain that just as God closes a door, he opens another one. As a new chapter is ready to begin on our life, I want to bring glory and honor to Him through His strength. I know that in our weakness, He is strong.

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear your news. My first reaction was, of course, to pray for you and your husband (please may I have his name.) I had popped back on here after commenting earlier because I am just so filled with His spirit today that I wanted to say thank you again to Wendy and all the GIG's here for helping me so much to stay close to God. It makes my life so joyful. But when I fall away because "life" gets in the way, things are definitely not joyful. Nancy, stay with us. For today my something Old: The Old Test. is filled with symbols of Chrisit's coming. I must read "deeper" to get its full understanding.
Something New: Lev. 16:1 talks of Aaron's 2 sons who died after going before the Lord and burning the wrong kind of fire. God's ways are serious! We must pay full attention to how He wants us to conduct things for Him and not play around. His Word is not to be taken lightly.
My Something To Do: Don't take God's Word lightly. Every page in the Bible is an important part of who God is and who He wants us to be as His child.

It seems as if adult women were sort of outcast, weren't they? It sounds as if when you were 'unclean' you were separated a bit from others and unable to participate in every aspect of life, and adult fertile women would've been forced to stay behind for fully half of this time. That's despressing. I'm glad that we never have to stay away from Jesus now, no matter what yucky condition our bodies are in.
Thought from Zondervan handbook on Chapter 14: the mold of the house speaks to the sin in the heart. Chapter 16: "the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews sees Leviticus fulfilled in Christ. The trappings of the first covenant are 'symbolic, pointing to the present time (9:9). Christ the high priest of the new covenant, has entered, not a 'sanctuary made by human hands', but 'heaven itself, to appear before God on our behalf' (10:24), appearing 'once and for all at the climax of history to abolish sin by the sacrifice of himself' (26)."
Aaron could not come however and whenever he chose to the Most Holy Place; how wonderful that we, through the blood of Jesus, can enter into the Most Holy Place just as we are!
Notice how many times in our readings "The Lord said to".. the Lord still speaks to us today, to me; I just need to listen. My to do is to listen so that when He speaks, I will hear.

I have been following daily since Jan. 1st, but this is my first time to comment. In the past when I have tried to read through the bible on my own, this section is where I get stuck and in the past, have given up.
I am so thankful for my sister-in-law who led me to Proverbs 31 daily devotionals which led me to Wendy's New Year's Challenge, which has led me to this fantastic group.

NUGGET: During the season of Lent, I pray to walk the path of Christ by remaining as "clean" as I humanly can be.
Brandee, praying for your healing. It's hard to be sick while the little one is still sick. I hope John and other family members are able to pitch in. Just focus on getting yourself better so you can take care of everybody again.
Nancy, praying for God's grace, provision, peace and healing during these uncertain times. The bible says Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow which means God is still in the miracle business. Remember the names of God we wrote in our journal? He is and always be our Jehovah Jireh.

My takeaway is about the scapegoat. This time I'm taking it from the KJV Study Bible: "Aaron offered the goat for the people & the other actions involved in this sacrifice made it clear that the sins of the people had a defiling effect on the tabernacle. If not removed, the sins would have caused the ministry to be ineffective for atoning for the people. The goat was not guilty of the sins, but he bore them anyway, allowing the guilty to escape the consequences of their sins. In Jesus' bearing our sins and His death outside the city (outside the camp), He fulfilled this annual ritual of the Day of Atonement. Not only was Jesus the perfect High Priest, He was also the perfect Sacrifice.
"Sending the goat into the wilderness was a public ceremony. Everyone could see Aaron symbolically placing the sins of the people on the goat's head. All the ways that people could offend God were placed on the head of the goat, which took them away from the camp, away from the people, away from God."
Isn't that a beautiful picture of what happens when our sins are forgiven? God remembers them no more. Yet why is it there are times that I will chase that scapegoat back and bring it back to camp so to speak and wallow in my already forgiven sin? If God had forgotten about it, I should also forgive myself and let it go.

a few comments for the weekend readings...
as a gynecologist, leviticus 15:28 jumped out to me...essentially, a woman is unclean for seven days of her menstrual flow, then after the stop of her flow she is to count off another 7 days untill she is ceremonial clean, and can have sexual relations with her husband... this would put them 'back together' just at the time of ovulation!! God is so smart!!! no wonder there were millions of isrealites!!
also a note on the rules of prohibited foods...ie) only fins and scales, no pork, etc... jordan rubin, in 'the makers diet' describes all of the disease that could be obtained by eating such foods, especially pre-refridgeration and preservatives. he has several Christian nutrition and healing books that i recommend.
wendy, congratulations on your new venture...how fitting...we, your test subjects, can verify the inspired nature of such a project!

That's a very good point as to the timing. I never thought about that & the connection w the ovulation cycle.
Did you order all 3 volumes of Courson's commentaries? Get your highlighter ready. ;) I even ordered dust jacket plastic covers (just like the library books) from an online company. I carry that commentary around with me so I want the covers to remain in good condition. (I'm weird that way w/ books.)
