The Blessing of Receiving
In everything I did , I showed that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:25

Girls, these are wise and very truthful words of Jesus. In our human flesh sometimes, I will admit at the time He is calling me to give, I don't feel like I am blessed. You know those times. When He asks you to prepare a meal for a family who has had sickness in their family and you are barely able to get it together enough to prepare a meal for your own family. Or maybe when you are physically exhausted and put out with your kids, He tells you to go get your friend's children because she needs a break more than you do. No matter what the situation, when God calls us to give, we must obey and though it doesn't seem like something we want to do at the time or think that it will be blessing in way shape or form, we come out on the other side of obedience being blessed. I have learned that the other side of obedience is much sweeter if our attitude is right from beginning.

Having said that, let me also say the receiving end of the giving is a blessing too. So often in my life I try to kindly reject offers for help when one of my friends wants to do something for me. Whether it is offering to take my children for awhile, buy my lunch, or take me to the movie, I try to say politely say "Thanks but no thanks you don't have to do that." Then one day I heard my pastor say that we need to be good receivers. The words stung me. By rejecting my friend's offers to do something for me and by politely saying, "Thanks but no thanks, you don't have to do that" I was taking away their blessing of being the giver. Am I explaining this well?

This week I have blessed someone by being a good receiver. God used a friend in a mighty way in my life. She offered to come pick up my kids and take them for a "treat." She had no idea that moments before her call I had said to the Lord I did not know how I was going to finish my handouts for my retreat that were do that very day. His timing was perfect and so was hers. She kept the children just long enough for me to do what I needed to do. As she was pulling in the driveway to return my sweet babies, (Though they are 10 and 7, they are still my babies.) I was pressing send on my email with the handouts.

I want to challenge us all to be good receivers. Let's choose to be good receivers so the giver can experience the blessing they were meant to receive and fully understand the meaning of "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

For His Renown

I know one pastor who says, "Don't rob me of my blessing." If nothing else, guilt always works! :) Thanks for giving all of us readers a blessing through your blog!

You know, Wendy, these are really good thoughts. Just the other day I had a friend who sent me an email about how overwhelmed she was with all of her responsibilities. After thinking things over for a few minutes, I was reminded of something I had recently read about random acts of kindness. (I think it may have actually been on your blog) Anyway, I decided that I would offer to take her lunch and tell her that I had one hour of free time the next day and that I would help her with absolutely anything she needed at the moment.

Well, I sent the email, but never heard back from her. I thought maybe she didn't get the email, so I didn't think much about it until
I saw her and asked if she had received it. She said that she had, but my offers were never acknowledged. While I don't hold this against her, I really needed the blessing of being able to help her that day or for her to acknowledge that I was trying to help.

I guess the point is that even if we don't accept the offers others make, we should at least say "thank you."

That is something I have to work on. My love language is Acts of Service,so I am real good at doing and giving out, but not so good at receiving. That is a great reminder. My pastor told me once that by not receiving I may be blocking someone else from their blessing, or I could get in the way of their obeying God.
So, I work on receiving with a smile.

I think it's amazing how little things can totally make someone else's day!

Even just smiling at someone when you're in a busy store and things are hectic can change their mood.

And then there are times when we aren't busy, but we don't think about others we could be helping, with really relatively little effort on our own.

I think making meals for people is one of the most helpful things we can do, and one of the most graciously received. How many times do I make extra just so I could have some to freeze? We can give it away, too.

Thanks for helping me mull over some of these things today...
